Christmas Day in Munich Posted: Thu October 29, 2009 04:32 AM UTC
Hello Everyone, my family and I are traveling to Munich, arriving on Christmas Eve. Can anyone recommend what to do on Christmas day in Munich. Looks like many businesses will be closed and tours are not available. Are there church service that we can attend? Suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks, Alex

End of Ocktoberfest Posted: Thu October 22, 2009 08:33 AM UTC
What is Munich like duing the last two days of Ocktoberfest, and the day or two after?
I'll be doing business in Germany in October. I'm not a beer drinker, nor am I partial to polkas, so I consider Octoberfest to be a bit of an impediment, not an opportunity. Unfortunately the only times that we could fit in a visit to Munich would be a day or two after or a day or two before the end.
Are hotel prices still rediculously high? Are they still crowded? Do visitors vacate the city immediately? Or do they start leaving before the end?
Thanks,
HB

Metro pass Posted: Wed September 16, 2009 09:31 PM UTC
Hello everyone,
There are a lot of questions about train passes here and about which tickets are good for which zone... I figured i'd throw mine in too...
I'm staying at Four points by Sheraton Munchen Olympiapark located at Helene-Mayer-Ring 12. I plan to attend the festivities at Oktoberfest and then also take side trips to Neuschwanstein Castle and also to Dachau.
Would it be cost efficient to get a 2 day pass for zones 1-3, 1-6 or just by point to point tickets?

train longer than platform Posted: Tue September 15, 2009 08:41 PM UTC
years ago sometimes the train coming to rome from outside italy was longer than the platform at the large station in rome. people could pick up their things and move forward until they came to car that was next to the platform and exit. or exit the door of their car and walk on the rocks the length of maybe several cars until they got to the platform.
does this sometimes occur at munich or any place else in germany or europe that you know of.

Driving from Munich to Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenburg - what road to choose? Posted: Wed September 2, 2009 09:16 PM UTC
Hi,
I am going to be driving from the center of Munich to Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I can follow Autobahn 8 and then Autobahn 7 north. The shorter route would be to take Autobahn 8 to Augsburg, and then take Route 2 north and then route 25. I am not sure how much traffic I can expect on the autobahn, and which route would be faster. Any thoughts?

Driving through Munich Posted: Wed September 2, 2009 07:34 PM UTC
Help! We'll be driving from Garmisch on a Thursday morning to the Munich airport (flight leaves at 1150). I'm wondering what time we should leave Garmisch in order to get to the airport on time? I've read about the traffic problems in/around Munich and don't want to be more stressed than necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated...P.S. This is my first visit to a forum, so I hope I know what I'm doing....:>)

1 night at Ocktoberfest - need inexpensive lodging at a decent hotel (doesn't have to be downtown) Posted: Mon August 31, 2009 09:41 PM UTC
This is my first trip to Europe and we are going to be in Munich over Oktoberfest but will only have 1 day and 1 night. Any suggestions on what to do/see? I'd like to check out Oktoberfest for a little while but don't plan to spend the whole day there and would like to see "not to miss" sites. This is a last minute planned trip (obviously) so sorry if my questions have already been asked.
My husband and I are staying in Fuessen Oct 1-3 but have a pretty early flight on the 4th out of Munich. Are there any inexpensive but nice hotels on a transit line so that we could stay closer to the hotel on Saturday night but still get to Munich? We want to go into Munich to see sites on Saturday and check out Oktoberfest but don't necessarily need to stay in the city.
Any suggestions to get drinks and dinner on our last night in Europe?
Also - what is the quickest (and relatively inexpensive) way to get to Munich airport from the city and how long does it take - we have an 11AM flight?

Planned 1-day trip from Munich by car, Day 2: please comment on the itenerary Posted: Wed August 26, 2009 09:38 PM UTC
The goal of this 1-day drive is to visit the Linderhof and Neuschwanstein Castles, and see other things along the way.
1) Start driving South from the center of Munich at 8-9AM (take Autobahn 95 South towards Garmisch)
2) Take the exit west towards Ettal and Linderhof Castle (Route ST2060). Stop by the Ettal Monastery, spend 30-40 min there.
http://maps.google.com/?q=ettal
3) Continue driving west towards Linderhof Castle. Visit Linderhof (1-1.5 hours there).
4) Continue driving west towards Austrian border (towards Plansee Lake and Reutte) on the same road, eventually reaching the German city of Schwangau. Visit the Neuschwanstein Castle where I have a reservation at 16:55 (so have to be at the box office at 15:55 to pick up the ticket)
5) After visiting the castle spend the rest of the evening in downtown Fussen.
6) Drive back to Munich late in the evening.
Ideally, I would like to fit into the schedule the village of Oberammergau, but I don't think I have the time for it.
Would appreciate any comments, suggestions, ideas or advice. Thanks!

Planned 1-day trip from Munich by car, Day 1: please comment on the itenerary Posted: Wed August 26, 2009 09:26 PM UTC
I will be in Munich in the middle of September.
The main goal of this 1-day drive from Munich is to visit the city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and a couple of other interesting places on the way. Unfortunately, I cannot dedicate more than 1 full day to the Romantic road.
1) Picking up a rental car in the center of Munich around 9AM
2) Drive north-west towards Harburg Castle (Schloss Harburg). Visit the castle (approx. 1 hour)]
3) Driving further north, stop for a couple of hours in Dinkelsbühl
4) Continue on to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Spend about 4 hours there.
5) On the way back to Munich in the evening stop in Augsburg and stroll the streets in the city center of the city (maybe stop for a dinner or a cup of coffee at the local bar/caffee/restaurant).
6) Back in Munich
Would appreciate any suggestions, advice, ideas. Thank you!

Driving to Fussen, want to see Neuschwanstein without buying tickets Posted: Sun August 23, 2009 05:29 PM UTC
I will be driving from Munich to Fussen, looking at alpine landscapes and small towns. I plan to reach Fussen in the afternoon. I would like to see the Neuschwanstein castle, but don't plan to buy tickets, since I heard from many people that it's much more interesting from outside.
Any advice on the easiest way to see/approach the castle? What is the best place to look at the castle without paying for the admission tickets?

Airport to the Column at the center of Marienplatz Posted: Fri August 21, 2009 04:01 AM UTC
I need to get from the Airport to the Column at the center of Marienplatz. I'd like to leave one piece of luggage at a left luggage facility on the way. I need to get there as quickly as possible to get on a tour. Would leaving the luggage at the Munich train station be most efficient? Any help will be appreciated.

Train ticket question Posted: Thu August 13, 2009 04:55 AM UTC
I recently, thanks to this forum, purchased three train tickets directly from DB Bahn and had them mailed to me. Of course everything is written in German, but I figured out only my overnight train ticket has a reservation with a wagon and bettplatz number. My other two tickets,Munich to Salzburg, and Berchtesgaden to Munich didn't offer reservations and my tickets just have dates and destinations on them. Are these two good on any trains to those locations that day since there is no reservation? Do I still have to go to a ticket window before boarding for any of these tickets or just self validate them with the machines as I did in Italy? Do I just sit anywhere without a reservation?
Thanks in advance

Also,is haggling over prices the norm in Germany as in some other courtries? Is tipping a rule there as well? Taxi's? Restaurants? How much is acceptable?

Dachau Posted: Fri August 7, 2009 11:35 PM UTC
I was looking to take a tour of Dachau from Munich, but the operators tour is 5 hrs. and I don't have the time before my train leaves. I see that trains leave the main station in Munich frequently and it only takes 20 minutes to get there. Once there, can anybody get in without being on a tour? Is the camp far from the train station? Are tours available once there?
Thanks in advance
