Hi all,

I'm looking for advice on getting a good deal on a quality (but not fancy) 4x4, which we will drive ourselves. We have already spent time in the areas of Ethiopia to which we will be traveling, but have not driven ourselves to these places. We're not sure about any special driver's license we might need or any other concerns we should consider. We really need to keep our costs down, so we are looking for a good car at a good price.

We plan to hire a 4x4 to drive from Gonder to Lalibela.

We were told that a new road has opened so would take 4-6 hours.

When we tried to book this, we were told 12-14 hours, and that it may be impassible in July.

Can anyone confirm which is correct?

The last night of a five week trip (May-June) to Malawi and Tanzania will be a stopover in Addis courtesy of Ethiopian Airlines. Rachel and I are due in at 8:15pm and will depart next day at midday for London. EA say they will put us up in a hotel and I'm wondering if anyone knows the hotel/s they use, and anything about them, where they may be etc. Its obviously a short time in a big (new) place but any thoughts on what it's possible to do, see, eat (vegetarian) would be very welcome.

I came bach from Ethiopia a few days ago and bought the wrong CD at the airport.
How can I get the actual (Millenium?) CD of Teddy Afro aka Tewodros Kassahun with the song Abebayehosh on it? Tries various internet shops but no success.
Your help will be greatly appreciated as I heard this music everywhere in Ethiopia and really want it as a souvenir.

I plan on going to Ethiopia later this year and I have a question about the visa process. I don't want to have a planned trip and sort of just want to go with the flow. There's a few places I have in mind but I don't want to book hotels and have a rigid travel plan. I read that in order to obtain a visa you have to state how long you're going to be there and where you're staying. Is there anyway around this?? Thank you people!

I will have 6 days free in Ethiopia next year in Feb. I know it is short but I have no choice.

With such a short time, what would you advice me to visit ? Should I stay around Addis or it is very much possible to move by local transport without loosing too much time ?

Does anyone know if I can get any discount for domestic flights if I fly to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines? I talked to the lady at Ethiopian Airlines office here in Bangkok and she said I could get some discount if I buy those tickets once I get into Addis Ababa but not if I buy them here in Bangkok. It sounds weird.

How easy is it to get to Jinka from Addis by road?

I am going to a conference in Addis for 1 week. I have 3 days of time to my own, and have no contacts in Addis. Could anyone fill me in on what sites to see in Addis ( i would also like to hit a market), or reliable safe visitor tour guides of the city, or any safety tips? I am a young female and will be traveling alone.

Does anyone have any recommendation for inexpensive places to stay in Addis? I know about the major hotels, but I'm on a budget and am looking for something cheaper. Has anyone heard of the Z Guest House?

Our plan is to fly all the way to Gondor fron Jinka on a Wednesday in November. Likely we will arrive in Gondor in the afternoon. Please tell me if this is possible and how it can work.

Thursday- we want to visit Gondor churches castles and then depart to Simien mountains by taxi and begin trek and camp in mountains.

Friday-hike in Simian mountains and camp in mountains.

Saturday return to Gondor and fly to Addis Abbaba.

Any info would be appreciated.

i know i'm a fool that has left the booking of a hotel far far too late - would anyone know of a hotel for the dates 10/09/07 to 15/09/07 or of alternative accommodation ..... i'm pretty easy with where i stay but as long as it is girl friendly ..... regards m innes

I am thinking of going to Ethiopia sometime this September. I heard that there is a Bi-millenium celebration there soon. Will I have difficult time finding a hotel? What´s the atmosphere there like? Is it a big celebration?

I know a visa can be bought on arrival at Bole airport, but I also know some foreign embassies require proof of a return ticket to issue a visa. Is it ok to fly in on a one-way ticket? Ill be leaving over-land.
