Cairo Is it safe to travel to Cairo/Egypt now?
Posted: Fri October 30, 2009 11:42 AM UTC
Hi, my husband and 2 children are planning a holiday to egypt mid dec - end of jan. We are quite excited about travelling to Egypt but have heard a heap of things that have caused some concern. Can anybody please shed some light on a possible Typhoid outbreak in cairo due to rubbish build up in cairo since the pigs were slaughtered and the foul smells in cairo etc due to rubbish on streets not being collected. Is it true that at the moment the streets are full of rubbish which is causing health issues and viruses, also is Swine flu bad at he moment? As Egypt is heading into winter is it expected to be concern, expecially in dec/jan. We are hearing hear that swine flu is a big worry in egypt. PLEASE advise if this is all media beatup or real? my many thanks in advance, you would be helping in a big way if you can offer more information.

Cairo To Book Before We Go or Not.
Posted: Fri October 30, 2009 04:43 AM UTC
Dear All,

We are trying to decide whether to book day tours before we get to Egypt or whether to wait till we get there. I'm inclined to wing it and just wait and see. And figure it out when we get there. But have heard mixed reviews on getting tours from the hotels so what are your savvy reccomendations?

Thanks, Candell

Does the metro go to the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar? Or what tourist sites, if any, would it be useful to use the metro for transportation?

Cairo To take a guide or wander independently
Posted: Fri October 16, 2009 01:53 AM UTC
My husband and I plan on spending 3-4 weeks in Egypt and Jordan. We are debating a semi-preplanned organized deluxe trip or just booking hotels, flights, and transportation and the rest as we go. I am an artist and would like private time at the sites. What part of Cairo would be best to just wander without a guide, or is this not a good idea.

Cairo Three questions
Posted: Mon October 5, 2009 06:52 AM UTC
We lived in Cairo from 2000-2006. I returned for 10 days in 2007 but saw nothing as I was ill. Now we are going to the wedding of an Egyptian friend next week.
1. What sort of gift would be expected?
2. Has Cairo changed much- apart from becoming more expensive?
3. Is anyone else going to be around from 16th-20th October,

Cairo Weather in December
Posted: Mon September 21, 2009 12:29 AM UTC
Can somebody tell me what kind of weather it will be in mid Dec. Will it be too cold (mean less than 15-20 degree Centigrade) as I have small kids with me who are not exposed to low temp.

Is Mid Dec. a peak season for Cairo (for tourists)

Further are there good serviced apartments (with kitchen, utensils etc.) for a short stay of 4-5 days. Kindly provide me contact details of the same. In what budget range will these be available during Dec.

Any guidance highlighy appreciated.

Thanks and Regards
Purush

Cairo Trip planning to Egypt
Posted: Wed September 2, 2009 04:06 PM UTC
My wife and I, both retired, are planning 8-10days trip to Egypt, hoping to see the maximum sights. Is it advisable to go for a package tour with a local tour operator or do it independently, once we arrive in Cairo?
All suggestions are welcomed.

Cairo Tour to Pyramids of Giza
Posted: Mon August 31, 2009 02:10 PM UTC
Hi there, Just wondering would anybody have an idea roughly how much it would cost to get a guide to take us from our hotel in Cairo via taxi to the pyramids of Giza, show us around and preferably bring us back to Cairo to the Egyptian Museum? We would like to visit the pyramids in the morning time and the museum in the afternoon/evening. Also, does anybody know is it possible to pre-book tickets to go inside the pyramids through the hotel we'd be staying in,or are the tickets for inside the pyramids strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis on the morning at the pyramids?
Thank you, Geri

Cairo Travel Insurance
Posted: Sun August 30, 2009 02:52 AM UTC
Since I am a 100% Nubie about traveling abroad, I'am looking for any and all advice! I found insuremytrip.com--great site--but sooooo many options. Is it better to select both travel and medical - even though the airlines offers trip/cx ins? Should I base it on "worse case senario?" The medical portion has sooo many options - and the prices are all over the place. Does anyone have any experience w/this?? (but if they do that means something happened ugh!! sorry)
Thanks,
Pat

Cairo 24 hours only - please help me plan.
Posted: Thu August 13, 2009 10:08 PM UTC
I will be arriving in Cairo on Friday 9/11 at 7pm, spending the night in a hotel, and sightseeing the next day (saturaday)until I am due back at the airport at 7pm for a 10pm flight. Though I know it is not nearly enough time to spend, I would very much like to (at least) see the pyramids and Khan el-Khalili. A carpet factory would be an added bonus but I'm guessing that would be too much to try to cram in.

Due to time constraints, I plan to hire a private driver. Can anyone please tell me what area/hotel to stay in so as to minimize time spent in traffic - nothing fancy is necessary but clean and safe with internet access and some english speaking staff would be great. I'm guessing that traffic will be least intense during the evening so I would be better off staying closer to the pyramids and then traveling working my way back through the city-center and Khan el Khalili on my way back to the airport. Is this true?

Also, while I am going to do my very best to fight jet-lag, 7pm in Cairo is 9am where I live so are there any suggestions about what to do if, upon arrival, I simply am not ready to sleep? Nothing too exciting as I do want to be fully present the next day.

Also (am I pushing my luck asking so many questions here?)I will only have carry-on bags. How long should I give myself to get through customs and out of the airport upon arrival?

Finally, my final destination is a refugee camp in Africa so I simply cannot bring much with me but I really want to purchase goods at Khan el-Khalili. Will the merchants ship for me? If not, what are other options?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate it!
