I've searched everywhere on this site for even a mention of the Konzentrationlager Melk and nothing appears. I'd like to visit the site of my grandfather's death and my father's KZ camp. Can anyone provide with information on how to get to the location of the former KZ Melk.
Thanks

My family and I were Hungarian refugees in Austria in 1956-1957. About the first 3 months we lived in a beautiful small hotel a villa that served as a sanitarium part of the year in Baden bei Wien. I was only 10 years old at the time. However, I still remember the beautiful setting. To get there our auto had to drive a serpentine road. We were treated royally during our entire stay. I remember the wrought iron fence by the entrence. I am trying to plan a return visit possibly this summer. Would anyone have the name of the place with possible photographs?
Much thanks in advance

Hi,
I'm from Australia, and I will be travelling to Vienna solo for one week in early Dec (2-8 Dec). I am considering whether to go ski in Semmering since it is one of the few ski resorts close to Vienna. I would like to know when the ski season starts there in Semmering, and whether it will be too crowded in early December? Also, are there many hostels or alternative sorts of accomodation (cheaper accomodation) apart from Grandhotel Panhans, if so how far are they from the ski mountain? Does anyone know where (a website) I can check up for prices of ski hire and ski passes there?
Since I am travelling solo, I'd like to know as much information as possible for peace of mind.
hey everyone,
i am going to be in Wiener Neustadt from late August till December with a college exchange program from Dublin Ireland.
i am a keen snow boarder/ skier,
and was wondering when is the earliest this area of Austria gets snow? also area the closest ski mountains in semmering, stuhleck and hirschenkogel?
which of these would be the best area?
any information on these areas including wiener neustadt would be great as i know very little and am finding it hard to gather info.
thanks very much and i hope to hear soom replies
I am putting together an itinerary for travel in Austria for May 2007. I need help in arranging boat travel between Melk, Durnstein and Vienna on May 19th, 20th and 21st. The group arives in Melk around noon on the 19th. We are hoping that's enough time to tour the Abbey and then catch a boat/ferry to Durnstein on the 20th...returning to Vienna on the 21st. Is there a web site for water transport between these destinations? (I did find a cruise for Sunday the 21st to Vienna, but no timetables.) Is there a timetable out there somewhere, and an ability to book with someone for these three destinations in advance? Thanks.
I just visited Melk Abbey and was completely overwhelmed by the beauty of the 2 spiral staircases there. Does anyone know the web-links to a detail history of these two staircases. I just could not find anything after exhaustive search via Google.
Does the Vienna to Budapest hydrofoil stop in Hainburg?
Is there a bus or train to Vienna? to Bratislava and Budapest?
I notice that there are no resevations available on Sunday, July 2, from Budapest to Bratislava. Does Budapest attract a large number of weekend tourists?
I am staying in Weiner Neustadt for two days in mid-May 2006 and need some suggestions. Are there any good nature walks or inexpensive restaurants that are worth a try? Are there any big evernts/festivals in May?
We will be visiting in Amstetten for 3 days in late March, staying at the Hotel Exel and spending time with our son, who lives there and teaches at the Bundesgymnasium in Amstetten and at the Melk Abbey school. We plan to visit the Abbey and take some side trips, possibly to Salszburg or Linz. Does anyone have any other suggestions for things to do or see there during that time of the year?
I would like to have a day trip to Melk from Vienna. May I know how to go there and how far away from Vienna? Or any other suburban which is attractive to go like Hallstatt in Salzburg?? Kindly advise. Thanks.
My son and daughter-in-law will be in Vienna Dec. 21-30. They want to take a day trip to a beautiful mountainous/ski resort area that is not too far from Vienna. From what I can find out, it seems that Semmering/Hirschenkogel would be a good place for them to spend a day. Questions: Will the train ride from Vienna to Semmering have beautiful scenery? Is the train station right in the middle of the town? Are there taxis in town? There will be lots of snow there, won't there? How far is the cable car to Hirschenkogel from the train station? Can you ride the cable car up and back down just to look around, or is it just for people who are actually skiing? Is there a restaurant on top? Tell me about the main town of Semmering---is it small enough to walk around to shops and restaurants without freezing to death? How long a walk is it to the Grand Hotel Pannhaus from the train station? I have also read about a ski area called Stulech that I thought was at Semmering---if not, where is it?? Any information you could give me about a nice day trip to Semmering would be a wonderful help----I will pass it along to my son---I'm his "travel researcher." Looking forward to hearing from someone. Thanks so much, Sharon Jiles
Cheap hotels Posted: Wed October 27, 2004 11:03 PM UTC
Hello, I am going to St. Polten next weekend. Does anyone know cheap hotels in this town? I know it's only 40km away from Vienna, but I must stay in this town next Friday.
Travelling from Linz to Vienna by rail, I thought I might like to stop-off in Melk for about 4 hours to see the old town and abbey. Is it within walking distance? Is it a recommended stop? Is 4 hours about right? Thanks
