I'm just starting to put together an itinerary for a spring photography/train trip through Austria. Hallstatt popped up on my radar when I saw a beautiful photograph of a quaint little town on a lake in the mountains (I'm sure you've seen the one I mean in National Geographic Traveler). Limited on time, is Hallstatt visitable in one afternoon, or to truly enjoy the place should I plan to arrive in one morning, and leave the next? Are there any other photo-worthy spots in this town, or nearby which can be accessed by train or easily by foot? I'm planning to go in early May 2010, so will there be greenery at this time or still barren due to cold? Thank you!
I will spend a weekend in Linz and coming with a car.
Is there anywhere a place near or in the city centre
where I can park for free from friday to sunday?
Or maybe park a little outside of the city and have a
short walk to the centre.
I am going to cruise the Danube this summer and wish to visit Hallstatt instead of one of the designated tour stops. It is my understanding that Linz is the closest point to finding a train that will arrive at a ferry which will take me onto Hallstatt. Has anyone done this before? If the choice could be made between Linz and Hallstatt; which would you choose? Can anyone tell me if Linz is closer to Hallstatt than Melk or Salzburg? Approximately how long it would take to get from Linz to Hallstatt and back to catch the cruise boat?
Hi, does anyone know what is the pricing of a main course in Rudolfsturm? I'm wondering if it's cheaper to eat there or in Hallstatt. Alternatively, is there any good affordable restaurants to recommend near Hallstatt Lahn?
Is there rail or bus to and from Linz to Mauthausen,June 26, 2009? We will be on river cruise and have from 9 am to 11 pm
If so, how do we arrange transportation in advance?

We have relatives from India arriving end August, staying for a short time with us. (they love awesome sceneries and views of the Alps in particular but could not get a swiss visa unfortunately , only EU). We live in Mannheim and are planning to visit Salzburg for 3 nights end of August and 3 nights in Vienna.
Our plan currently is
Day 1: Arrive in Munich by train - spend an hour on a bus tour so my relatives get to see a bit of Marienplatz and Konigplatz - on to Chiemsee - and sleep the night in Salzburg.
Day 2: Use the Bayern ticket (which we will buy in advance) and visit Konigsee and Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden. Spend the rest of the day at Salzburg.
Day 3: Visit either Garmisch Paten Kirchen OR Achensee by train and spend the day there.
Day 4: Take the bus ride to Wolfgangsee (Mt Schafberg) and Hallstatt from Salzburg.
Day 5: Take the evening train to Vienna and stay there until Day 8 morning when we have a return flight to Frankfurt (near Mannheim)
I am unsure about the following:
a) Can we use the Einfach Raus ticket on the cog train in Mt Schafberg...?
b) If I were to decide between Garmisch and Achensee which one should I?
c) Can the Eagles Nest be dropped from the itenary..
d) Are there other places (Werfen, GrossGlockner, etc) that we should not miss out, which are accessible from Salzburg..and would be recommended in place of the existing itenary
Thanks a ton... and I find this site very helpful ! thanks to all the members.
My husband has just got himself a Honer Melodian - or is it an Accordian?? Can anyone please recommend somewhere where these instruments are played whilst we can have a decent meal. - I'd just prefer a nice meal without the accordian, but it would be nice to have both if possible!
A GROUP OF ENGLISHMEN WILL BE IN LINZ FRO 5 DAYS FROM 8TH JUNE, WE WILL BE ENJOYING LOCAL HOSPITALITY AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW OF ANY BARS THAT WILL BE SERVING REASONABLY PRICED FOOD IN THE EVENINGS FOR A GROUP OF 16 VERY WELL BEHAVED FOOTBALL FANS. HOW MUCH IS THE BEER IN LINZ, AND CAN I BUY A GUINNESS.
THANKYOU
We are going to visit Hallstatt (will stay in Obertraun) starting from 30.04 till 07.05.
I wonder what is the weather like in this period in this region. Check with webcam, seems it is rather cold there, the trees are still bald. ;( Can I expect a bit more green colors in a week?
What is the best way to get from Linz Blue Danube Airport to Vienna by train? I found the schedule for the airport bus, leaving from a stop outside departure hall, going to Linz busterminal. Is this stop - Kärntnerstrasse - the one for the train station in Linz? Or is it better to go to Hörsching train station instead and take a train to Linz and Vienna from there?
Thank you for any information.
Robert
I am traveling from Salzburg to Vienna in mid-June 2008 and wanted to stop at Mauthausen Concentration Camp; however, I will have my luggage with me. Are there lockers at the train station in Linz?
how much does train ticket cost from Salzburg to Hallstatt?

we will be driving through salzburg's lake district. i learned that parking is a problem in the villages. i would like to know if anyone can recommend me where to park at each of the villages around the lake district, such as hallstatt, satzkammergut, bad ischl, hallein, etc.
My name is Jeremy and I'll be taking a road trip at the end of April from Italy to Austria.
I'll stay there for 3 days 4 nights and I was planning to stay in Salzburg for 3 nights and Hallstatt for 1 day - 1 night.
There are 3 sights that I would really like to see but I'm not sure if I'm trying to pack too much into one day (the Salzbergwerk mine, the charnel house, and the dachstein ice caves). Does anyone know if it makes sense to do all this in one day?
Also, I have seen in guidebooks that these sights open in May. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could find out if they would be open on April 30th.
How far is it to Hallstatt from Innsbruck? We are staying in Innsbruck and would like to take a day trip to Hallstatt by train. Any info on which train to take would be greatly appreciated.

I will be visiting the concentration camp in Mauthausen, Austria on my way to Melk. I will need a place to store my backpack while I visit the camp. Does the Mauthausen train station have lockers? If not, does anyone know of a place near the train station that I may store my luggage for a few hours while I hike to the camp and back? Please let me know as soon as possible. I leave for my trip in 8 days!
