Vienna SIM cards in Vienna
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 10:47 PM UTC
Hi,
We are travelling to Vienna-Salzburg-Prague-Paris. Could anyone please tell me where to buy SIM cards to our cell phones (I've already checked they will work in Austria)? We want to be able to use them in Paris as well. Is roaming in Europe as expensive as in North America?
I checked the name of the providers (A1, T-mobile, tele.ring, rtc.), but would like to know where to find them in order not to waste my time in Vienna for such stupid things as searching for them...

Vienna Biking in Wachau
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 06:03 PM UTC
I'm thinking of biking in Wachau - does it matter which way I start? Melk - Krems or vice versa? I think it is about 20 km? I'm not a serious biker - just looking to spend a day doing some outdoor activities and sightseeing at the same time. What are some good places to stop in between?
thanks

Vienna Japanese food in Vienna?
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 05:14 PM UTC
Can anyone give recommendations and/or warnings concerning Japanese food and restaurants in Vienna?
Travelling solo every now and then I have this strange habit of checking the Japanese food selection - in addition to the local specialities, of course.

FYI: This far the worst experience has been in Finland and the most recent positive one was in Morocco....

Vienna Accommodation Outside Central Vienna
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 10:25 PM UTC
Hi. I wonder if anyone could recommend any reasonable hotels (or apartments) on the outskirts of Vienna or even in a town close to Vienna.

We'll be travelling to Vienna by car, and do not wish to take it into central Vienna. Ideally we are looking for a hotel that is about 20 - 30 minutes from central Vienna.

I'm probably asking for too much, but it would be good if the hotel/apartment was in walking distance (10 minutes or so) of a metro stop or station and in a safe area.

Many thanks

Vienna Pickled Capers
Posted: Wed April 30, 2008 07:49 PM UTC
A strange question I know, but one I need answered.

What, if any, restrictions are there in bringing preserved goods into Vienna.

A friend is in need of home-pickled Capers whose taste cannot be matched by commercial items.

Will Customs stop their importation or would they be let in under certain circumstances?

Vienna Pay As I Go or No?
Posted: Tue April 29, 2008 07:02 PM UTC
I'm taking a 25 day trip through eastern Europe in June. I'm flying into Vienna, from there doing the following:

Vienna-Prague-Krakow-Eger-Budapest-Ljubljana-Bled-Zagreb-Split-Korcula-Dubrovnik, then I'm flying back to France from there.

I was originally planning on buying train tickets as I went, but after reading a lot of the posts here, I got a little nervous about it. Is it doable? Do trains get booked a lot? Or should I put some work into booking tix now? Thanks all!

Vienna Apartments in Vienna
Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 03:18 PM UTC
Hello
Need some help in deciding which apartment to rent:

1. Schweizertalstrass 5, 1130

2. Rossauer Lande, cross street is Gruenentorgasse District 9

3. Arnsteingasse 25 District 15

I think all 3 are close to public transportation so getting around is not a problem right? Would like a location close to restaurants, bakeries, supermarket and coffee house so we don't have to go far after a day of sightseeing.

Thanks for any tips/advice.

Vienna Rainy holidays in Vienna
Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 12:38 PM UTC
To my disappointment, I read the weather forecast for the 5 days we'll be spending in Vienna: Showers, drizzle, clouds. :(
That changes a lot of our plans -and our son's who wanted to spend all 5 days in the Prater!! :(:(
Just wanted to know:

-Is the zoo (and Prater)totally out of the question when it rains?
-Is nachmarkt (sp?) an open market?
-Any alternatives for kid's activities indoors? (except from museums!)

(Somebody suggested the marionette theatre but i'm not sure we'll find seats because it's very popular).

Thanks

Vienna Transport: Strasbourg - Vienna - Budapest - Prague - Berlin
Posted: Mon April 21, 2008 11:00 PM UTC
Hello all, I will be traveling in some countries of Central and I want your help to know if you can write me some options to travel between Strasbourg - Vienna - Budapest - Prague - Berlin. Is it possible to do everything by train? Or by bus? Is there any kind of "pass" that I can buy for all the trips? Does it have buses between these cities everyday?
My plan is:

Strasbourg 4 days
Viene 5 days
Budapeste 4 days
Prague 3 days

in the 5th day travel between Strasbourg - Vienna
in the 10th day travel between Vienna - Budapeste
in the 14th day travel between Budapeste and Prague
in the 17th day travel between Prague and Berlin

I do not like to travel during the night or arrive late night in the cities, but if necessary it would be ok.
Thanks a lot!

Vienna Tickets to Vienna Staatsoper
Posted: Sun April 20, 2008 05:43 PM UTC
Hello, fellow VT-ers! Me again. I heard that Vienna Staatsoper has two kinds of tickets available - regular seats and standing ones. Having checked their website, I take it the ones that sell at over 185 euros are the first type and the 25 euros ones must the those standing tickets.
I'm considering getting a standing ticket but there's no indication on the opera hall plan as to where exactly you're allowed to stand. Has anyone done it and if yes, how does it work - do you get the best place if you show up earlier than others? Is it actually possible to watch the whole performance standing? I might actually splash out on the expensive tickets since the prospect of standing for over 2 hours is rather daunting but I just wanted to check with you before I decide.
Thanks!

Vienna Seats on the Vienna Prague night train
Posted: Sat April 19, 2008 12:58 PM UTC
Hi! I am planning to take the night train from Vienna to Prague on 2nd June. I will have the Eastern Europe railpass and wanted to keep my costs as low as possible. The information that i have found (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/euraide/tc0202vi.htm) mentions that i will need to spend 30 euros per person on a bed in the triple sleeper. Would anyone knows if seats/couchettes are available at a lower price on this train?

Thanks!

Vienna Vienna to Prerov

I want to take the train from Vienna to Prerov (and then bus to Olomouc) when I'm in Europe this summer, but I would like to know how much it is. I've checked the Austrian and the Czech train websites, but they don't list the price. Does anyone have any idea how much it is?

Vienna Vienna - Prague (yet another question). Ticket price
Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 08:58 PM UTC
I know there has been a lot topics but I cannot quite find the info I'm looking for which is how much does the ticket cost?

Someone has wrote that it pays to buy ticket Vienna - Brecalv (13 euro) and buy the ticket for the rest of the journey from the conductor. It was said this way is going to be cheaper (as long as it's not an supercity train)? Can anyone confirm this? And perhaps tell me how much normal one costs? I tried austrian railway website and although I found lots of trains the price do not show up online for some reason (says only ticket by mail).

cheers

Vienna Day trip from Vienna - Wachau and Danube Valley
Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 05:34 PM UTC
Hi there,

We are going to Vienna soon (19-23 April) and wanted to see that part of Austria as well (that's to say Wachau). I'm trying to take in how I'm going to do it. Train/boat is the option for us. I can see there are boat trips from Krems to Melk. There are even maps of all the interesting places those boats pass on its way. However, I'm curious how we actually can get to visit them as it looks that those boats are not hoo on/off service like tour buses.

The plan is to take train to Melk, visit the Stift Melk and catch a boat there down to Krems. We get off in Krems, wonder the streets for a while and head back to Vienna. Now, the question is how I could actually visit all those places between Melk and Krems? Is there any kind of boat (like a ferry) that do several services a day so that I can get off in one place and catch the next boat.

thanks

Vienna how do we know which train needs a reservation?
Posted: Fri April 11, 2008 09:09 AM UTC
Hello,

My friend and I plan to take a trip to Austria next week. We will stay in Vienna, Hallstatt,
Salzburg and Innbruck. I have printed out train schedule for each trip between the cites.
Using eurail pass, I wonder if we need to make reservation or just hop on.
I read the pass travel guide but still wonder how we know which train needs reservation.
Is there any indication in the timetable? Or we just go to ask at the ticket office?

Thank you very much!

Vienna Antique shopping in Vienna - advice please
Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 08:57 AM UTC
Good Morning,

I'm coming to Vienna later this month and I'd like to check out some of Vienna's antique shops or markets. Can anybody provide me with advice of where to go and if there are any 'must-see' markets.

I'm not particularly interested in large pieces or in furniture. I am more interested in unusual items and smaller objects. Brick-a-brack stores would be most welcome, as would 'junk' shops, but not those selling 1980s cast-offs. I really like genuine antique oddities.

Thank-you, hope to hear from you soon.
