Crossing the border between the DRC and Zambia Posted: Fri May 15, 2009 05:34 PM UTC
Hello! I am wondering if anyone has any advice or info for a tourist crossing from the DRC into Zambia. Is it feasible? Should we expect difficulties? Also, is it possible to travel by bus from Lubumbashi to Victoria Falls? Many thanks!

Volunteering in Kinshasa for 6 weeks. Any tips/advice??? Posted: Sun October 19, 2008 12:32 AM UTC
Hi everyone! This is my first post on LP so please bear with me for my ignorance about certain topics and such...
Anyway, I'm going to be volunteering in Kinshasa through a non-profit NGO for 6 weeks and will most likely be residing in Gombe district near the INRB/school of public health. My mentor (who will be accompanying me for 2 weeks to help me get settled) has put me in touch with an expat something to the tune of $1500/month and from what I've read that should be expected so I'm not unhappy, just disappointed since everything is really adding up.
Are there cheap places to eat in/around Gombe?? I'm a volunteer and will basically be funding this whole trip by myself so other than the occasional splurge, I'm not really looking to spend a lot of money. I've read that the groceries are expensive, but since I am of Indian heritage, I will have no problem eating other types of ethnic food.
My main question (and sorry for this long post) is what tips you all have for my stay? Whether its simply items to bring or places to eat, I will gladly accept anyone's advice as mine is limited to any and info I can find online. For instance, I don't know whether I should bring 6 weeks worth of soap and shampoo if I can find it there for cheap, although it would seem beneficial to bring 6 weeks worth of cereal since the prices for western groceries seem to be exorbitant. Again, any and all advice is appreciated and hopefully, I could even meet up with you as I should be having a fair amount of free time. Thank you in advance, and I look forward to your responses.

visiting pygmies from kinshasa Posted: Sun April 13, 2008 06:30 PM UTC
Can anyone tell me the logistics of visiting a pygmy village from Kinshasa?
It seems that some villages can be visited by a cruise on the congo river?
If so what is the duration and level of comfort of this cruise?

Ruwenzori - Mountains of the Moon. Posted: Sun September 10, 2006 06:26 PM UTC
Is it possible to hire a guide and go climbing Mount Margaritha from Goma. How far away and is it possible to hire a truck or go by bus. I have previously climber Kilimanjaro and now like to climb Ruwenzori. Are there any difficulties when crossing the border to Uganda or shall one stay in Congo?

From Kinshasa to Kisangani Posted: Mon July 31, 2006 12:48 AM UTC
Hi guys,
I am wondering if there is someone who could be so kind to give me some
information about the means of transportation between Kinshasa and Kisangani?
I am thinking of something other than planes.
The river Congo connects the two cities. Is it possible to get a lift on
a cargo o passenger steamer and what is the estimated duration for
the roughly 1200km?
Is there any road alternative such as public busses or cargo trucks?
many thanks

Kinshasa issues Posted: Fri May 26, 2006 06:53 AM UTC
Hi, guys, I plan to work in Kinshasa, I wonder how much it cost to live in Kinshasa for each months.
1.How much everything costed. Accommodation, food, transportion, and other issues about live a life there.
2.How about the secruity issues there? I was told that there are no laws there. In fact , there are lows there, but no one follows it.
Instead protecting the people there, the troops always blackmail the people there. Is it a big problem for businessmen there?
3. I was told that the only way for communicate with others there are cellphone. So , how much a cellphone in Kinshasa? What kind of brand is popular in Kinshasa?
Anyone live in Kinshasa now could connect with me!

Safety in Kinshasa Posted: Thu February 16, 2006 11:22 PM UTC
Please, if you live in DRC or have been there recently, could you tell me if Kinshasa is safe for a foreigner, 30 something solo woman, living and working there? I'm seriously considering a job move to DRC, but I just want to know if all the warnings I heard from friends (who had never been there, by the way) are well-founded.
Thanks,

Job in Lubumbashi Posted: Sat February 19, 2005 11:20 AM UTC
I have been asked to head a project for cobalt processing plant in Katanga. I would be expected to operate out of Lubumbashi. I am 30, married and have a 2 year old daughter.
Request if you could provide some information on life in Lubumbashi, write-ups or pictures or site reference to help me make up my mind.
How is the security situation in and around the town? The money and benefits are good but is it worth taking the risk of operating in this part of Congo?
Though I have heard that situation is fast improving and the country is trying to rebuild itself.

I have a offer to head a project in Katanga for setting up a cobalt processing plant. I am 30, married with a 2 year old daughter. The money and benefits are good. But is it worth the risk?
Would like to speak to someone who has lived / is living there presently.
Need to know about the life in Lubumbashi and Kolwezi. Pictures, write-ups or site reference would help me decide.
Need some inputs.
