I am visiting Birmingham and have plans to go to Stonehenge. Can someone please tell me the easiest way to get there from Birmingham (not by car)

planning a short trip

This Spring my wife and I will be in England for a conference. We're planning to rent a car, but we only have about three days. We are hoping to visit Stonehenge, Avebury and Glastonbury and would like suggestions about other sites in the vicinity. I'd like to find out which barrow(s) would be the best to visit. We are also interested in medieval sites, particularly any interesting church frescoes or sculpture.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
