Cornwall Cornish Cottages - unadvertised or late cancellations (online)
Posted: Wed May 21, 2008 01:39 PM UTC
HI, this is really for those in live in beautiful county of Cornwall, or who own a holiday home there.

Clearly trying to book for Aug 9 at this late stage is difficult. All online cottages seem booked.

Are there any cottages recommended by word of mouth which may be available?

Or, does anyone know of a place where cancellations are posted (online)? We don't mind where we go in Cornwall (it's all beautiful!).

I shall continue to check those cottages which we like in case one becomes available. But it does seem odd that I can't find a place where cancellations are automatically notified by email!

Any thoughts?

Kind regards - Paul

Cornwall Where to stay in Cornwall/Newquay
Posted: Wed February 27, 2008 12:57 PM UTC
Hi there,
My partner and our two children (8 and 2) are planning on spending a week or two in either Cornwall or Newquay this Summer.

We would ideally like to stay in a log cabin/static mobile home on a lively site that has lots of entertainment/activities for the children both in the day and evening, swimming pool, park and would REALLY appreciate your help.

Many thanks in advance.

Cornwall Are there any Germans in Cornwall
Posted: Mon January 21, 2008 04:53 PM UTC
Hello everybody,

I'm a German female and have been living in London for almost 11 years.
But the big City life is starting to irritate me now.....
Also my question is...are there any Germans in Cornwall, I think it's always nice to have some friends from your own country.
I'm thinking about moving to Cornwall and are happy about any advice given.:-)

Penzance From Heathrow to Penzance
Posted: Sun December 30, 2007 11:58 AM UTC
Hi there! We are 2 couples in our 50s and 60s and we shall be visiting England for at least a month. We would like to take a train/bus whichever is cheaper to Penzance where we intend to book a car just to travel the Cornwall area. From there, we intend to take a train to the Cotswolds and to pick up another car. We may want to go to Pembrook too. How do I book a train or coach from Heathrow. is it better to prebook it or to buy a british rail pass? Any help is valuable. thank you

Cornwall Weather in April

Am planning to spend 2 weeks in Cornwall, probably based in the Truro area, in mid April. What weather can I expect and is this a reasonably quiet time for visiting? I come from a warm climate so am hoping it won't be too cold!

Posted: Mon September 17, 2007 04:16 PM UTC
Hi ,

VT member Rex Vaughan and his wife Sacra will be visiting Newquay, Cornwall around 1st October. We have agreed on a get together at the St Kew Inn, St Kew Highway, between Wadebridge and Camelford, on the Monday evening 1st October.

Are there any other VTers in the area at that time, who would like to join our small gathering? The more the merrier. Just reply here, as I won't be placing this on the Meetings page.

Cornwall Abandoned Cruise Liner - Where Is It???
Posted: Fri June 29, 2007 11:42 AM UTC
Hello everybody

I am visiting Cornwall in August and we want to go on a couple of boat trips. When I came to Cornwall serveral years ago I remember catching a boat to take us to a very beautiful little town but cant remember the name.

On the way we went passed an old abandoned Cruise Liner/Ship that had been left there as it was too expensive to ship it too Poland I think for scrapping. It was quiet a sight as you came round the river bend to suddenly have this huge ship infront of you.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT OR DID I IMAGINE IT???

I just want to know the route to take to try and see it again with our kids.

Cheers

Cornwall Fall visit to Cornwall
Posted: Wed June 13, 2007 06:14 PM UTC
My wife and I are thinking of spending 4-6 weeks in Cornwall this fall.

- We'd like a self-catering place. Our requirements are low, since we plan to use it just for a base. We'll be out every day. I will need a good internet connection, though. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

- While we've seen lots of Fowey (my wife's ancestral home), we want to explore the rest of the county (and maybe Devon, too). Having looked at the bus & train schedules, I guess a car is necessary?

- It might be nice to be near Newquay, so we might find a way to grab some of those incredibly cheap RyanAir seats to somewhere we haven't been.

- I'm an avid footie fan (we get almost all EPL games on TV). I want to get to at least 4 or 5 games while we're there. I see there are trains to London & Birmingham, but it looks like we really need a car for this, too.

Any one know any good quiet sites to base a new static holiday home, by quiet I mean farm sites or small friendly holiday parks in the North Cornwall area from south of Bude to north of Newquay including Bodmin Moor.
This site will be required for the summer of 2007 onwards
We are very familiar with the area
Any information will be gratefully received.

Cornwall Thanks and what do you suggest???
Posted: Wed September 27, 2006 10:17 PM UTC
Lively Forum!!! Thanks for all your input. Day trip to Tintagel is nixed. I was wondering why I couldn't find any trains I suppose I missed the 1961 site <g>. If I have to travel 4 hrs I'm not going back!

My mother, sister, daughter and myself are going to spend 3 weeks in June in the UK and Ireland and we have a lot of ground to cover. We don't want to be changing rooms every night but if we can spend 1 to 3 nights we might survive. We are having a major planning weekend in 3 weeks and I am trying to get a very loose itinerary together.

Our interests run towards ruins <g>, neolithic sites, caves, ghosts and macabre-ish, and of course we want to see castles but need to keep it to the 'must see' ones. Prefer quaint small villages over large cities.

So... what do you suggest as a good central location for exploring the area. (Close to trains - we want to drive as little as possible) We would be leaving London, stopping at Stonehenge. It seems like it would be better to hit Cornwall first then go to on Bath. (Correct me if I'm wrong) and what are the 'must sees' in Cornwall?

Thanks!~Deb

Cornwall Can you help me choose between two excursions?
Posted: Tue August 22, 2006 07:27 PM UTC
Hi, all. My wife and I are gonna be in Cornwall for one day. We've narrowed shore excursions down to two choices. They both require coach trips through the countryside from Falmouth. We're very much into gardens, not so much into house tours, but assuming you have no choice other than these two, which one has the best combination of garden, interesting house, and to-and-from scenery? Note that choice No. 1 is $56/pp more and choice No. 2 lets us wander around Fowey for a while, facts that might affect your recommendation. Thanks in advance.
***************************************************************************

Choice No. 1:
Cornwall Coast & Country
Cornwall's superb scenery has inspired travelers and artists for centuries. Visit a picturesque old seaport and an elegant country house.
WHAT YOU VISIT
Pencarrow House - Pencarrow House is one of the West Country’s last privately owned grand country houses. The elegant Georgian building sits at the end of a mile-long drive bordered by conifers, rhododendrons and camellias. Your private tour takes in delightfully furnished principle rooms, which include the music room, the pink bedroom and the boudoir overlooking the Italian gardens. The home is filled with family heirlooms, porcelain and artifacts. Outside stroll the extensive gardens, which include a sunken garden and a granite rock garden.

REFRESHMENTS
Light refreshments are served during your time at Pencarrow House.

LUNCH
Take a break for lunch at one of the leading hotels in Cornwall.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
From Falmouth, drive past Truro, the county capital and home to an impressive, three-spired cathedral, to Pencarrow. Your route crosses a peaceful countryside of small villages, granite farmhouses, and hedged fields that gives way to rolling downs as you approach Charlestown.
_____________________________________________________
Choice No. 2:
Lanhydrock House & Fowey
Travel through the valley of the River Fowey to Lanhydrock House. Explore its 49 rooms and gardens for a look at life in a Victorian country house. Then visit Fowey, one of the most picturesque harbors on the Cornish coast.
WHAT YOU VISIT
Lanhydrock House - This Cornish country estate has a long and venerable history. The present house was built by the 2nd Baron Robartes. Your guided tour explores 49 rooms for an upstairs-downstairs look at life in a 19th century Victorian household. The gardens feature formal parterres with magnificent displays of magnolias, rhododendrons and camellias climbing to oak and beech woods.

Fowey - Pronounced “Foy” to rhyme with “Joy,” this ancient Cornish harbor is a village of narrow, winding streets, flower-bedecked cottages, quaint shops and pubs. Enjoy approximately 90 minutes exploring one of the most picturesque harbors on the entire Cornish coast.

LUNCH
Lunch is on your own. Sample Cornish pasties and other local fare at one of Fowey’s pubs.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Board your motorcoach for the approximately 90-minute drive to Lanhydrock. You travel through the Fowey River valley past Liskeard and Lostwithiel. After your tour, continue down the lower river to Fowey.
