Am about to finalise my itinerary again for my next week's visit to Melbourne. At this stage, having read all the comments, am taking 4 few days road trip along Victoria as follows:
2 days on the GOR (have received feedbacks on my queries in another thread)
3rd day: Leave to Phillip Island via Mornington Peninsula (ferry to Sorrento) (likely to spend the night somewhere in Geelong after the GOR trip. Stop by at Sorrento/Portsea/Arthur's seat on the way bfore proceeding to PP and return in the evening to Melbourne.
4th day: whole day, undecided (which brings me to the query below)
Just need few more pointers:
1) I've looked through the Mornington Map/Phillip Island but am not really sure on the actual road that will lead me there. It seems to point north from Sorrento towards near Melbourne and then south again to PP. Is this the only route? How long will it take roughly from Sorrento to PP by road on the selected routes available? I dont wanna arrive that late at PP.
2) On the 4th day day, am quite interested in covering the Dandenong ranges and Healesville. Is both doable on one shot or is it too much of a rush job? Apart from the steam train, sanctuary and the tourist road, anywhere else at both places that i shouldnt miss?
We are traveling along the southrn part of australia (kingston to Melbourne). Our accomodations around melbourne is close to phillip island. Looking at a map it looks like the only way is to around the bay through Melbourne.
Is there a ferry service that crosses the bay around Ocean Grove / Dromana or somewhere like that.
Hi, am planning my itinerary for melbourne trip in a fortnight (family of 5). Just a quick q. Have a full day in which am planning to visit Philip Island for the penguins. Was advised to go there in late afternoon so i can catch it during sunset. That leaves the entire morning till noon free ( i believe its around 90 min drive from Melbourne to PP)
Can anyone recommend any suitable outskirts journey that i can cover on the same day together with Phillip Island (something like a combo day trip). Not that particular about places as long as doable with PP, although scenic/unique places are a plus. Only have one full day to cover outside Melbourne in addition to few days on the GOR track.
Hope this is the right thread as i can't find any specific ones to GOR.
Will be in Melbourne next month. Will spend few days in the city, leaving us with the last 2 days ( 2 full days, as flight out leaves at midnight on 2nd day).
Planning to drive the Great Ocean Road. I've brushed through through the sites briefly and need few cents worth of opinion.
Am planning to cover the road in 2 days (few mentioned a day trip is possible, but i prefer not to rush). Basic info. Plan to leave Melbourne by 9 a.m on day 1. Keen on watching sunset somewhere.
Must be at Melbourne Airport by 8 p.m on day 2.
Queries:
1) Where is the best place to spend a night (halfway is preferable)
2) Is there any recommendation to watch sunset at any part of the GOR and where?
3) How far must i go before i turn back towards Melbourne without missing all the must see places?
4)To return to Melbourne, is there any alternative route to take (dont want to take the same route preferably)
5) Any disadavantages of taking an MPV instead of a normal car for the drive?
Hope this is not too much. Have few more questions regarding my trip but i'll post it in separate threads.

I'm going to move to Melbourne at the end of the year (got the visa but not the flight yet) and it'd be great if someone could advise on a couple of things. I am checking on the internet but was wondering:
-how much can the rent be per month for a decent single room in a flat/house to share in a decent area in the centre? can it be an average of 150/200 AUS per week?
- Is gumtree.com good for house hunting?
- are there any areas to avoid to rent a place? I know that every city has its (let's say) bad areas.
- What's the best web page for genral info about living there?
- is it true that at the end of the day, cost of living is like in the UK?
My domestic flight gets into melbourne at 7pm. my flight to Dubai (emerates) doesn't leave until 3am, I dont want to go into the city, is there a lounge I can pay to use or any suggestions would be appreciated
Cheers ;)

Hi All
I'll be going to Melbourne on 21st of November and will be there for 18 days. Besides visiting the city I am also interested in other surrounding areas out of Melbourne city. I don't mind hiring a car and driving around and spending one or two nights out of the city. In my mind, I'm thinking of fruit orchards, honey farm and lavender fields. Is there any ?

Hi I am thinking of taking the bus service from Mansfield to Mt Buller, however I found that the bus fare is relatively expensive (AUD50/pax return) as compare to the car parking fee at Mt Buller (only AUD34 aday). Do you think it is safe to drive up and do we need to fix the chain in Mt Buller route? Is the road icy? For your information, we have no experience driving on snowy road. Pls advise.
Hi would like to know can caravan enter the city centre?
I wanted to go to victoria market and luna park but some people told me that i can't drive my caravan into the city.

Hi, I will be visiting Melbourne on August 19 with my hubby and 7 yearold daughter. However in view of the rising number of imported H1N1 cases in our country, and we had been advised to avoid visiting unless a must go trip. Since Melbourne is the most serious infected city in Australia and I had been advised not to do this trip at all especially for my daughter safety. I am really hesitating now, can anyone here stay in Melbourne give me some advices about the current situation there?
