Late night arrival Edinburgh Posted: Sun March 22, 2009 03:57 AM UTC
I arrive 10:30 pm at EDI on 2 August and am trying to arrange transport to our accomodation in Newington. As my wife and I are traveling with our young daughter, I prefer a simple and direct means of transport. As such, I am trying to book a private transfer through Onward Travel (www.onwardtravel.com), which is a recommended hire firm thru the EDI website. However, I can't make head or tails of the "destination" codes they ask you to provide (for instance they are labeled EH 4, EH 5 and so on). Can any local tell me what these codes mean? I can't get a response from the company. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Bus tours in the highlands Posted: Sat March 14, 2009 01:09 PM UTC
I'm planning to go to Scotland for about three or four days, and I was interested in those mini bus tours heading to the highlands (2/3 days tours). Are the routes the buses take winding roads? I get terrible motion sickness and winding roads always make me ill so this is something I think about when planning my travels.

Local buses Posted: Tue February 17, 2009 09:18 AM UTC
Hi,
I've been to Edinburgh lots of times but this time I have most of a day (in March) and want to do something different.
Are there any local buses to places like Crail or Callender or a nice scenic place to which I can take a bus, explore, and then return to Edinbugh at about 5 p.m. the same day?
Thanks very much.

Edinburgh for a romantic Sunday... Posted: Thu January 8, 2009 03:37 PM UTC
Hi all,
I'm thinking of taking my other half to Edinburgh for a romantic day on Sunday 22nd February as a late Valentine's Day present.
Can anyone recommend a cheapish day itinery please?
We will be arriving at 11:59 if we go and leaving at 19:00.
So basically seven hours to justify the £22.00 each on train fares from York.
Thanks!

the credit crunch has finally hit my wallet (oh dear) Posted: Sat December 6, 2008 12:39 PM UTC
Dear all
Are there any decent Chinese buffet restaurants in Edinburgh? I mean the “eat as much as you like” sort of place where you can stuff your face for next to nothing, preferably within walking from Princess Street.
Thank you all in advance.

First NYE in Edinburgh Posted: Fri November 28, 2008 07:36 AM UTC
This is my first trip to Scotland. I'll be in Edinburgh over New Years. From my understanding, most of the fun and excitement happens on Princes street, so I got a hotel room near there. Does anyone have any advice on where to hit on NYE? What is the dress of the general area (black tie, casual, in-between)?
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction...

Fringe and Tattoo. Posted: Sat September 27, 2008 07:36 PM UTC
Its a year away but I like to plan ahead. I want to do the Fringe and tattoo next August and would like to stay in central Edinburgh or as near as damn it. It would be silly of me to say as cheap as possible as I know the prices for this time go silly, crazy but can anyone suggest a suitable place for five folk for five days Mon to Fri. It would consist of two adults sharing, a child age 11 and another adult who needs their own room.
Any ideas would be terrific AS WOULD A LOTTERY WIN TO PAY FOR IT ALL LOL

Places to visit on NYE or New Years day Posted: Mon September 1, 2008 05:09 PM UTC
Hi there decided to give Hogmanay another crack this year. We came up 2 years ago when it was a washout, ended up in some ropey theme bar called frankenstiens but got to admit I had one hell of a night. Had a nice meal at Jackson om New Years day aswell... cracking place on the royal mile.
Anyway my problem is I think in 2 previous visits to Edinburgh I have exahsted the touristy things to do and the price of them I doubt Ill do them again.
So we will book our hotel for New Years Eve so we can hopefully venture to the street party but any recomendations for somewhere to go on New years day rather than drive straight home. Maybe another town or city close by?? I've also been to Glasgow before and seen most things there.
Any advice would be great.

I have came accross of many B&B web-page saying that they have free on-street parking. Can anyone living here could advise the details? There is no free street parking in my own town (Hong Kong) all legal street parking here should be in paid meter parking otherwise you will be issued charge ticket.

Anyone ever use apartmentsapart.com to stay in Edinburgh or elsewhere? Posted: Wed July 23, 2008 09:45 PM UTC
My wife, myself and another couple are traveling to Edinburgh this winter and I found apartments to rent for a decent price at apartmentsapart.com. Has anyone ever dealt with them or heard anything about them. Or if you have any other advise on places to stay for a decent price i would love any suggestions. We are a little too old for a hostel but do want to be around a nice nightlife.

Two nights in Edinburgh - where should I stay? Posted: Sat July 12, 2008 04:45 AM UTC
I'm a corporate pilot, and we are going to fly the owner of the airplane to the UK in the beginning of September. We will be in Edinburgh for 2 nights. Where should I stay? What area? What hotel? Where should we eat and what should we not miss seeing while we are there? Thanks!

Restaurants Posted: Tue July 8, 2008 10:02 AM UTC
Please Help, I’m planning a stag night in August for about 20ish very well behaved chaps. Thanks to VT I’m sorted for bars to go to and got the Acomm sorted, however I need to find a Stag friendly restaurant near the grass market that does nice food and not an Italian. (the groom has a problem with cheese) Someone recommended Khushis, however they don’t take stag parties. Please help.
Thanks

Apartment Information Posted: Mon June 30, 2008 07:39 PM UTC
Greetings from the USA:
We will be visiting Edinburgh in September, and
we finally found an apartment (flat) for the
time period we were seeking (see post below).
We have a few questions we hope that someone
can answer for us about the apartment and
getting from and back to the airport.
The apartment is located:
40 St. Mary's Street
Edinburgh EH1 1SX ( near the Royal Mile? )
Does anyone know the street or the area that
the apartment is located on?
The renters claim the following:
10 min. walk to Edinburgh Castle
10 min. walk to Princess Street
7 min. walk to Holyrood Palace
1 min. walk to Royal Mile
The renters suggest that we take the Express
bus from the airport to Waverly Bridge stop.
They say from there it is only a 5 minute walk
to the apartment. ( 40 St. Mary's Street )
Is anyone familiar with the "Edinburgh Shuttle"?
Supposed to be door to door service. They say it
only cost 15 GBP for 2 people.
Last choice would be taxi from the airport in
case of bad weather. What should the cost be for
a taxi approximently.
Is there a travel card available for the public
transportation like 3 - 5 - or 7 day card?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Happy Travels,
Al and Mary - USA

Anyone interested in meeting for a drink / cup of coffee / etc.? Posted: Mon June 9, 2008 12:58 PM UTC
Hello all!
My fiancee is Scottish, but hasn't been back to his hometown of Edinburgh for over 12 years (!). We're really looking forward to this trip (for me it's the 1st ever visit to the UK)
We'll be there from Tuesday 5th until Monday 11th of August, and I was wondering whether any VT members in the area would like to meet for a chat?
(We'll be staying in the Grassmarket)
Greetings from hot & humid Dubai,

Self-Catering in the Leith Area? Posted: Fri May 30, 2008 09:33 PM UTC
We are coming over from Belfast for a wedding on September 6th and need a good steer towards a reasonably-priced flat near Our Lady Star of The Sea. Any hints? We'll probably take FLYBE from the city airport.
Thanks to you all.
