Does anyone know if the St. Giles is a nice place to stay? Any ideas for rooms for seven, preferably with kitchen facilities? We would all like to be together in an apartment style situation.
Thanks!!

Driving out of Edinburgh Posted: Tue June 9, 2009 03:03 PM UTC
Ok, so everyone has convinced me driving in the city is not a good thing to do for a beginner. I went to New Zealand with some Americans, and they seemed to have no problem adjusting to the wrong side of the street. But I guess it isn't the same in Edinburgh. So I will have to change my plans. Hows this:
If I was to spend 2 days in the city and get around by bus or whatever, where should I go?
If I was to spend the other 2 days driving out to the countryside, what would you recommend?
I wish I had more time there, but I'm lucky to be going at all.
Thanks, you've been very helpful

4 days in Edinburgh Posted: Mon June 8, 2009 07:16 PM UTC
We have never been there and I was looking for the best ways to spend our time. I'm planning on renting a car and learning how to drive on the wrong side of the street.

Best summer month to avoid midgets in Scotland? Posted: Fri June 5, 2009 07:28 PM UTC
Best summer month to avoid midgets in Scotland?
I am planning a 3 month England, Wales, Soctland, N. Ireland, and Ireland summer trip (starting in Brighton, and working up the west coast (via Wales). My question is when to arrive in Scotland when the insect problem (midgets) is not as severe? I am planning on a hiking tour of Scotland, and hitchhiking as well. If I know when the best time to visit Scotland is, I'll know to start 3-4 weeks earlier in Brighton. It should take a bout a month to take in SW England, Wales, and NE England (before entering Scotland).
Thanks

Planning Edinburgh trip, need advice Posted: Tue June 2, 2009 06:20 AM UTC
Hi all,
I am slowly putting up a plan to visit Scotland (flying in to Edinburgh) this September.
I have a few general questions:
1. Are organized day tours better than doing day trips from Edinburgh yourself (I read that transporattion is difficult). I would like to visit Glasgow, the highlands, Border Abbeys. I am not sure if it is adviseable to do them by myself via public transportation.
2. My itinerary is turning out to be like this:
Day 1 Edinburgh
Day 2 Edinburgh
Day 3 Glasgow (day trip)
Day 4 Border Abbeys (day trip)
Day 5 Highlands (day trip)
Day 6 Edinburgh
Makes sense or not?
Hope to hear from you guys soon.
Thanks in advance.

Late night arrival Edinburgh Posted: Sun March 22, 2009 02:57 AM UTC
I arrive 10:30 pm at EDI on 2 August and am trying to arrange transport to our accomodation in Newington. As my wife and I are traveling with our young daughter, I prefer a simple and direct means of transport. As such, I am trying to book a private transfer through Onward Travel (www.onwardtravel.com), which is a recommended hire firm thru the EDI website. However, I can't make head or tails of the "destination" codes they ask you to provide (for instance they are labeled EH 4, EH 5 and so on). Can any local tell me what these codes mean? I can't get a response from the company. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you.

Bus tours in the highlands Posted: Sat March 14, 2009 12:09 PM UTC
I'm planning to go to Scotland for about three or four days, and I was interested in those mini bus tours heading to the highlands (2/3 days tours). Are the routes the buses take winding roads? I get terrible motion sickness and winding roads always make me ill so this is something I think about when planning my travels.

Local buses Posted: Tue February 17, 2009 08:18 AM UTC
Hi,
I've been to Edinburgh lots of times but this time I have most of a day (in March) and want to do something different.
Are there any local buses to places like Crail or Callender or a nice scenic place to which I can take a bus, explore, and then return to Edinbugh at about 5 p.m. the same day?
Thanks very much.

Edinburgh for a romantic Sunday... Posted: Thu January 8, 2009 02:37 PM UTC
Hi all,
I'm thinking of taking my other half to Edinburgh for a romantic day on Sunday 22nd February as a late Valentine's Day present.
Can anyone recommend a cheapish day itinery please?
We will be arriving at 11:59 if we go and leaving at 19:00.
So basically seven hours to justify the £22.00 each on train fares from York.
Thanks!

the credit crunch has finally hit my wallet (oh dear) Posted: Sat December 6, 2008 11:39 AM UTC
Dear all
Are there any decent Chinese buffet restaurants in Edinburgh? I mean the “eat as much as you like” sort of place where you can stuff your face for next to nothing, preferably within walking from Princess Street.
Thank you all in advance.

First NYE in Edinburgh Posted: Fri November 28, 2008 06:36 AM UTC
This is my first trip to Scotland. I'll be in Edinburgh over New Years. From my understanding, most of the fun and excitement happens on Princes street, so I got a hotel room near there. Does anyone have any advice on where to hit on NYE? What is the dress of the general area (black tie, casual, in-between)?
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction...

Fringe and Tattoo. Posted: Sat September 27, 2008 06:36 PM UTC
Its a year away but I like to plan ahead. I want to do the Fringe and tattoo next August and would like to stay in central Edinburgh or as near as damn it. It would be silly of me to say as cheap as possible as I know the prices for this time go silly, crazy but can anyone suggest a suitable place for five folk for five days Mon to Fri. It would consist of two adults sharing, a child age 11 and another adult who needs their own room.
Any ideas would be terrific AS WOULD A LOTTERY WIN TO PAY FOR IT ALL LOL

Places to visit on NYE or New Years day Posted: Mon September 1, 2008 04:09 PM UTC
Hi there decided to give Hogmanay another crack this year. We came up 2 years ago when it was a washout, ended up in some ropey theme bar called frankenstiens but got to admit I had one hell of a night. Had a nice meal at Jackson om New Years day aswell... cracking place on the royal mile.
Anyway my problem is I think in 2 previous visits to Edinburgh I have exahsted the touristy things to do and the price of them I doubt Ill do them again.
So we will book our hotel for New Years Eve so we can hopefully venture to the street party but any recomendations for somewhere to go on New years day rather than drive straight home. Maybe another town or city close by?? I've also been to Glasgow before and seen most things there.
Any advice would be great.

What is meaning of free on-street parking in Edinburgh Posted: Sun August 3, 2008 01:34 AM UTC
I have came accross of many B&B web-page saying that they have free on-street parking. Can anyone living here could advise the details? There is no free street parking in my own town (Hong Kong) all legal street parking here should be in paid meter parking otherwise you will be issued charge ticket.
many thanks
