Hi

I plan to visit London for a week next year in the summer. I would like to visit Glasglow, Scotland, for 3 to 4 days. Any cheap flights from London? How long does it take from London to Glasglow by train and the price of a return ticket? thanks

London Notting Hill Carnival Parade TIMES???
Posted: Thu August 27, 2009 10:14 AM UTC
Greetings -
I've checked out numerous Notting Hill Carnival sites, and none give the actual beginning TIMES of the parades - Sunday's or Monday's. Does anyone know? Also, best places to stand (and time to be there) for a good view. I can only go on Sunday, wah. Any VT'ers wanting to meet up there or after - I'm HERE in London, and would love to grab a coffee and travel chat! So let me know.

London Where to go shopping as a man?
Posted: Wed August 26, 2009 06:48 PM UTC
Hi,

I'd like to know where you can go shopping as a man without spending a fortune (something similar to H&M or Esprit is fine for me). I need some shoes, a pair of trousers...nothing extravagant, just the usual stuff. I usually pay about 40-50 € for a pair of jeans and 60-70 € for footwear. That's about the money I'm willing to spend.

Thanks a lot!

London Layover leaving the airport
Posted: Wed August 26, 2009 09:48 AM UTC
Am posting for a friend...
I have not had a layover in Heathrow long enough to ever think about leaving the airport to know this first hand.

However, a friend of mine has a few hours and wants to exit, meet his son for a short time and return. There is no problems with customs, immigration or time.

The question is regarding departure taxes. If he has a boarding pass already in hand, will Heathrow require him to pay any additional tax to get return through security?

I've traveled some places and had no problems with this (ex. Germany, France, USA). However, there are places which require tax for entering security because the airport views that as a stop-over (ex. Japan).

London London neighborhoods
Posted: Mon August 24, 2009 02:22 AM UTC
My husband and I will be arriving in London on Sept.10. We're looking for a hotel room that will suit the needs of 3 generations: my parents and 3-year old son will be arriving the following day. I feel that staying in an expensive hotel may be just a waste--we'll be out sight-seeing the whole day or taking daytrips outside of London.

For the most part, we will be spending 2 nights, maybe 3, in London. I've done internet research and I've narrowed down the hotels in these neighborhoods: Kensington, Bayswater, Paddington, and Victoria. If London is just like any major US city, then there will be areas that one should never be exploring at night (the hubby and I may go out for drinks when the little one goes to bed and we don't want to wander late at night if it's not safe).

Which neighborhood should we stay at?

London Bed&Breakfast in London
Posted: Sun August 23, 2009 06:55 PM UTC
I'm looking for a bed & breakfast (preferably close to the nightlife scene). I'd like to have an "English" feel for my vacation, as opposed to staying in a hotel chain, but a hostel is out of the question.

Or an apartment would be okay too, I think. Where can I find more information/book my stay?

London where to rent a car from
Posted: Sun August 23, 2009 06:50 PM UTC
I've read all the numerous postings about NOT renting a car in London. I'm listeing to the suggestions. However, I still want a car to drive to the countryside, maybe even take a trip to Scotland. Where is the most ideal location to rent the car from (I will be returning it at that same location then heading to Heathrow airport).

London London Travelcard
Posted: Wed August 19, 2009 08:37 PM UTC
We want to purchase two London 3 Day Travelpasses but our research shows confusing results. Some sites say "no 3 day passes" some say "No 2for1 specials". Is Heathrow also considered a trainstation? If so, I should be able to buy my passes there when we arrive. I've written Rail Europe but haven't received an answer. Thankyou!

London Over 35 on a Saturday night - what to do?
Posted: Wed August 19, 2009 05:57 PM UTC
I'll be back in London in a few weeks and I'll actually have a Saturday night on my own (I typically visit only on weekdays). On prior weekend visits I haven't had any luck finding any venues that cater more to an 35-and over crowd around central London. Pubs are great, but I'm wondering if there are any alternatives. Ronnie Scotts has been suggested - is this the only option? Thanks for any suggestions.

London Houses of Parliament visit
Posted: Mon August 17, 2009 10:59 AM UTC
Hi, does anyone know if when visiting the Houses of Parliament, you have to put anything liquid, ie, perfume, lip balm etc in a plastic bag as you do on an aircraft? On the website it just says that you can only take hand-sized luggage, but says nothing about what to do with anything liquid.

Hope someone can help. Sarah

London 24/7 Tourbus
Posted: Mon August 17, 2009 05:17 AM UTC
I'm traveling to London in September. I've been told that the best way to see London is to go on those red tourbuses, which run 24 hours a day and I can hop-on and hop-off at any of the bus stops. Which tourbus company provides this service and how much are we talking about?

London Currency and meals
Posted: Fri August 14, 2009 02:03 PM UTC
I realized I need to get currency before traveling to London (I got used to travel around Europe without caring about!). Before going to the bank, I want to calculate how much to change.

Are credit cards commonly accepted at restaurants, pubs, shops, attractions, etc?
Can we pay Oyster or Travelcard and the Stansted Express with visa?
Does anybody know if rates are more convenient once in England or in Spain?

I know meal schedules are quite different from ours. Until what time can we have dinner? I suppose it depends on the restaurant/pub we go, but any information or advice would be appreciated.

London London Pass with Travel? a good buy?
Posted: Wed August 12, 2009 04:20 AM UTC
Hi, I'll be in London and other parts of UK for about a month. (two
weeks at least in London.) Is the London Pass a good buy?..what are the
"catches"...(here in U.S., there'always a "catch" ...that you may not
be aware of when you think you've got a bargain). I would buy the 6
day LondonPass for an adult...and I know its requirements: 6 consecutive
days of use...and free entry to a number of attractions. What additional
advantage would the "London Pass with Travel" offer? (It's hard to know
in advance what 6 consecutive days I'd want sign up for--perhaps the
2nd or 3rd day after arrival in London..) You need to buy ONLine. Would I be
better off buying the "Oyster Card"?

Would appreciate suggestions...I'll be staying in Bloomsbury..
assume transport to Central London by "Tube" would be included in
"London Pass.with Travel"....

I can call their number directly, but would like your input first.

Thanks, Ruthanna

London Breakfast near Kensington road
Posted: Sun August 9, 2009 08:38 PM UTC
We are a family for five staying in an apartment at the john howard hotel at the end of august. Hotel breakfast is extra and is £12.50 (adult) and £6.50 (child), so £44 a day x3 days so extortionate. Can anybody recommend anywhere near here? Kensinnington road/high street area. There are no jd weatherspoons or aphostreuk near enough.

London obtaining cash in pounds in London and other parts of UK ?
Posted: Tue August 4, 2009 07:43 PM UTC
Hello

I am still not certain how to obtain spending money in pounds in
London. May I use my debit card at ATM's to get the cash I need
(for smaller purchases)?. Cash advances through a credit card are
very expensive (about 21%)...would pay $20.00 for advance of $100.00)
I can bring $100.00 bills and carry in money belt,or travellers checks,
but would prefer to use a debit card. (such as I could use here in California). My bank says "yes", but just to double check on them at VT. In other words, when I arrive at Heathrow with a few dollars...can I first proceed to an ATM and get cash in pounds? (a taxi will be waiting for me).

Thanks, Ruthanna

London gift for a firefighter
Posted: Mon August 3, 2009 01:54 PM UTC
christinej just made me think! I am leaving my husband home alone while I am taking my London/Paris/Rome trip with my recent high school graduate daughter. He is feeling a little left out. I am thinking it would be nice to get him something special. He is a career firefighter who helped during NYC 911 disaster, New Orleans Hurricane Katrina, and most recently a mass school shooting. (I am sharing this to let you know how near and dear emergency rescue is to his heart). Any suggestions on something special to bring a firefighter from London?
Thanks again.

London 12 hours in London
Posted: Mon August 3, 2009 08:03 AM UTC
Hello,

I have a 12.5 hour layover this friday in London on my way to Nairobi from LA and am wondering if anyone could give me advice on what I should do/see in that time. Also, I am assuming that I will need to go through immigration etc. to leave the airport and check in when I return. Any idea on how long this process will take and how much time I will have leftover? Also, what should I absolutely see and what is the most convenient way to get from Heathrow to central London?

Thanks for the help, cannot wait for my first time in London, although it will be a quick stop.
