I have two train journeys to make whilst in the US: NY (Penn Station) to New Haven, and New Haven > Boston.

I am tempted to buy tickets online in advance a) because I suspect there may be a wider range of cheaper fares and b) because I'm not used to trains which get full-up (the vast majority of European trains cannot get full-up) and am thus a little wary of being stuck in NY (and/or New Haven).

If I do this then I can pick up the tickets at a Quiktrak kiosk or at the ticket office. Amtrak won't post the tickets to me (fair enough).

1. Have you found Quiktrak kiosks at Penn station (or elsewhere) to be efficient/actually working and not to have ridiculously long queues? Are they happy with European chipped cards?

2. What about queues at ticket offices? As a general everyday rule, are US railway ticket offices besieged by customers or are queues reasonable?
