Oxford Any locals want to meet up in Oxford?
Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 03:09 PM UTC
I've just moved to Oxford and my contact list is about as long as my pinky finger. Any locals here interested in meeting up for a beverage of sorts? I am here for a good long while and that good long while is filled with sweet nothings so...my schedule is flexible. Let's hang out! :)

Oxford Does budget accommodation exist in Oxford?
Posted: Wed April 30, 2008 04:11 PM UTC
I'd like to spend a weekend in Oxford in June but can't find any budget accommodation. Are there any cheap (around £50) B & B's, preferably walking distance to the train station? Everywhere I've found is quite expensive and all the hostels seem to only have dorm rooms rather than doubles.

Any ideas or do I need to forget about going to Oxford?

Oxford Oxford and Gloucester
Posted: Thu January 24, 2008 03:40 AM UTC
Hi. I'll be arriving in London on 29 April 2007 but I'd also like to see Gloucester and Oxford. I have time from 2 May - 6 May before I have to be in London again to fly to Frankfurt on 7 May.

Am also not sure which one to see first. Oxford or Gloucester?

I will be grateful if any members can help me with the following questions:

(1) What is the cheapest way to get to and from Oxford and Gloucester; and how much do I have to pay?
(2) How much time will I need to see Oxford and Gloucester?
(3) Trains and buses, how much travelling time will they need?

Thanks and regards,
AV

Oxford Mobile Phones/UK Sim cards
Posted: Tue May 1, 2007 07:22 PM UTC
How is the cell phone reception in Oxford. Are there certain networks that have better reception/coverage than others. Does it matter which "company" I buy my sim card from? It seems like "mobile world" has the best deals for UK sim cards, but how is the coverage using mobile world at oxford?

Oxford Living expenses in Oxford
Posted: Wed January 17, 2007 02:57 PM UTC
Hello everybody,

I'm considering to undertake postgraduate study at Oxford Brookes (it's among my top three choices), but first I would like to make a calculation of living expenses.

Please help me to determine basic prices (per month), such as:

- accommodation (shared flat)
- electricity, water
- internet
- telephone (mobile)
- food
- drinks
- transport from the Stansted Airport

Is there anything else I have to bear in mind in terms of costs?

Thank you very much in advance!

Greetings from Ljubljana,
Ursa

Oxford how carry luggage from luton to oxford
Posted: Fri June 16, 2006 08:38 AM UTC
Dear friends,
I am arriving to Luton airport with a group of friends in a week. We have rented an economic car to go to Oxford, but we afraid it is to small for our luggage (we are 5 girls). Any idea about what we can do?
There is any lockers where we can leave the luggage that won“t have room in the car and come back next day to take it? There is any way, not expensive, to send the luggage from luton to london?
By the way, do you know how long it takes from Luton airport to Oxford?

Oxford VT Members in Oxford

Oh, and I forgot to add, if anyone is going to be around in Oxford 16-31 July and wants to meet up, that'd be great. It seems that every time I go anywhere, it's always by myself! :-( (now, isn't that a tad bit depressing?)

Oxford St. Anne's College
Posted: Sun June 4, 2006 05:29 PM UTC
I'm going to Oxford 14-31 July for a conference. I'll be staying at St. Anne's. Any comments on this part of Oxford? I know it's a little north of Oxford and I keep looking at the maps and I can't figure out if it's far, if it's walkable, how long it'll take to get to the center / touristy part of Oxford. So if someone can give me a sense of how large the city is in general, where St. Anne's is in relation to the major sites, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also suggestions on good places to eat near by (I'm getting VT tips for areas other St. Anne's and I don't want to have to go very far late at night to get something to eat, or during my lunch breaks and such). Places to go, grocery stores nearby, what the general area is like. Also, what is the cheapest/fastest way of getting to central london from Oxford for day trips, as I have to get to the City for business on certain days. I'm getting conflicting suggestions, such as megabus.com for 5 pound rides or the Oxford tube (which apparently is a bus?).

Also, I'll be arriving at Heathrow and going directly to Oxford. I know there is a coach or bus or something that provides a direct line from Heathrow to Oxford, but once I arrive in Oxford, how would I get to St. Anne's (the site isn't helping me at all with directions and the maps come out all distorted).

Please, any tips, suggestions, comments! Thanks!! :-)

Oxford Cambridge vs Oxford
Posted: Sun May 7, 2006 01:27 PM UTC
I know it's difficult to compare two different cities, but I'm trying to get an idea of how Cambridge and Oxford are different and similar. I stayed in Cambrdige for a month back in 1991 and loved it. What I really liked was that it was relaxed, peaceful, laid back, and casual, but the city was beautiful and still had plenty to do and see (such as the churches, punting the Cam, walking around looking at all the interesting old architecture, and of course all the pubs). I also liked the fact that I could walk everywhere because the city is so small in area. How does Oxford compare using those criteria? And is one city generally more expensive than the other in terms of accommodations and eating?

Oxford Introduce kids to Oxford
Posted: Sat March 11, 2006 10:59 PM UTC
I'm looking for suggestions of things to do with 10 year old children - one boy and one girl - in Oxford. We're there for 10 days in early August for a Harry Potter program but have a lot of free time. I lived in Oxford for a few amazing years but can only recall doing brass rubbing at one of the churches on the High (St. Mary's, I think) with a visiting child. Need a lot more ideas. Thanks for your help.

Oxford Overnight Parking for staying at Malmaison
Posted: Fri January 27, 2006 07:25 AM UTC
We are booked to stay at the new Malmaison Castle hotel but they have no car park. It seems that the trains are on strike on Sunday (when we leave) so only bus service to Didcot Parkway then train. Is it safe to leave a car at the Park and Ride for 2 nights? If not then where would it be safe to park a car overnight. We are coming from South London so bus not an option as it would take us an hour to get to the Victoria bus station.

Oxford More parking questions - decisions decisions
Posted: Wed June 15, 2005 07:43 PM UTC
We have booked a rental car and will be travelling from Heathrow on a Monday to Stratford Upon Avon and plan to have a few hours in Oxford on the way. Car parking looks a real problem in the city and Park and Ride seems the way to go BUT:-

(A) Should we park on the East side of town say at Thornhill which would be the closest in the morning when we get there?
OR
(B) Should we park on the North West side of town say Pear Tree or Seacourt so it is easier to get away in the afternoon?

Advice please

Oxford Overnight parking for a week in Oxford
Posted: Wed June 1, 2005 07:31 PM UTC
We will be visiting our daughter in Oxford for a week near the end of June before continuing on a self-guided tour of the country for another few weeks. It is cheaper to rent the car at the arrival airport and return it there, even though we do not need it in Oxford.
Are there safe and not too exorbitant places to leave the car for the week we will be in Oxford? I expect it will have to be outside the ring road, but that is no problem.

Oxford Half a day in Oxford, please help me plan...
Posted: Tue May 3, 2005 10:49 PM UTC
I will be in UK for a day and a half, and want to go to Oxford for a few hrs. Actually, I will be getting into Heathrow around 10am on a Wednesday morning, and then my brother and I are planning to drive to oxford ( he has a car) for the rest of the day.
Can you all wonderful people give me ideas of places to see within that period. Would like to do tea there, as well a pub lunch. Would like to walk in center of Oxford, check out shops, bookstores and old buildings. I know there will be a lot left to see however I just want to see the essence of Oxford.
Any ideas would be much much appreciated.

Thanks,

Desiree.

Oxford Pub work in Oxford Dec/Jan 2005/6
Posted: Tue April 19, 2005 05:34 PM UTC
Three friends and myself are university students from South Africa and will be staying in Eynsham (near oxford)for roughly 2 months over Dec/jan. And are looking to work in Pubs in oxford (or near by) while we are there. But not physically being in the UK makes looking for jobs really difficult, so if any body knows of any pubs that need staff over the winter months could they please let me know! So if you could give me contact details of pubs or advice on how to go about looking for pub work, even though im not in the country it would be GREATLY appreciated! :)

Oxford Summer jobs and lodging in Oxford
Posted: Sun March 27, 2005 09:05 PM UTC
Hello - my daughter's college roommate is taking a 6 week course (May & June) at Oxford and wanted my daughter to go with her so the two girls could travel together on weekends and for a few weeks after the class ends.

Is it possible for my daughter to get a part-time job (she is a US citizen) at a fun, safe place like a coffee shop in Oxford? What permits are required? What about lodging? Are there good, safe hostels for a girl staying by herself?

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks - David

Oxford Sending My Beach Boy to Oxford
Posted: Tue January 4, 2005 02:56 AM UTC
My 21 yr old son Christopher will be coming to Oxford Jan 27 to attend school until the 10th of May. He has never traveled outside of California, so this will be a very big change for him. I want to help him be prepared as much as possible, in the way of cell phones (how and what kind?), clothing and items he should bring from home. Can anyone help with some much needed tips for a grateful mom?
