Has anyone stayed at the "Damascus Hostel" - www.damascushostel.com - it looks like a very interesting choice...Have heard overall negative comments about AL Majib..am not picky at all (see my hotel/hostel picks!) - any ideas for staying in old Damascus houses - ahve not found any good sites/links and guidebooks are hopelessly out of date...

Damascus KRAK FOR THE DAY
Posted: Sun February 10, 2008 08:32 AM UTC
I only have a few days in Syria - coming over from Beirut for three or maybe four days. I was wondering if anyone has done Krak in a day? Are there organized tours or is it best to take a bus (and then connect to Krak) or get a driver for the day - as I don't have time have to pay for the convenience.

Syria Hama / Aleppo
Posted: Wed February 6, 2008 09:49 PM UTC
Hi,

Thanks to all the valuable information on this site, I've been able to make some concrete plans for our stay in Syria. For the moment, I have two major questions...
1) We are in Syria for a week only and traveling by public transport. Therefore we might skip Aleppo. Is that a good idea, or are we missing out on a lot?
2) We plan to stay in Hama for a number of day and make some day trips (to Apamea, Qala'at Saladin and the Dead Cities, Sarouj...). Is it easy to do so by public transport, or can we arrange excursions like these through hotels? How much would we pay if we take a trip organised by a hotel?

Thanks again!

Syria language and travel
Posted: Wed February 6, 2008 07:46 AM UTC
hi

we are a couple that would like to travel in syria (and jordan). neither of us speaks arabic. travel agencies tell us that it will be impossible for us to travel alone. is this simply because they would like to sell us one of their organized trips, or is it really difficult to travel in syria without knowledge of arabic?

thanks!

Syria Syria and Isreal
Posted: Tue February 5, 2008 04:33 PM UTC
Hi

I am travelling through Egypt, Jordan and Syria in April and would like to know whether we can go to Jerusalem or not. I have heard that once you enter into Isreal - Jordan, Syria and a few other countries will deny you entry.
Is this still true? We will be visiting Jerusalem in a day trip from Dahab in Egypt.

Thanks

Damascus Professor of English / student of Arabic searching for an apartment in the Shaalan District.
Posted: Mon January 14, 2008 06:59 AM UTC
Searching for apartment in Damascus. I will be traveling to Damascus this month -- Jan 2008. I prefer the Shaalan. I will need the apartment for months. As I will be alone, I need only two or three warm, secure rooms. Third-floor okay. High-speed internet a plus. A real estate agent in Damascus knows me -- he will handle the paperwork for the rental. Though I am an instructor of writing and literature, I will attend the Kuliat Al Adab in Mezzeh as a student of Arabic.

Syria Getting from Turkey to Syria?
Posted: Tue December 18, 2007 10:35 AM UTC
Dear all,

I am going to be traveling to Syria next week. I am starting out in Georgia, going to the Turkish border, and then taking a bus from there - but to where? Where should I go in Turkey to cross into Syria? I am thinking Gaziantep, but please correct me if I am wrong. In Syria, I first need to get to Aleppo. Is there direct bus service between some Turkish city and Aleppo? Or maybe a train?

If anyone has any clues, I'd be much obliged. Wouldn't want to figure that out in Turkey without speaking a word of Turkish...

Damascus Travel by train
Posted: Mon December 10, 2007 02:40 PM UTC
Hello,
We are planning to visit Damascus in January. While we will be there we also would like to visit Aleppo as well. Our travel plan is visiting Damascus first and go to Aleppo by train and go back to our country (Turkey) by train also. We would like to know if there are any train services between Damascus and Aleppo. If there is a train between Damascus and Aleppo we will schedule our travel with that option. Could anyone reply my question please? Thank you very much in advance. Zuhal.

Syria Marriage in Syria
Posted: Sun December 9, 2007 05:17 AM UTC
In my previous posts, I asked about the process of a US citizen marrying a Syrian citizen. I have found out more than I wanted to know, and I thank everyone who has replied to me. My relationship (and proposed marriage) did not work out after all, but I enjoyed visiting Syria very much!
In fact, I am going to Damascus in January and wondered if anyone has tips of things to see and what the weather might be like.

Syria Palmyra to Amman?
Posted: Fri December 7, 2007 09:08 AM UTC
Hi,

Thank you all for responding to my previous questions. I wanted to ask, is there a bus service from Palmyra to Amman or Jerash? I was thinking of first seeing Damascus, then Aleppo and then Palmyra, finally heading to Jordan, seeing smaller cities along the way.

Damascus travel and hotel advice
Posted: Mon November 19, 2007 01:29 PM UTC
We are planning on visiting Damascus and Aleppo next month, December 27, 2007 to Jan 3, 2008. Please advice about good but not outrageously expensive hotels/b&b in both places. We prefer locally run establishments. As well, what is the best way to travel between Damascus and Aleppo? What are the must see/do things in both places. Thank you.
