I am planning to drive from Dubai to Salalah on 22-Sep, starting early in the morning with an intention to reach Salalah same evening. Can someone answer the following questions for me?
1. what is the travel duration if I drive at an average speed of 120 Kmph with a 15 min break every 2-3 hours?
2. What time should I start from Dubai if I want to reach by around 7pm in Salalah?
3. My car is under the bank's name. Is it ok if I drive through Oman border with my car under lien hypothecated to bank.
4. I have a Suzuki Grand Vitara which gives me a distance of about 400-450 on a single tankful. Do I need to carry extra fuel?
5. Any other driving tips?
Can anyone tell me if there are any nice budget hotels for backpackers/independent travelers? Or are there camping areas? I checked some of the hotels but they seemed really expensive, maybe that is just the going rate in Muscat. We will be there the end of Nov and only staying a few days. Thanks for the help.
Does anyone have any recent info regarding unmarried tourist couples travelling in Oman. Is it best just to say you are married? We are over 50, & not going to do anything too wild. Also, what exactly is a girl to wear? I do not want to offend, but on the other hand, I do not want to cook in the heat either. Thanks

I'm going to Muscat in a couple of weeks and need to arrange a taxi for myself, girlfriend and 6 month baby to the Shangri La. Does anyone have any tips or know any reliable drivers I can contact. Any idea of cost I wold need to barter for to the Shangri La. I don't particularly want to get ripped off! Also, does anyone know of any local guides as well because I would like to hire a car and driver for a day or two whilst there and would be good to do through one person.
we like to travel with a local bus from dubai(UAE) to musqat(Oman) and back.
Who has done that before and can answer my questions?
- is it possible to obtain visa for Oman at the border (I am from the Netherlands and they told me, I could get a visa in Oman, and if so, how many time will it take to get one. We don't want to (and possibly can't) delay the bus.
- can you rely on the schedules?
- any other mustknows?
most hotels are a bit expensive. Are there good lowbudget options in dubai/musqat?
I'm traveling to Salalah in summer with my husband and our dog. As dogs are not aloud in hotels, we want to rent a villa. Does anyone have an idea how to find a place? Our dog is very well trained, very clean and doesn't bark.
Hi we are a family of 5 travelling from South Africa to Dubai. We would like to spend 3/4 days in Oman as it looks wonderful for photography and hopefully some snorkeling on the coast. Do we hire our own car in Dubai or go on a organised tour. Love doing the "off the beaten track routes" where do we stay over? not wanting very fancy accommodation. Any advice would really be appreciated. Travelling at the end of April so need to make arrangements soon.
Thanks
Julie - from SA
I am traveling to Oman at the end of March and would like to hire a local guide with 4x4 to visit some sites both North and South of muscat over a 2-3 day period. I have searched the internet and found mostly formal tours with set schedules and itineraries. I would like something more flexable and affordable. Any help would be great!

I am planning a travel route, (which places to include, exclude) in Oman for a 3-4 week trip in Jan/Feb. I am looking for the "The Best of Oman"
CRITERIA for LIST:
1) memorable/dramatic scenery, landscape photography, or specifically where to find the best (viewpoints, vistas, city views, natural views, panoramas, skylines, sunsets, etc..)? Also looking for the unique outdoors, hikes/hilltops/lookouts, and other amazing, breathtaking views?
2) lovely/charming streets, cute villages, hidden nooks/places, and magnificent/attractive architecture?
3) authentic/unforgettable "local" travel experiences or non-typical, interesting/special experiences (full of original character), and unique only to the local area.
4) specialty/unique regional cuisine/gastronomy
-Muscat, Trekkingoman dot com has some great hiking ideas, Old Muscat town, what's there really?, take drives to other parts of Muscat for viewpoints over the mountains, Shatti al qurm walk on the beach, Al Bustan viewpoint at hotel, Muttrah souk, Al Ghubrah mosque, Sultan Qaboos mosque, Hikman dunes, but where are they? Wadi Al Kabir viewpoint, Muscat festival website is still down, what can I expect in 2009?
-Just outside Muscat, Nakhal, Rustaq towns
-Nizwah, fort, Bahla, early morning friday goat market, Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn sites, Ibri town, Hajar-Al Gharbi mountain range, Al-hamara town, Misfat town, El Ibriyyeen? What is it?, Jebel Akhdar mountain, Jebel Shaam mountain,
then south to Ibra, Wadi Bani Khalid, Sharqia/Wahabia sands, how do I try sandboarding? I would also like to rent a car, but I have limited funds. I have friends in Oman who can do the driving/guiding for free, but I need to rent the car/insurance? What kind of deal can I get for 2-3 days?
-Sur (south of Muscat on the coast), Majlis Al Jinn/Kehf Salma cave, Qalhat town, Tiwi town, Hajar-Al Sharqi mountain range, Sharqia sands
Which prepay provider is better? Nawras, or Omanmobile? I only need an Omani number (to contact my Omani friends in Oman by SMS), no roaming or International calls, just cheap SMS is sufficient. After 4 weeks in Oman, I am going to UAE for 3 weeks, it would be good to know which provider has bettern international SMS rates in case I have Omani credit leftover after my trip in Oman is done.
Hi everyone,
Me and my girlfriend are flying to Bangkok via Muscat. We've just been told that our flights have been changed and that we have a 16 hour stopover in Oman. Strangely enough, I don't fancy hanging around the airport! I have a couple of questions, hope someone can help?!
Is it easy to get a visa to leave the airport?
Does the airline you are flying with affect how easy this is? ( have heard reports that some airlines do not allow passengers to leave the airport if in transit?!)
How far is it to town?
Any recommendations on what to do where to go?
Our flight arrives at 6pm.
Thinking we could go out to eat then get a hotel to rest in till the next flight.
Any ideas/input would be much appreciated. (by the way we are uk citizens and flying with Oman airlines in case that affects the visa price and options for leaving the airport)
Thanks in advance!
Tim
im just wondering if there are other families like ours who will be heading to salalah on 5th Dec 2008 (eid break). i think it will be more fun and safer to travel in groups than travelling alone.

my partner and I have a 10 day stopover in Dubai, and I would like to spend most of that time travelling in Oman as I have heard wonderful things about the country.
I have been unable to ascertain whether it is appropriate for an unmarried couple to be travelling together in Oman?
If so, would being engaged or staying in separate rooms solve any problems?
It has been surprisingly difficult to get information about this, so any advice would be really appreciated!
