VT Meet in Dublin on Wednesday 11/4 Posted: Sun October 25, 2009 01:06 AM UTC
Hi,
This isn't a question -- just a notice/reminder. I have posted a VT meeting at The Long Stone Pub in Dublin on Wednesday November 4th at 7 pm. The Long Stone is located at 10 Townsend Street in the Dublin city center (or should I say centre?) near Trinity College.
http://meetings.virtualtourist.com/1/meeting-4934-1-0-0-World-1256428661328-1287964661328-meeting.html?wosid=csgsqpVootZnAUfIhYcbNw
In a nutshell, it will be an informal meeting for dinner/drinks and conversation. If you are not interested in dinner, you can just come for drinks. So far, we have a geographically diverse group: Marg (wise23girl) from Australia, annemariebyrne (Anne Marie) from Dublin, and myself (Billnj) from New Jersey. Please sign up if you are in the area and might be interested!
Cheers,
Bill

AIRPORT SHUTTLE Posted: Fri October 16, 2009 08:20 PM UTC
I am 76 years old, so I can't walk 2 or 3 blocks carrying luggage from a shuttle bus to my hotel. What would be the best way to get from the airport to Best Western Premier Academy Plaza Hotel Findlater Place, off O'Connell Street? Do any of those shuttle buses stop at my hotel? Which one? I will be traveling with my family, 4 of us,? If we took a taxi, would we pay 4 separate fares or is it the same price for one person as four. Would it be better/cheaper for me to take a taxi?

Dublin 20-23 March 2010 - cheap accomodation Posted: Thu October 15, 2009 08:21 AM UTC
Dear all,
we will be visiting dublin for the wkd 20-23 March 2010 to celebrate a bachelors party. We will be a group of 10-12 in total.
We were looking for some cheap self-catering apartments or Hotels - do you recommend anything in particular?
Since we'll be there the wkd following St.Patrick's day would it still be hard to find accomodation?
Kind Regards
Stefan

Hey Everyone,
I'm planning on spending New Years Eve in Dublin. Where are the hot spots? Are there any special events going on that may be fun? I don't know if I'll be functional or not, but what about on New Years Day?
Thanks for your help...

Dublin in March Posted: Fri September 18, 2009 12:04 AM UTC
I am a single woman traveling to Dublin this Spring. My plan was to spend 8 days traveling around the Ring of Kerry and then spend the last day or two in Dublin. Is it worth it to book my trip over the St. Patrick's Day holidays so I am in Dublin on the 17th?

Adapter/Converter confusion .... Posted: Mon August 24, 2009 11:56 PM UTC
We are traveling to Ireland and Amsterdam in September from the US. I have read lots of horror stories about burning up batteries with the adapters. Does anyone know what would be good (and safe) to purchase for recharging batteries (computer, cell, camera, etc)? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Traveling to Dublin mid Oct 09 Posted: Fri August 21, 2009 10:48 PM UTC
Taking a two week trip to Ireland. (2 adventurous women in our 60's). Staying 2 days in Dublin, then renting a car and traveling around Ireland. Neither of us has ever driven on the left and reading the posts scares me about doing this. We were planning to drive the Ring of Kerry, but now I'm not sure we should do this. Any tips for driving and any locations where driving is better than others? Also, I've read on another site that rental companies aren't up front about insurance. Should we buy the car insurance offered by the rental company (Thrifty) or use the "free" insurance I can get on my World Master Card? Any hints, tips, etc. will be appreciated!

hotels with pools Posted: Thu August 6, 2009 06:12 PM UTC
Hello,
My family and I are coming to the Dublin area and are looking for a hotel with a pool. I just found out that the Marine hotel does not allow children in the pool after 5pm and we really would like to stay at a place where the children could swim a bit in the evening (certainly later than 5!). Does anyone know of a hotel with a pool that allows children in the evening?
thank you!

Pubs and Live music Posted: Fri July 10, 2009 11:45 PM UTC
We are off for a 2-night break to Dublin in October.
As we are staying near to the Temple Bar area, I wondered what the "craic" was about the pubs there.
I love live music of any kind but I would really like to spend an evening in a pub where you hear decent rock-oriented music rather than folk or "diddly diddly" music. We would be happy to experience all sorts but for our final 2 hours of the evening, a more rock-based venue would be preferable.
Do pubs tend to specialise or do you just hunt-around until you hear something you like?
Is there a sort of programme you can pick-up or find-out about in advance?

weather this weekend/exchange rate Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 01:48 AM UTC
hello: weather.com shows Dublin to have "light rain" this weekend--is "light rain" for dublin just a drizzle or is it something more? Also, has anyone seen what the currency exchange rate is for US dollars at the exchange houses in the city center--need to see if its a better deal (can get no fee changes using employee pass of my family) to just change here in the US before going over? (please, no discussions/personal opinions on using atms, the dollar sucks etc etc--I have been to europe a zillion times and I prefer to exchange cash for personal reasons!). Thanks!!

Opion on Taxi Company Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 05:17 PM UTC
Hello All,
We are seeing a dinner show at the Merry Ploughboy Pub which is a little outside of Dublin City Center and since we don't have a car I guess we'll be taking a taxi. The Pub's website lists a taxi company that will give us a twenty percent discount but they don't list their rates anywhere which can't be a good sign. The taxi company is Xpert Taxi. Does anyone have an opinion on if they are a good and hopefully cheap company? Maybe another company would be better? There are seven of us and I was a little wary of taking the bus since we would have to work off their scheduale and the stop might not be close to our destination. If anyone has any opinions they would be greatly appreciated, :).

Taxi Costs? Posted: Wed June 24, 2009 06:48 PM UTC
Hi, there is 3 of us (& 3 suitcases) traveling to Dublin in early Sept and was just wondering if anyone knew how much a taxi would cost from over in the city centre to the airport. I'm looking at staying at the Augustine Apartments. Or is there a better way to get to the airport from here. I fly out at 7 am so need to be at the airport by 5 am as I'm flying to Belgium. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Dublin, how many days, really Posted: Thu June 11, 2009 05:47 PM UTC
I will be arriving in Dublin for the first weekend November, specifically arriving on a Friday morning and leaving on a Tuesday morning.
How many days would you say a person should do Dublin in? I was hoping to visit a bit further afield during my stay. Are 2 nights in Dublin sufficient?
And what are the recommended - don't miss things to do? Are any days/nights better than others? Should I stay Friday and Saturday night, adn go further afield for the Sunday night? I was hoping to hit a quiet, rural area during my stay.

Dublin - via Ryan Air without hold luggage? Posted: Thu June 11, 2009 08:44 AM UTC
We managed to get cheap flights from BHX to Dublin for 2 nights in October but wondered if we could get-away with taking only hand luggage since it is only a short break?
They charge £30 or so for a suitcase which is OK seeing as I paid so little for the flight but I thought I might investigate how practical it would be without one!
I am guessing at two rucksacks or small bags for us both.
I note that there are restrictions regarding fluids - soaps, creams etc. which must be in clear plastic bags (re-sealable?) - and of course to the size of the bags themselves. Also, my wife's handbag (purse) must be INSIDE one of these rucksacks.
How have other VT-ers faired with this sort of thing? Have you tried to travel light in this way? Any tips or tricks or warnings would be very gratefully received! We won't be dressing-up particularly for meals etc. and the room has tea/coffee and a hairdryer.
Thank you!
