Galway Oyster Festival
Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 12:02 AM UTC
Has anyone attended the Galway Oyster Festival? If so, can you give me your impressions. A friend is planning a trip for a bunch of college buddies (mid-30s) and Ireland is in the running. We're wondering if planning our trip around the festival would make sense.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Galway Good traditional Irish pubs in Galway?
Posted: Sat August 1, 2009 12:57 PM UTC
Hi,
I will be visiting Galway for the first time later this year (November) -- and I was wondering if anyone could provide recommendations for some good traditional Irish pubs. I have read some good things about Monroe's -- and I plan a visit there. Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

Galway Which hotel?
Posted: Sun June 21, 2009 10:03 PM UTC
In Galway early July, 4 of us for two nights. Thinking of one of the following hotels.
Jurys Inn, Clayton Hotel or the Radisson Blu hotel. First two are roughly same price and there is only £25 per night extra for the Radisson. Any comments welcomed.

Galway Galway long-term parking lot question
Posted: Thu January 22, 2009 05:45 AM UTC
Hello -

I am considering staying at St. Martin's B&B this March.

They do not have parking, so I'll have to park in one of the long-term parking lots - probably at the Cathedral lot.

According to this page:

http://www.galwaycity.ie/AllServices/RoadsandTraffic/ParkingintheCity/PublicCarParks/

it costs 4 Euros per day to park here (Long Term Car Park).

Although I'll go on a few day-trips from Galway (requiring a car), I probably won't drive somewhere *every* day that I'm there (I may want to leave the car parked for a couple of days at a time).

So, my question is: Can I purchase a multi-day ticket to park at one of the Long Term lots, or must I return to the car at least once a day to purchase/display a new 4-Euro ticket?

Thank you!

Galway Where to stay in Galway??
Posted: Wed December 10, 2008 09:02 PM UTC
My friend and I will be in Galway this Feb. We are both young and would like to stay near town for "pub crawls". I found the Skeffington which looks promising but I would love some feedback/suggestions.

Also, would it be possible to visit a pub in Doolin for a night (easily)?

Galway House Hotel or G Hotel in Galway?
Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 07:34 AM UTC
Don't know what the local transport is like. We are trying to decide between these 2 hotels. One is in the middle of town (House Hotel) and the other G Hotel is only slightly more in price but looks amazing, however it seems to be on the outskirts of the town. If anyone knows these places, could you suggest what is the better choice for 3 days as a base. We plan to go to Aran Island by ferry and Connemara. Thanks for any feedback.

Galway rugby weekend
Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 12:51 AM UTC
Hi all, I'm one of a group of 18 welsh lads just returned from a weekend in Dublin where it was mad, there were more Welsh than Irish in Dublin and although we had a good time it would have been nice to meet some Irish people. It has been suggested that we try Galway the next time, what was it like there this weekend? would we get a good welcome in Galway??

Galway Favor to ask.......
Posted: Fri November 2, 2007 08:09 PM UTC
OK, I know it's a weird request, but if you live in or are traveling to Galway in the near future could you stop by "SALLY LONG'S" and snap me a couple of pictures of the interior wall murrals ? I ment to do it myself but everytime I had the camera they were too busy, or visa versa. The "Last Supper" wall in particular is the greatest bit of Rock-n-Roll art I've ever seen.

Galway Young Man with Steel Drum
Posted: Sun October 14, 2007 07:59 PM UTC
We were just in Galway and there was a young man with a steel drum that he played on his lap. It looked like a large covered Chinese wok - does anyone know what this instrument is called and more importantly where one can be purchased.

Galway What's the latest word on the water ?
Posted: Mon July 16, 2007 09:03 PM UTC
We'er visiting Galway in September and wondering if we need to bring in our own water. The landlady who we are to rent a cottage from assures us that "there is no water problem", and yet, there it is, splashed all over The Times.(no pun intended) Drinking water is one issue. It's fairly easy to drink bottled water, but should we worry about fresh vegetables or seafood ? We're going to be there during The Oyster Fest... Any info would be apreciated.

Galway Bead Shops

Ok, I think that I may have imagined this but are there two bead shops in the centre of Galway? I know one really exists (The Galway Bead Shop) but I had thought I'd walked past another..... If anyone knows please let me know exactly where the other one is. Or where else might be a good place to buy fine coloured wire. Thanks!

Galway Street musician in Galway?
Posted: Sat June 23, 2007 04:13 PM UTC
Dear Forum Readers,

I have a question I was hoping someone from Galway might help me with.

I'm trying to identify a street musician I heard in Galway on a Sunday in May 2004.

My Polish musician friend and I listened to a street musician playing on an upright piano. He was playing mostly piano rags while we were listening.

He was on a pedestrian street with many restaurants in what seemed to be the old center of Galway, and brought the piano out of what I think was a restaurant, and played in front of a building made of gray stone, with a beautifully decorated entryway.

He had a hat on and was dressed in black, and had a red jacket as well, and a colorful striped woolen blanket on the ground.

On a photo I have, there is a sign that says that "Buon appetito & Cooke's" cafe and restaurants are around the corner. I don't see the sign of the actual restaurant he was playing in front of.

Does anyone know who this might be? Does he still play? Or the what the restaurant was where he was playing?

We'd like to know because he was our best memory of Galway, and we have a lousy recording of him playing something that we'd like to identify, and we'd like to identify him as well just so we know who he was.

Thanks for your help or ideas.

Greetings from
Christina, Bratislava

Galway Local people interested in helping out student photographers . . .
Posted: Thu May 31, 2007 12:14 AM UTC
Hello all,

My name is Nicholas Draney and I am a 25 year old photojournalism student at Brooks Institute of Photography in Ventura, Ca, U.S. I am coming to Ireland in Sept./Oct. of this year with a group of 15 students who will be covering, for five weeks, stories about or on the people or the culture of Ireland. We will be spending the first week or so in Galway, where we will be covering a group project. After which, all of the students will go their separate ways to cover their separate stories for the remaining time in Ireland. The end result of the trip will be a culmination of all of our projects into an Audio/Visual show at a theater here in Ventura and Santa Barbara, as well as the production of a Book and DVD for sale. We are still in the early stages of our planning and many of us are still in the first stages of research. We all want to do a superb job so we can come away with a quality product accurately reflecting different aspects of Ireland. If anyone out there has any tips or advice on Galway or the country itself, please do not hesitate to contact me as I would greatly appreciate any knowledge or foresight into this project. Thank you!!

Galway best transport London to Galway (cost/time)
Posted: Tue May 29, 2007 12:08 AM UTC
Hi, I'm heading off to Galway (from Australia) and assume I'll hit Heathrow but would like some opinions on the best way to get from there to Galway - which combination of flying, train, bus etc. I'm not looking for the absolute cheapest way (which could take a long time!) but not the most expensive either.... There is a possibility of spending a day or two in London with friends so I wouldn't necessarily have to depart from Heathrow. Thanks in advance!!

PS any Galway people who feel like telling me all the wonderful things about their city, drop me a line via VT email (-:

Galway A Guide to Pulling in Galway.............
Posted: Tue April 17, 2007 08:18 AM UTC
So who can help?

For a lads' trip (in their mid-20's) to Galway on April 26th for four days where would be good places to visit, hang out and drink.

Places where it won't feel like we're in a German susage party (i.e. a pub or bar full of men standing around sipping their pint of Spitfire ready to pounce on the sight of any fillie that happens to wonder in).

Im trying to find a house or apartment for rent on the week of the Galway Races this summer. (week of the 5th of August). The bigger the better, but if it could sleep 6 that would be great.

Galway beds for St. patrick
Posted: Mon March 12, 2007 09:53 AM UTC
Hi.
Me and my girlfriend are going to be in Ireland on 14th. We were planning to spend the first 2 days in Clifden and 16th and 17th in Galway, than we will move towards south, but we haven't ooked anything. We are in lack of money and I need to know a few places where to sleep which could cost no more than 20€ per person.
I'd like to know also if it's easy finding room to rent in private houses for a couple of night in Ireland.
Thanks for the answer and have a nice day.
