Hi everyone,
Please help! 2 very close friends and their children need to spend several weeks in Sevenoaks as a member of their family is very ill and this will probably be their last time together. They live abroad and will be leaving on 29th evening, so this is short notice. They need self-catering accomodation, thus 2 adults and 2 children aged 4 and 3. No smoking. Preferably 2 bedrooms. Must be in Sevenoaks as they want to be as close to family as possible. B&B isn't going to work (would be fine for a weekend but not for a month). Please, any suggestions and if poss websites or phone numbers and brief descriptions. Apartment, cottages etc would be fine. Prices where possible. If anyone could reply by e-mail before 29th June to bamboo at eastnet dot com dot cn Thank you all so much. |

| Dover | Tour of Kent, including Canterbury and Dover, from Dover Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 07:37 PM UTC
We will be arriving by cruise ship in Dover at the end of July and have about 10 hours (on a Thursday) to tour Kent, focusing on Dover, Canterbury and vicinity. Is there a commerical tour avilable that provides such a tour within our time frame? If not, we'll rent a car and do it on our own in which case suggestions on the sights to see (mostly historical) and travel route will be most welcome.
Thanks for the help. |

| Kent | Leeds Castle and Dover Castle. Need advice on time. Posted: Fri March 14, 2008 07:01 PM UTC
We're planning a trip to England in July (two adults, two teens). Four nights in London and three nights in Warwick. I want to plan a day trip to see Dover Castle and Leeds Castle, but I'm wondering if it's too much to take both castles in all one day? Would it be better to see Dover in one day (and take in the Cliff's) and see Leeds Castle on the way out of London (renting a car in Maidstone)?
I might be over thinking this. I'm just trying to balance out our sightseeing 'must see's' with enjoying the sight's at own pace versus a whirlwind of mega-squeezing things in (which I know my kids would hate). Leaving London, I'm not sure if we should rent a car in Maidstone ( with the thought of going to LeedsC.) or closer to were we'll be staying in Warwick. Any advice would be great and much appreciated. Thanks, Lori |

| Dover | To Dover from Paris Posted: Mon March 3, 2008 05:00 PM UTC
We are planning on travelling in the late summer and since we have never visited Europe, outside of London, plan on flying in to Paris for a quick look-around and head to Dover later that day. We want to spend one night there and take a cruise starting the next day via Iceland and Eastern Canada ending up in New York. Does the Eurorail from Paris stop before it gets to London? Is there a train to get us back out to Dover once we end up in London? My preference would be to disembark at Calais and take surface transportation to Dover. Is that possible? Thanks very much - in anticipation.

| Kent | Bus to Ightham Mote Posted: Fri February 22, 2008 03:31 PM UTC
I will be in London the first weekend in October and am planning a day trip into
Kent to see Ightham Mote now that it has been renovated by the National Trust. I am thinking of taking the Autocar 222 bus from Borough Green to Tonbridge, getting off as close as possible to Ivy Hatch, from where I would walk to Ightham Mote. The two bus stops that look possible to me are Back Lane at Ivy Hatch and Plaxtol Church. To judge from the map, Back Lane looks slightly closer to Ightham Mote by road but which would be the better stop for walking to Ightham Mote, possibly using local paths, or should I choose a different bus? I use public transportation whenever possible. Thank you. |

We will be ending a cruise in Dover and would like to see Dover and Cantebury before going on to London. Is there a train that we can get that goes to Cantebury and back to Dover the same day? What is the average cost of a train round trip to Cantebury? Can we just book tickets when we get there?
Thanks for the info |

| Dover | Transportation to Dover Castle from Cruise Ship Posted: Mon February 4, 2008 01:29 PM UTC
We will be on a cruise ship, visiting Dover for one day -- a Friday in April. We would like to see Dover Castle on our own that day; the cruise ship does not offer its own excursion/transportation. We are in our early 40s and generally good health for walking. Question: how far of a walk would it be from the cruise ship to the castle? What other transportation methods are available to get from the cruise ship to Dover Castle? I'm also looking for street maps of Dover, including the castle and nearby town, to find our way around and not get lost getting back from the castle to the ship.
Thanks, Lynda |

| Dover | Heathrow to Dover Posted: Thu January 31, 2008 03:44 PM UTC
We will be arriving Heathrow and taking a cruise out of Port of Dover (terminal 2) I am assuming that train is the best means of transportation, however, what are the station points called? According to my information it is Dover Pier to Central London - Victoria or Charing Cross Stations, but I can't find these listed in the options.
Thanks for your help. |

Hello, I will be travelling to Folkestone on May 18th of this year and will be staying for about 2 weeks. I'm from the states and I have never been to this town before. My question is.. What is the best way to get from Heathrow airport to folkestone? Also, Is the new Shopping center built? I have been doing some reading and can't realley tell if it actually is finished. Actually, any information anyone can give me about the town would be great and realley appreaciated. We are mainley useing it as a base to take of for a lot of day trips. My grandmother grew up nearby and wanted to come look at all the places of her youth. Thanks :) Kirsten

We just bought a house on East Cliff in Folkestone. We don't know much about the town, but the view of the house is lovely, we got carried away before thinking of what we can do with it. Is holiday let common in Folkestone? Are these many tourists visiting Folkestone these days? Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks!

| Canterbury | Suggestions for a scenic drive to Canterbury Posted: Fri April 20, 2007 10:23 AM UTC
Hello
I will be visiting Canterbury shortly and will be arriving at Dover around 11:00. As I am staying around Canterbury I wanted to know if there was a nice scenic drive from Dover to Canterbury which may take 2-3 hours perhaps taking in some of the coast. I don't mind going out of my way if there are any nice little towns to see. I will be driving on a Sunday and would also like to stop off at a little pub for a traditional lunch if anyone can suggest a children friendly place. Thank you for help. Dave |

| Canterbury | Canterbury experts -- Rail and bus advice please! Posted: Thu April 5, 2007 04:59 PM UTC
Hello everyone! First post.
My family and I will be flying from the US in late September for an approximately 10-day stay in England. We have chosen to go the self-catering route and to make our "base" for travel in an apartment that is literally across the street from the West rail station in Canterbury (we have stayed in Ashford before). We intend to use the rail and bus services for our sightseeing tours to places such as Dover, Leeds Castle, Tenterden, etc., and for several day trips to London. We are unsure, as yet, of how many days we will actually be traveling by bus/rail, but I know we will be doing a lot of this kind of travel -- possibly as much as 10 days traveling by bus and rail. The total party will consist of four adults (one is a senior) and one 6-year-old child. The choices of multi-day rail passes are bewildering ... can any of you help in suggesting the best multi-day bus, rail and Underground tickets for the price? Are there any multi-day passes that combine any of these services? (Since we'll all be traveling together, it's OK if the suggestions are for multi-party passes.) Also (full of questions, here, yes), am I correct in assuming that most of the rail service in and around the southeast is second class, so no need to spring the extra money for first-class rail passes? (What is the difference between first and second class, anyway?) As for the arrival trip to Canterbury from Heathrow, I'm assuming we can hop on the Heathrow Express train to London, change trains in London, and take the Southeastern line to Canterbury West station via Ashford International. Is there any restriction to taking airline luggage on local trains? I'd hate to have to pay cab fare for that journey. (When we were last in the UK, I remember purchasing a one-day rail card at Ashford International that paid for all rail and Underground passage for one day -- and it wasn't expensive. Do they still offer things like that?) This will be my second time in the UK, and the first time we had hosts (via a sister city relationship with Ashford) who drove us everywhere we wanted to go in their personal cars. This time we want a little freedom to do what we want, when we want to -- hence the decision to rely on trains & buses without the hassle and worry of renting a car. Good idea? Bad idea? Suggestions? I await your expertise! |
