| Porto | Best way to get To and From Porto? Posted: Tue May 1, 2007 09:26 PM UTC
My husband and I will be participating in an English immersion program in La Alberca (a lovely place) for the 2nd time this September. After that, we need to get from La Alberca to Porto for a Douro River cruise. We have a few over 48 hours to do this.
From the train maps, it appears there is a path, through Salamanca to Coimbra to Porto. Would that be the best way to go or should we try one/more bus rides or even a rental car? One challenge: my husband travels with a Segway (www.segway.com) to help him get around. Method of transport needs to accommodate it. We have flown with it to/from Madrid and other places and he's used it in La Alberca on the cobblestones and in parks on groomed trails. After the cruise, we will need to get back to Madrid to catch a flight back to the U.S. I saw some ideas on that here, more? So the itinerary would be either: Detroit - Madrid - La Alberca - Avila/Salamanca - Porto - Madrid - Detroit OR Detroit - Porto - ?? La Alberca ?? - Porto - Detroit MTIA |

| Porto | Porto to Lisbon by bus Posted: Sat April 28, 2007 02:56 PM UTC
I'll be in Portugal for a few days in June and I want to travel from Porto to Lisbon...can you tell me which is the departing point for REDE buses/expressos in Porto and which is the arriving station in Lisbon? are the buses for Lisbon departing from Porto Campanha as the trains or they have a different station? also, if there are more than one stops in Lisbon, can you tell me which one is the best for city centre ?(namely anywhere near Marques de Pombal)...I couldn't find this info on the bus company website...thanks

| Porto | car seats + other suggestions Posted: Fri April 20, 2007 08:20 AM UTC
we are travelling to Porto in a week with kids and we have booked car with one baby seat. My other kid, age of 6 will also need a car seat. I think it's too expensive to rent it (50 EUR), so we were thinking of bringing it along. Where it is possible to buy that kind of equipment in POrto and how much it costs? Simply seat or rack. Where we live, we can buy them in supermarket at about 20 EUR. Any suggestions will be appreciated!
Another question - we are planning on taking a boat tour (6 bridges cruise), do you think we could also participate in a wine tasting? Is it reasonable to buy cruise + visit to wine cellars or visit wione cellars separately? |

| Porto | Porto in May Posted: Thu April 12, 2007 05:34 PM UTC
I'll be in Porto with family May 15-17. I've barely started looking at all I can do while I'm there, but am wondering if there is an online calendar of events that I might want to check out? Also, are there any locals or fellow travelers that would like to meet up during that time? Thanks for your time :)

| Porto | Two nights in Porto in late Summer Posted: Sat April 7, 2007 09:53 AM UTC
...as a side trip from Lisbon (by train most likely), our first time in Portugal.
We're planning on staying at the Mercure Porto Batalha (though nothing is booked yet, so if you have better ideas, feel free to suggest them!). Is the location good? Any general recommendations for the 'must sees' that we can fit in the short time we are there? What are the best 2 or so wine lodges we should visit? Thanks for the help and any other general tips you may have for us! |

| Porto | Vineyard tours in the douro valley, departing from Porto? Posted: Sat April 7, 2007 09:28 AM UTC
I was hoping to be able to go on a tour of a vineyard somewhere in the nearby Douro Valley, using Porto as a departure point. A half-day trip or something like that would be ideal.
Are there tours, bus tours or something maybe, that depart from Porto for this, or maybe a bus or train we could take to some nearby place that would offer this? I've seen some gorgeous pictures of the Douro area with its many vineyards and I thought it would be really cool to check it out. We're planning on only 2 nights in Porto. |

| Porto | Best area(s) to live in Porto Posted: Tue February 27, 2007 07:44 PM UTC
Most of the information on this site refers to short-term visits. However, I will be staying in Porto for 7 months later this year, with my wife. We would like tips on the best places to live in Porto - lively safe friendly neighbourhood, lots of restaurants, 'high street' shops, public transport, etc. We are leaning towards Foz, Matosinhos, etc, but don't really know these areas.

| Porto | 3 nights in Porto - good value accommodation, please?! Posted: Thu February 22, 2007 07:58 AM UTC
I am planning a 3 night stay in Porto at the end of June, for my friends 50th birthday and want to know of somewhere conveneint for the bars and restaurants in the evening (probably ribeira?) but do not want to pay too much (up to about 60 euros per night per double room) - clean but not necessarily luxurious! 2* or 3 * will be fine, if someone can recommend something personally.
Does anyone know of anywhere? I quite like the look of the Grand Hotel de Paris, but don't know how far this is from the reatuarants - would like somewhere in the heart of things, so we don't have to get a bus or walk too far at night. |

| Porto | Rio Douro Cruises Posted: Sat February 17, 2007 08:26 PM UTC
I read that you highly recommended the cruise down the Rio Douro. Please tell me all that you can about it - how long is the ride, how much does it cost, etc. I read some negative postings about it, so any info you provide will be most helpful. A friend of mine told me he went on a cruise that lasted 4 hours and included lunch. Please help!

| Porto | Porto/Fatima to Santiago de Compostela Posted: Mon September 25, 2006 10:45 AM UTC
Dear Friends! I need your advice how to get from Porto (actually Fatima) to Santiago de Compostela in a guickest way. I found at http://www.cp.pt/ that there is a suitable train from Fatima to Valenca (8:19 - 14:28, 12:46 - 18:21) but I am not sure how to get to SdC from Valenca. This is probably regional feature of railway sites.
Any other oportunities with travel by bus or train overnight from Fatima, Porto or Salamanca? Thanks. Yuri. |

| Porto | Carlos Gois of Sandeman, Oporto Posted: Thu September 7, 2006 07:22 AM UTC
Please advise if a gentleman called Carlos Gois works, still, at the Sandeman 'caves' in Oporto?
We are returning to Portugal on a sentimental journey, having been there in 1975, and wish to make contact with Carlos. At that time he worked for Sandeman wines and hosted our tour of the city. He was married to Dina, whom we also met and they had a baby who might now have made Carlos and Dina grandparents! Who knows. We'd love to find out. Regards - Barbara and Gregory McOmish (Saudi Arabia). |
