Hiking/Backpacking Posted: Tue October 27, 2009 10:32 PM UTC
Anyone who has done either of the above in Jamaica, I would love to hear your experiences. I'm planning a trip in summer 2010. Are the trails easy to navigate? What are the best maps for the area? Any country-specific dangers to hikers (besides the obvious--animal, and disease)? And anything else you think would be helpfull in planning my trip....Thanks!

When to book for the best prices for New Years Posted: Thu October 15, 2009 03:33 PM UTC
Planning a vacation to Jamaica or Dominican Republic for New Years. The prices are really high just wondering if anyone knows from experiencing searching day to day... from booking early or waiting for better deals since resorts may notice they are not booking enough rooms. all inclusive is the way we would like to go.or even if thereis another hidden place that is as nice we would appreciate any advice...

I am returning to the Sandals Royal Carib resort in Montego Bay after 6 yrs. The private island used to have a clothing optional beach on it. Is that still the case?

Cheap transportation from Negril to Kingston Posted: Wed October 14, 2009 06:28 PM UTC
Hello everyone,
I'm planing on a trip to Jamaica in February 2010.
Our idea is to fly to Montego Bay, take a bus to a hostel (Carribbean Sunset Resort) in Negril and go from Negril to Kingston, and fly back home from Kingston (we are couchsurfing in Kingston).
We are 2 students and want to keep the trip as cheap as possible.
I found a bus operating between Montego Bay Airport and Negril (http://www.jamaica-tour.com/ground-transportation.htm#Montego_Bay), wondering if that's a good idea?
Any suggestions for the bus between Kingston (somewhere in the center) and Kingston aiport?
And the most difficult part, a bus service between Negril and Kingston under 100 $ per person? Or even cheaper, I read about the route taxis, but I'm not sure if they go on such long distances or how it works exactly....I know that it's a 6-8 hours trip or similar, but we don't really care because we would just spend one day on travelling.
I'm thankful for any ideas, tips, warnings or experiences.

Cheap accommodation in Montego Bay North area??? Posted: Thu October 8, 2009 05:28 PM UTC
Hi! I'm off to Jamaica for the first time in November, landing in Kingston then free to go anyway... ideally i'd like to meet up with some friends in Montego Bay North area... so.... seriously is there any decent cheap accommodation option? I'm struggling to find something at the moment.
I know KIN is far from Mo Bay and was looking for somewhere a bit less touristy yet nice but at least if I can spend some time with them there in mo bay it'd be good.
Looking for tips and advice on accommodation and travel there on a tight budget!!
Thanks in advance

Going to Ocho Rios in December - Couple Tower Isle Posted: Thu September 24, 2009 01:36 PM UTC
Is the Couples Tower Isle the same as what used to be Couples Ochos Rios? All adult resort with island about 150 yards off beach? Anyone been there since the renovation? It was the oldest all inclusive in Jamaica, I wonder how the renovation was? We truely enjoyed our stay there before. I hope the new management is as good. Please advise. Best regards, Doug

North coast or south coast for diving Posted: Mon August 24, 2009 08:23 PM UTC
I'm thinking about going to Jamaica for 2 or maximum 3 weeks this winter.
There are organized round trips as I know for about 5 days.
The rest of the time I want to go diving or take a hike tour through the blue mountains or maybe somewhere else where it is beautiful. Ok, I will also relax and drink a rum.
It is better to go to the north coast for diving ?
Does somebody know agencies for hiking tours ?
Best month (Best weather, Diving, Hiking, Round trip) or cheapest month between november and march ?

Spending Jamaican$ vs. US$ Posted: Wed August 5, 2009 04:55 PM UTC
Hi all, we are newbies. We are departing on Fri, Aug7 and have converted US$ to J$. Now I am concerned we took waaay too much J$.
What would be a good start guideline for "haggleing" on:
Taxi rate?
Souvenier rate?_t-shirts, street art, towels, etc.
Tour guide?- cane raft cruise down one of the rivers...
Really looking for a base guideline for pricing. Just want to be fair to the locals as well.
Please state US or J$ when referring.
Thanks a bunch,C

Tips for a nice week in August! Posted: Mon July 20, 2009 02:05 PM UTC
Hello I'm considering a week in Jamaica 9-16 August 2009 in Bahia Prince resort.
Hopefully not to be hit by a hurricane! If I'm reading reviews correctly, it will rain but hopefully for an hour or so and then it clears up. Is it very disrruptive for activities? Let say if we buy a day tour to the falls, to the Dolphins, etc
What are the best tours available. I didn't find many reviwes about prices and options. Although I 'm under the impression that tours are quite expensive.
I read that Dolphins cove is nearby the falls so I'd like to combine that two, as I would expect that doing it on different days would be more expensive, no?
I think I would also like to do rafting on Martha river + a visite to Montego bay.
I'm sure my tour operator will give me a list of day trips when arriving, but I'd like to know if on the resort I'd have more companies to chosse from and which one do you recommend.
Does anyone know how much do they charge at Bahia Prince to use internet per hour - I don't mean connecting my laptop, but going to a common room and use their computers.
Do European mobile phones work or do we need to rent a local mobile phone?
I've read about Mosquitos... is it very severe? or we are just fine if we put some repelent on?
Would love to hearing from your experiences!
Txs

Sandles, Ocho Rios Posted: Sat April 25, 2009 12:59 AM UTC
Hi, Going in 7-09 and very confused over the locations of all the rooms. Don't want one with a private pool but the more reasonable are Rivera and Great House. Has anyone stayed at one of these. What location is better. Is it worth the extra $500 to get a different room. The place is so big I have no idea if front by lobby , ocean or middle where the Great house is? Is it walking distance if yu take shuttle to the river resort and then go to the Dan Rivers from there? How is the food . Any informaton would be helpful.

Montego Bay and Beyond Posted: Wed April 15, 2009 10:34 PM UTC
Hello!
I will be in Montego Bay on business next month, with about four days of free time. I really want to do some hiking and have a more adventurous visit than just sitting around a resort all day and hanging out with tourists. Is there another area I can go to that is close by, easy to get to and safe for female travelers? Does anyone recommend Ocho Rios? Or better to stay put in Montego Bay and maybe take day trips?
As always, thank you fellow VT-ers for your help and advice.

Strawberry Hill / Blue Mountains Posted: Mon March 30, 2009 04:03 AM UTC
Hello - My girlfriend and I are considering spending some time at Strawberry Hill in the Blue Mountains in July. Can anyone give us an idea about the surrounding area? Is there access to food/services other than the hotel? Right now we are not planning on renting a car. Is this area too isolated to be without our own transportation and without getting the all-inclusive? Thanks for any help!

Female Travelling Alone Posted: Thu March 19, 2009 08:00 PM UTC
I have just booked my holiday at the Royal Decameron at Montego Bay for April 17. I am used to travelling alone because I can't sit and wait on people who do not want to invest money in their vacations. Yesterday a friend told me that I will not be in Cuba or Mexico and that I must not leave the resort alone. Afterall, I can't expect anybody to become an overnight friend, this does not usually happen. Is it that dangerous? I am now having second thoughts about why I decided to go to Jamaica. I am not the sit on the beach all week type of person. What are your thoughts about Montego Bay for single women travelling alone?

Driving in Jamaica Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 02:47 AM UTC
What is it like driving in Jamaica? Is it as bad as some sources make it out to be? We are traveling for a week and want to rent a car so we can get out around the island and see more and have that independence. Is it dangerous enough to advise against that? Never been to the island so any information from experienced travelers is very welcome. Thank you!

Off the Beaten Track - Ocho Rios Vicinity Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 02:36 AM UTC
I am planning a trip to Jamaica. We have 2 nights to figure out what to do, between staying our first nights in Boston Bay and ending out trip in Negril. The only thing we have as a must-do over those few days is going to Nine Mile. Any suggestions on reasonably-priced places to stay/other things to do in the area? We're renting a car and would like to do some exploring. Anything cool or different, thanks!
