volunteering in Roatan Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 10:05 PM UTC
Hello all,
I am planning on volunteering in Honduras in about a year and a half and just doing some research into some organizations. I've found Familias Saludables in Coxen Hole and Clinica Esperanza in Sandy Bay. Has anyone heard of either of these, or even volunteered with either? If so what were your experiences? And if you've heard of them, do they have good reputations??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dinghys and non-traditional dive sites Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 06:58 PM UTC
Hi! Two quick questions. Your ideas and recommendations greatly appreciated.
1. Does anyone know where on Roatan we might rent a Hobie Cat or Laser (small personal sailboat) for an hour or two? We're not staying at a resort. And we have transportation to get us to wherever we need to go on the island.
2. Which dive shop offers not-the-usual-tourist dive sites? My partner is very advanced and he's looking for something different.
Thanks for your two bits! Have a great day.

Did you use your kitchen at Mayan Princess? Was it easy to go grocery shopping? Would you prefer Mayan Princess & cooking versus All-Inclusive.

food and water safety Posted: Mon February 25, 2008 01:48 PM UTC
Hi!
Will be traveling to Roatan for the Easter weekend and staying for 7 days.
There will be 2 young children and an elderly female with the group, my question is... how is the food and water safety on the island? If we can only drink bottled water, how can we be sure the food is safe? Hate the way the question sounds, but have to make sure the kids and grandma are safe from any possible stomach bacteria.
thank you so much for any help or advise

Where to stay? Posted: Thu March 29, 2007 04:20 PM UTC
My Husband and I, both divers, are planning on a trip to Roatan in late Nov, 2007. I've been looking at Inn of Last Resort and Reef House. I know they are both two different kinds of set ups with Reef Hse having everything there. My Husband likes the idea of a more quiet place and I prefer more access to the town. One of things that I'm wondering about is which dive shop in town would be one of the better ones to dive with if we stay at LR and do any of the West end dive shops make regular dive stops on the Leeward side of the island? I've read that the reefs there are in better condition.
Anyone care to weigh in? Any thoughts, ideas or experiences would be greatly appreciated!!

NEED HELP PLEASE! NEW SOUVENIRS & TOURS GIFT SHOP (NEED PHONE#) Posted: Wed February 14, 2007 06:39 PM UTC
Hello,
Can somebody help me please? I'm desperately looking for the phone# of store named, "NEW SOUVENIRS & TOURS GIFT SHOP" (in front of H.B. Warren Market on Coxen Hole). We've looked at the yellow pages, but it wasn't listed. We desperately need to get a hold of a lady that sells the crafts there.
Anybody have any suggestion as to what to do? BTW, we contacted HB Warren Market if they could give the message to the store in question, but they refused.
Thanks a lot.

Roatan 1 week - Guatemala 2 weeks! Posted: Wed November 29, 2006 02:41 AM UTC
My GF and I are flying into San Pedro Sula (Honduras) on New years eve for a 3 week trip in CM. We will be travelling out to Roatan first off, for a week of diving. Which is as far as we have set in concrete so far. Any words of wisdom on the following would be greatly appreciated;
1. Having not yet got accomodation on Roatan and the fact that alot of budget places do not take reservations, whats our best bet for ensuring we wont have to sleep on the beach? Or will we be fine just turning up to the west end and getting good budget accom, even at that time of year?
2. For the remaining 2 weeks we would like to see Guatamela, and therefore looking for some good routes to take in; Tikal, Rio Dulce, Livingston, Coban, Antigua, Lake De Atitlan and the rest of the highlands (not in that particular order). Any Itinerary suggestions?
Gracias

Ferry to Utila Posted: Wed June 28, 2006 10:46 PM UTC
Hi
Does anyone know if there are 2 ferry crossings a day from La Ceiba to Utila? Also, is it true that there are only connecting flights 3 times a week to Utila from San Pedro Sula? We thought there were flights every day, now we need to take a bus then ferry to Utila. Any recent travelers experience would be appreciated! Thanks.

Which One do you Choose? Posted: Fri May 19, 2006 11:01 PM UTC
We want to go to Roatan for a week. I have picked out 3 resorts but can't decide between them. Which of the following resorts you would choose to stay at?
Coco View Resort, Inn of Last Resort or the Reef Resort.
Hehehehe, the pressures on. Whichever of these resorts receive the most votes, that's where I'm booking! :-)

Need new Roatan Info Posted: Thu April 27, 2006 02:07 AM UTC
We are planning a trip to Roatan in August 2006. Renting a house on the beach in Sandy Beach area. How are the beaches/sand fly situation? I have a friend who is thinking about NOT joining us becasue she read the sand flys are bad and the photos that she sees have empty beaches. Yes, she may be crazy, but I just wanted to check. Also, any good restaurant ideas? Thanks, Debra

Cruise in October Posted: Sat April 1, 2006 01:13 AM UTC
My sister and I are going on a 7 day cruise in October and one of the places that we will be going to is Isla Roatan. We are very excited about it, one of the things that we hope to do is go scuba or snorkling. We have never done that before, I am a little nervous about seeing sharks appearing, are there sharks there and am I worried for nothing. Any other tips on cruises would help me ease my fears.
Thanks

Cruise ship Shore Excursions Posted: Sun August 7, 2005 05:19 PM UTC
I have already posted this question under the "Caribbean" forum, but thought I should narrow it down to the actual city or Island.
We are in Roatan for 1 day only. What is the best thing to do there and something we should not miss?
Thank you,
Carol.

Accommodation and diving in Roatan Posted: Sun June 5, 2005 05:53 PM UTC
Hey there
We will be heading to Roatan next wk and looking for a place to stay and to do some diving. Everyone seems to point to Anthonys Key Resort, however, it is quite a bit over our budget. Does anyone have any other suggestions, one of us hopes to a PADI course.
Many thanks

Dreaded Cruise--Can I hire private tourguide in Port?? Posted: Thu May 5, 2005 02:25 PM UTC
In early August, I will take a family cruise for the first time. We will stop in Grand Cayman, Belize, Roatan ( Honduras), and Cozumel. Of course, the ship offers shore excursions, but I would prefer a local guide if possible ( and if prudent). I realize it is in the cruise line's best interest to scare passengers from taking anything but ship-sponsored tours, but I am also well aware of the local economics and would prefer to employ a private individual or company for excursions. Can anyone out there give me any tips or advice on such things?...or tips on must-see, must-do, must buy, or stay-away-from things? Thanks for any help or referrals you can offer.
