Madrid One day and a night in Madrid as a start
Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 04:24 AM UTC
Aloha,

I'm travelling to Granada for about 3 weeks. I'll stay in Madrid next Saturday and I'd like to get some tips on where to stay (nice hostel would do)and what's a must see/do in one day. (I've read all the replies to Susumarie, so now I also know about the museums, free concerts etc...-thanks for that)

Hopefully on the way back I'll have some more time for Madrid.

Thank you very much for your help in advance!
Have a nice Friday, Gabriella

Madrid Time to be at train station?
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 09:35 PM UTC
After seeing other posts here, wondering what is the necessary lead time to arrive at the train station? We will be leaving on the 9 pm AVE out of Atocha, and do want to make the most of that last day -- what is a safe time to be there no later than?

Madrid Where to stay to be close???
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 09:03 PM UTC
HELP! I am working on a trip to Spain, first stop being Madrid. We are starting at the airport there and will be leaving from the Atocha train station. I am trying to pick an appropriate hotel that will be in a good area, central to main spots to visit and/or bus stops, and closer to the train station, as we will be trying to make the most of our time there, then rushing for the train to leave town in the evening.
I get VERY confused when the hotel descriptions start talking about "north Madrid", "central", etc. Please help direct me to the section (we don't name our cities in sections so much) I want to stay in. In Sevilla, I found maps that showed the things I wanted to hit, plus the train station, so it made it nice trying to land. Can't seem to find such for Madrid!

Madrid Madrid at Christmas
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 11:36 AM UTC
We will be visiting Spain at Christmas time. We are flying into Madrid on the 24th December and have to check into our resort in Marbella on the 25th. Should we stay in Madrid or travel down to the coast. Will gas stations be open on the 25th. Any advice would be helpful. I'm thinking to stay in Madrid on the 24 and then drive on the 25th.

Madrid Studying Abroad in Spain
Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 06:12 AM UTC
I am a full-time undergrad and will be studying in Cordoba this Fall with a flight arriving in Madrid. My plan is to take a taxi from the airport and then take a bus to Cordoba in the morning. I am 22 but have an unhealthily overprotective father who thinks my luggage will get snatched if I walk down the street to hail a taxi. How can I assure him that I will be safe? Also, what is the nearest/cheapest youth hostel near MAD? And a third question, what is the likelihood of luggage getting stolen on a long bus ride from Madrid to Cordoba?

Thank you!!

Madrid From and to Parque Warner
Posted: Tue June 30, 2009 01:00 PM UTC
Hello!

I'm going to Madrid just to visit Warner Parque this time, I've a early flight and then a late flight from Barajas on the same day.

I'm looking from some advices in how to reach and then return from Warner Parque to the Barajas Airport.

I thought of renting a car if there are any low cost car rentals in Madrid. I'm not going alone so that could even be cheaper then that metro and train.

Thank You

Madrid Directions from Plaza Espanya to Plaza Eliptica
Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 10:47 PM UTC
Nomad referred me to the link for the metro de Madrid but I was unable to find a route to take me from Plaza Espanya to Plaza Eliptica. Is it not possible to travel this route by metro. I am taking a bus to Toledo for a few days and the point of departure is listed as Plaza Eliptica (which looks to me like a metro station as well as a bus depot on the map)

Madrid From Madrid to Bordeaux... car? train? plane?
Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 07:03 PM UTC
Hi! We're a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 under 12) and we'll be arriving in Madrid, and trying to get to Bordeaux this summer. I'm hesitating between going with Renfe (which is long, and not that cheap) and renting a car (not cheap either because of the one-way drop fee)... Yet another option is to fly to Toulouse with easy jet (that's somewhat cheap) then take a train from toulouse to bordeaux...

Two questions:
- Are there good reductions for kids on Renfe/sncf all the way to bordeaux? I've seen 40% off for under 12 on renfe, but I'm wondering if this will be valid between irun and bordeaux as this will no longer be the spanish train network.
- Do you guys know of any low-cost car rental places that would accept one-way trips?

Thanks for any info! :)

Madrid Madrid Card/Tourist Travel Pass?
Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 09:02 AM UTC
I will be in Madrid for one full week (including 1-day trips to Toledo, Segovia and perhaps Avila).

Am debating purchasing either the Madrid Card or the Tourist Travel Pass or both?
Despite the online discount the Madrid card for 48 hours, for instance, seems expensive...

The Tourist Travel card otoh is reasonable, a 5 day pass is only Euro 17.60 within Zone A. Zone T is double the price. Which am I likely, as a tourist, to find more useable?

Or is there something better, like the Barcelona T-10 for instance?

Your suggestions and recommendations most welcome!

Madrid Cochinillo at Botin

How do I place an order for cochinillo from Botin's, to have it FedExed to me overnight? Here near Memphis we routinely send ribs that way, and I have received a Sachertorte overnight, so I know it can be done.

Loved my one evening at Botin 35 years ago. I'm trying to plan a trip back, but in the meantime ...

Madrid Parroquia De Santa Monica
Posted: Thu May 21, 2009 04:46 PM UTC
Hello,

I was baptized in Parroquia De Santa Monica in Madrid over 20 years ago. I need a current copy of my Baptismal Certificate to get married here, in Canada. I've tried calling the parish, with no luck. Maybe I don't have the correct phone number.

I don't have any friends or relatives that live in the area, anymore.

Does anyone know what I can do? Besides going Spain :)

Thanks!

Madrid Madrid to Bilbao
Posted: Tue May 19, 2009 09:34 PM UTC
Hi, any help appreciated on this (I'm getting lots of out of date/closed websites etc)-Also I've not got the time at the moment to 'Research' this myself, so hoping someone can help me with my question, or sections of my trip.

I arrive in Madrid 25th July, and need to be in Bilbao by early afternoon of 26th - flights are quickest, but at moment are $194 o/w!
I understand bus is about 4 hours and train is around 6, and that the bus is cheaper.

I'm intending to travel from Bilbao to Seville (28th),then need to be in Benidorm (30th), Valladolid (1st Aug), Santiago de Compostela (2nd), then back to Madrid - fly home 4th August).

Is it possible to purchase a discount ticket for multi journeys on the bus/train. Are some of these journeys better by bus or train or no difference ie time/price/ distance from town centre.
I'm on a bit of a budget, but for some of these journeys, time and distance might be the deciding factor.

I'm very grateful for any input - (and I'll acknowledge your reply!).

Best Wishes,
Sue x

Madrid Europe Trip; A Request for Expert Opinion
Posted: Tue May 19, 2009 01:18 PM UTC
We are a group of 6 friends (Age: 26-29) visiting, or dashing actually, Europe in June 2009. Below is our near-to-final itinerary for expert opinion:

Day 1 (Monday, June 8): Arrival at Rome Fiumicino at 18:30; Checking in at Hostel Pop-Inn at around 22:00 for two nights.

Day 2 (Tuesday, June 9): Walking tour to Colosseum, Pantheon, Forum, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps in the first half. Then go for window shopping at any good mall (please recommend) and visit to Ferrari Store (please advise).

Day 3 (Wednesday, June 10): Visiting Vatican City and Museum in the first half through public transport (Thanks to VT, I understand that Wednesday is the recommended day to visit Vatican). Leave for Florence in the second half through Regional Train and checking in at Locanda Rocco for two nights.

Day 4 (Thursday, June 11): Half day trip to Pisa from Florence and back through Regional Train. Visit one of the museums and wandering around in the other half.

Day 5 (Friday, June 12): Leave for Venice in the first half through Regional Train. Spend evening and night at Venice.

Day 6 (Saturday, June 13): Leave for Bari in the morning through Adriatica. Take 20:00 superfast ferry to Patras.

Day 7 (Sunday, June 14): Reach Patras at Noon. Leave for Athens and check-in at a reasonable hostel for two nights. Visit National Archeological Museum.

Day 8 (Monday, June 15): Day trip to a nearby beach.

Day 9 (Tuesday, June 16): Visit Acropolis and other sites in the first half. Leave for Barcelona in the second half through low-cost airline (clickair: pre-booked). Over night stay at Barcelona.

Day 10 (Wednesday, June 17): Spend first half in Barcelona and leave for Granada in the second half. Check-in at a reasonable hostel for two nights.

Day 11 (Thursday, June 18): Visit Alhambra and explore Granada.

Day 12 (Friday, June 19): Leave for Cordoba early in the morning and visit Mazquita. Leave for Madrid in the evening. Check-in at a reasonable hostel for two nights.

Day 13 (Saturday, June 20): Explore Madrid.

Day 14 (Sunday, June 21): Leave for the next destination/ back home in the second half.

Question # 1: Reference to Day 1 above, what is the cheapest mode of transportation from Fiumicino to Termini and what time we would be able to reach our hostel (by foot from Termini) considering the international arrival at Fiumicino at 18:30 and with luggage?

Question # 2: Reference to Day 2; I understand that there is a Combo Ticket for Colosseum, Pantheon, and Forum in 12 Euros. Does this also cover Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps?

Question # 3: Reference to Day 3, how feasible is to have a motorbike tour to Vatican from Termini and back?

Question # 4: Reference to Day 4, please advice which half to allocate to Florence and which half to Pisa?

Question # 5: Reference to Day 5, can we wander around Venice for the whole night? What are the pros and cons?

Question # 6: Reference to Day 6 and 7, I understand\ that there are some areas not recommended for overnight stay because of security and Red Light thing. Then, which other areas provide for cheap and safer accommodation?

Besides specific questions, please feel free to share your experience and other useful tips.

Madrid Madrid to Toledo by Bus and Horse Racing in Madrid
Posted: Fri May 15, 2009 11:38 AM UTC
I wish to do a daytrip to Toledo from Madrid in mid July.

Do the Continental buses still run every half hour from Méndez Álvaro to Toledo?

If I purchase a 7 day Tourist Pass for Zone T will that allow me to travel on those buses, or do I need to buy another ticket?

For the week beginning 13th July Do they still have evening horserace meetings between 21:45 until 00:30 every Thursday night at La Zarzuela?

Do the free buses still run from Paseo Moret to and from the racecourse?

Do they still have the Sunday morning fixtures?

Thanks
