World's Largest Flower To Be Blooming Next Week Posted: Sat July 19, 2008 03:27 PM UTC
Not a question but an information for those who are around Baden-Württemberg next week...
The Wilhelma, the botanical garden and zoo in Stuttgart, is expecting a big event next week. The plant with the largest inflorescence in the world, the titan arum (Amorphophallis titanun), is producing a flower after 3 years of rest. This is the very same plant that broke the world record in October 2005 with a flower of 2.94 m height.
The flower will be fully open for one single hour. This is expected to happen next Wednesday, July 23 - but no one knows for sure. The Stuttgart plant has been named "La Diva" for some reason... Half-opened it's impressive enough, though.

Hi,
I’m travelling to Germany for vacation and would like to know if there’s any way that I can take the river instead of the road or train from Frankfurt to Freiburg. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Frank - Langenburg Posted: Thu June 12, 2008 11:15 PM UTC
My grandfather and great grand parents lived in Langenburg ~1875. His name was Albert Frank and his fathers name was Johann Christian Frank. I would love to visit Langenburg. Are any of the Frank family still living there? Where can I get a telephone book for Langenburg? Does Langenburg have an Internet web-page.
Thank You,
Richard Frank

Thankyou to all who helped with information on vintage motorcycles
My husband had a delay getting to Karlsruhe after being off loaded by Qantas in Singapore for 5 days a disadvantage of staff travel so his time was cut short but he has been to one or two different museums each day.
He tells me he had plenty of photos and information so thank everyone

currency use around Lake Konstanz Posted: Sun June 1, 2008 10:40 AM UTC
I shall be visitng the area, staying in Konstanz from Wednesday 4th June. Can
anyone tell me, please, whether I should take Swiss Francs as well as Euros for use whilst touring around the Lake on the Swiss side? Or, as I have experienced on the Swiss/Italian border, are the Euros accepted - mainly for use in cafes and restaurants.
Thanks,
Alan

Rental Car returns on Sunday Posted: Tue May 20, 2008 04:23 PM UTC
I was looking at rental cars from the Stuttgart train station but I wanted to return the car in a town closer to Tubingen (such as herrenberg, Plochingen, Reutlingen etc). Basically, I want to rent a car Saturday late afternoon and drop it off on Sunday afternoon. However, most rental car companies are closed on Sunday (except at the Stuttgart train station and airport). But, I am not sure if any have after hours drop off service.
In the U.S., most rental car companies have after hours drop off, does anyone know if this service is available in Germany especially at some of the towns between Stuttgart and Tubingen?

Language course in Stuttgart Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 12:26 AM UTC
A Korean friend of mine is traveling to Stuttgart around late summer this year to follow her fiance, who is German but who is also new to Stuttgart and seemingly doesn't know his way around town as yet.
Obviously, as they will be living there for quite a while she wants to learn the German language and is therefore looking for German language centers, institutes or university courses.
My question:
Does any VTer know details or can recommend any specific language program in Stuttgart? Can she study at the university without actually enrolling in studies like Germanistik? She wants to learn as fast as possible and looks for intensive courses of around six months to one year, Monday to Friday if available.
Any ideas are appreciated...
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Robert

IKEA Posted: Fri May 16, 2008 07:54 PM UTC
Hello,
A friend wants to go to Ikea in Sindelfingen or Ludwigsburg but dont know how to with public transport, can anyone help?
Sindelfingen would be a better option for her, however it seems not so possible to get to without a car.
The Ludwigsburg branch is further but when I look on the web, there seems to be 3 buses stopping just outside. Where do these buses depart from? Can she get the bus from Ludwisburg/Tamm S-Bahn Station or Stuttgart Hbf?
Can she check the bus schedule somewhere?
Thanks!

Baden-Baden Horse Races and Vineyards Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 05:12 PM UTC
We will be visiting Baden-Baden on Sunday, May 18th. There are races on this day, we have never been to the horse races and are not sure what to expect. Should we buy the tickets at the facility or make reservations? What kind of dress can we expect? We have dinner reservations at the Zum Alde Got and where hoping to do some wine tasting prior to dinner. Any recomendations for vineyards?

Hi Everyone,
I will be celebrating my 10 year anniversary in Baden-Baden, unfortunately I only have one night and want to make the most of it. We will be arriving in the early morning to partake of the Friedrichsbad spa before checking into our hotel. Problem is I haven't booked a hotel yet or made dinner reservations. I really want this to be romantic, any suggestions?
Thanks!!

lockers at the train station of Baden-Baden? Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 07:44 PM UTC
I'm arriving to Baden Airpark for the VT Euromeet 2008 in Karlsruhe (yay yay yayyyy!!)
as my plane arrives late morning on Thursday, I was thinking of spending a few hours exploring Baden-Baden. I was wondering if there are lockers at the train station of Baden-Baden for storing my bag, so I could do some sightseeing before getting to Karlsruhe
Anyone does know? Or other alternatives?
Thanks! :)

Need to find a nice place for 80th anniversary celebration Posted: Sat April 19, 2008 05:27 PM UTC
A father of my friend will be 80 in the beginning of this September. He is living in Stuttgart and will be visited by his local friends as well as by his children, grandchilren, other relatives and friends from around of the World. His daughter will organize the celebration but since she is living far away and does not speak good German she is asking for help in finding nice place for the event.
She is looking for a nice Gasthof (or Gasthause) with a nice restaurant for ca. 40 people. They also will need to book several rooms for approximately 10 guest, who would prefer to stay in the Gasthof for 3-5 days and make some sightseeing. It should be nice, picturesque place which is also easy reachable from Stuttgart by local transport since it will be hard to organize good transportation for such amount of guests.
Advices, hints and help in finding sutable place will be very highly appreciated!
