My daughter, aged 26 and I are traveling to Belize at the end of October. We want to see the Mayan ruins, go snorkeling and/or diving and see the Cockscomb Jaguar preserve. What would be the best way to do this? Any hotel suggestions and means of travel would be greatly appreciated.,

Bugs and Heat in Belize In June Posted: Wed October 14, 2009 05:59 AM UTC
Hello,
We want to spend our honeymoon in Belize in Late May early June. We are thinking of staying at what seems like a really nice place in Hopkins called the Hamanasi Resort.
We are super excited for a private and relaxing get away but are a bit scared that the bugs and the heat will get in the way. Sooo how bad is it? Arte there mosquitoes constantly buzzing in your ear? We aren't squimish but just don't like persistent bugs flying around our heads. Also we know its going to be hot in June but how hot is hot?
Thanks in advance... any advice on bugs or in general is much appreciated.

Belize City - central for belize travel? Posted: Thu October 8, 2009 10:31 PM UTC
If I want to travel to some of the Islands and then see Altun Ha should I get the ferry back to Belize City and then get another bus there?
Everyone keeps saying that Belize City isn't a good place to stay so if I want to see Altun Ha where should I stay?
Also, if I have a week in Belize should I just stay in Caye Cauker? or should I bounce the islands?

Cheap place to stay Posted: Mon September 14, 2009 02:52 AM UTC
My husband and I are traveling to Caye Caulker at the end of September and just wondering where is the best cheapest place to stay. I have looked at staying at The Tropical Paradise or Trends. Also what about Ediths Guesthouse? Has anybody stayed here before? Any who, just wondering if someone might have any input and point us in the right direction. Thanks for all the info -t-

Taking my whole family to Belize for 10 days during Christmas Posted: Mon August 31, 2009 06:27 PM UTC
The whole family will be going to Belize during Christmas for 10 days. My kids are 10 and 5 and very experienced travelers. I wanted to know what would be the best region to stay with the Kids so they have enough activities (Ambergris, Caye Caulker, Belize City, ...). I also wanted to know if anyone has rented a house or an apartment down there, instead of a resort or is resort the best way to go? And do I need a rental car?
Thanks for any advice and comments

Hodies and security Posted: Wed August 26, 2009 09:56 PM UTC
I'm wondering about the thumbs up for Hodies, especially for dinner when it is likely that patrons will be coming home in the dark. The restaurant is located up near the soccer field and I understand that there was an attempted robbery there.
So, if there are other places for me to eat in San Ignacio, I don't think I'm going to take the chance.

Driving from Cancun to Belize - Belmopan Posted: Tue August 25, 2009 04:34 PM UTC
We will have a group of about 12-14 people. Our trip will be the first week of November 2009. We are a mission group and we usually fly into Belize. It looks like we could save about $3000.00 flying into Cancun and driving to Belize. Can anyone tell me if this would be a good plan? I have read it is about a 3 1/2 drive to Belize but how long would it take to drive to Belmopan? Are there fees when we depart Belize? At the airport there is a $35.00 fee but I have not found if there are fees when driving across the border back into Mexico. Are there any other fees when crossing the border. I have read that we can rent vans in Cancun and they give you papers to cross the border so if anyone has anything to share I would appreciate it. Our luggage for 12-14 people might be a problem. We usually have someone in Belize pick us up with a trailer that we carry the luggage in. We usually have 1 suitcase full of things that we give away in Belize per person. Would this be a problem crossing the border?
If anyone could give us any travel tips I would appreciate it.

1 Week in Belize with 4-year-old Posted: Wed August 19, 2009 05:11 PM UTC
I would like to travel with my husband and 4-year-old to Belize and stay in less touristy places. I wonder if all the attractions require knowing how to swim? My daughter loves the beach, but she can't swim on her own. Can we see some fish right near the beach? Also, does it make sense to rent a car to drive around and see caves, and such? And do these trips require strenous hiking or are there enough places to see close to roads?
thank you for your advice!

Looking for Belize advice, esp. about the Cayo cave / ruins district Posted: Fri July 31, 2009 08:25 PM UTC
Hello, new here but would appreciate feedback. I am taking my daughter to belize in two weeks and have never been. we are going to the Jaguar paw in the cayo district, then to san pedro in ambergis cay.
i would appreciate any advice i could get, esp. re: the cayo district. with three days, im planning one for ruins, one (or maybe a half day) for cave tubing, and one TBA. im tempted to leave my daughter at the hotel at some point and doing the crystal sepulchre cave, that sounds unforgettable. but id also like to get out and see the jungle.
i only have time to see one area of temples. xunantunich is by far the closest, but and caracol and tikal are both reachable and larger. i also have to consider that my daughter is a couch potato and hates hiking. id love to hike around tikal but it may be a bit much for her. can anyone advise on which ruins are most rewarding?
also, are any zip line canopy tours worth it? the pics ive found dont look anywhere near as impressive as what is offered in costa rica.
any good places to see or eat in belmopan? is it better and or cheaper to taxi in to belmopan for a trip (such as to tikal) than just booking from the jaguar paw? their excursions arent cheap.
any thoughts on ambergris cay would be good to. right now im thinking snorkeling and other wise being lazy after busting my but the jungle.
your time is much appreciated- dr

Belize Customs Posted: Wed July 15, 2009 12:47 AM UTC
Hello,
I am flying into Belize International in August and then on to Placencia for a 7 day sailboat trip. After talking with the people coordinating the trip, we've decided to bring our own wine for the trip. Can someone answer the following questions for me?
#1 - Based on what I've read, each person is allowed to bring in 1 bottle; will they let us bring in more than 1 bottle per person?
#2 - If yes, any idea what the customs tax might be?
#3 - On one of the govt websites, it didn't say anything about declaring alcohol, do I have to declare what I've got packed in my suitcase?
Thanks for your help!

Belize Zoo Issues - Camera Issues Posted: Mon May 25, 2009 04:13 PM UTC
Has anyone else experienced problems with the Belize Zoo staff re: cameras & telephoto lenses? They have an unstated policy of denying access with lenses that they think are too big! We walked away when they decided a 70-200 mm was too big. Do not make the mistake of changing lenses and leaving your telephoto in your car - it may not be there when you return. Save your money and go elsewhere to enjoy Belize.

Arranging tours in Belize Posted: Fri May 22, 2009 05:16 AM UTC
Hi all,
My husband-to-be and I are going to Belize for our honeymoon in early September. I was wondering if we should try to sign up for tours to places like Tikal, Xunantunich, diving/snorkeling, and so on, ahead of time from the States (by internet), or arrange them once we get there. Is there a difference in price either way? We plan to spend a few days in Ambergris, in San Ignacio, and maybe elsewhere, and use them as basepoints for day excursions.
Do you have particular tour operators that you have been happy with?
One final question: What can we expect in terms of weather for the last week of August/first week of September? I heard it is rainy, does that mean low incidence of sun?
Thanks so much for your replies in advance!

taking my whole family including 3 kids to Belize in Nov. Posted: Mon May 4, 2009 12:59 PM UTC
the whole family will be going to Belize in Nov. (the week before Thanksgiving) hoping the hurricane season is done by then :) I need as much information as possible: what region to stay in, should we stay on a caye for some of the time, what excursions are good for kids....so on. I would also like to hear from anyone who has traveled with children to Belize. My kids are 14, 12 and 7 and very experienced travelers but I'm still anxious. Thanks for any advice and comments

Lots of questions..caving in Belize etc....! Posted: Sun April 19, 2009 12:07 PM UTC
Hi! I'm tenatively planning a three week trip to Belize/Guatamala in September. Is it easy to travel from Belize over to Tikal National Park? Has anyone stayed at The Caves Branch Jungle Lodge? Or have any other recommendations for caving In Belize? (I have experience.)
Also, I'll be traveling from London - can anyone recommend a good way to get there - is it easier/cheaper/or even possible to get a connecting flight from Cancun?
Thanks very much!

safe for 21 year old woman to do internship in belize city??? Posted: Mon March 23, 2009 03:44 PM UTC
daughter planned on going to belize city to do humanitarian internship, possibly with the garifuna people. red flags abound at this point about her safety as we read lots of reports about how dangerous this destination is. please give us input. she would not be with a group, just herself. are these crime reports ovrblown, or should we be genuinely concerned?
are there other areas of the country belize which would be a safer choice?
thanks so much for any input/experiences in this city.

Travel from Cancun to Ambergris Posted: Tue March 17, 2009 11:46 AM UTC
Hi there,
Im flying to Cancun and want to get to Ambergris directly. I know I can get buses from Cancun to Chetumal in Mexico and then Corozal in Belize before getting a boat. But does anyone know how I can find out about these buses and what times they go? Im travelling alone so would like to organise it as much as possible before I get there.
Also could anyone recommend a cheap, but quiet hotel in San Pedro?
Thanks a lot

cay caulker Posted: Sat January 31, 2009 11:18 PM UTC
We are on a cruise, so just have one day in Belize. We want to take a water taxi out to cay caulker. Is there any snorkeling possible from the beach rather than a tour. We have been out to the reef on another trip, but would like to spend more of the day on cay caulker with just a little snorkeling. Time is important as we must get back to the ship.

Diving Trip in Belize- Best Area/Hotel To Stay to Focus on Diving Posted: Mon January 19, 2009 02:19 AM UTC
I am heading to Belize on Feb 5. to spend 3 days doing as much diving as possible. I'm a novice to intermediate diver and will really be trying to dive most of the time I'm there. Can anyone please recommend a specific area to stay (e.g. I've read about Ambergris, is that the best place?). Also, any recommended hotels that specialize in arranging dive trips or that are popular amongst divers?
I'm going by myself so I'd be interested in staying at a "divers" hotel where I might be able to meet up with others going out. Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!
