I am posting this for my sister who is travelling for the first time to Europe in May. She and a friend (seniors) are looking for cheap but clean accommodation in Glasgow and Loch Lomond. Any suggestions would be appreciated and I will pass them on. Thanks.

Scotland Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 09:10 PM UTC
I haven't made it to Scotland yet, but I am planning to rectify that. I could fly from Shannon, Ireland or fly or take the train from London. Assuming I have 3-4 days/nights, what should I try to see? I don't mind renting a car, and I have a bum knee with recent surgery, so walking up and down hills might limit rambles up mountains.
Possible time frames: April, May, October or November of 2010
Interested in museums, how regular folks live, beautiful scenery, local events, unique happenings.
Thanks so much (in advance) for your help.

What to see on a short break Posted: Thu October 29, 2009 09:17 PM UTC
I'm off to Stirling for a couple of days in December and I'll be checking out Stirling castle, the Wallace monument and going up to Callander.
What else should I not miss. I've looked at a lot of internet sites so don't need pointing in that direction.
I'd like someone from the region or who knows the region well to make some suggestions. There seems so much and I have so little time.
Thanks

Where to stay in Scotland this Christmas? Any Scottish castles Posted: Wed October 28, 2009 11:39 PM UTC
I have been trying to find somewhere a bit unusual or upmarket for a family holiday this Christmas / New Year. I’ve looked at Sawday’s but they’re mainly B&B. When I do a normal google I get the usual last minute sites and 100’s of irrelevant / too expensive / fully booked stuff.
Anyone know of one stop site where I can find something unusual and book online?

Midges - How bad in the summer? Posted: Thu October 15, 2009 07:58 AM UTC
I have read in another thread about the problem of midges. I have never read anything about it in guidebooks, and it was never mentioned by friends who have visited Scotland.
How bad is it? Shall we find many midges in the towns or only in rural areas? I mean in July.

6 adults in a mini-van in Scotland? Posted: Wed October 14, 2009 04:38 AM UTC
Planning a 10 day family tour next spring, with 6 adults. Not sure of itinerary yet but will want to go to Edinburgh and the Highlands. While some are seasoned travelers and former ex-pats in Europe, none have gone to Scotland before. The plan is to rent a mini-van. I am afraid that the roads will be too narrow and luggage for six won't fit either. But I don't know, never having been there.
Any thoughts?

Living on the Isle of Skye Posted: Sat October 10, 2009 06:22 PM UTC
Hi, we currently live in Spain and are looking to relocate to the Isle of Skye. Being out of the UK for 7 years we have no idea over the cost of living these days.
So we can make an informed decision, could someone please give me a rough idea of expenditure of things like council tax, heating, etc. Also, what are night storage heaters and how do they work? Is it like central heating?
For grocery shopping is there a Tescos in Portree for example. if so, is it reasonably priced.
any info would be greatly appreciated.
Also interested in a house swap if anyone living ther fancies living in a beautiful part of southern spain. (4 bed villa, pool, large gardens etc)

Question about travelling on a one way ticket Posted: Sat October 10, 2009 06:19 PM UTC
Hi,
Would someone be able to tell me if there would be a problem entering the UK on a one way ticket, with a valid Canadian passport accompanied with an expired British passport. The reason for travel is to visit a terminally ill relative, so at the moment a return date hasn't been determined.
Thanks
Jim

Interesting spots on our itinerary? Posted: Thu October 8, 2009 08:33 AM UTC
We shall go to Scotland for the first time next summer. We have 20 days and we have planned an itinerary. Are there any special things we should not miss along the route?
We fly into Glasgow and rent a car, then we drive to:
Fort William
Mallaig
Isle of Skye
Kyle of Lochalsh
Fort Augustus
Inverness
Perth
Edinburgh
We have already planned to stop and see Loch Lomond, Eilean Donan Castle, Uquhart Castle, but we would like to know if there are other interesting spots along the way.

The pages of VT members have helped us very much in creating an tinerary for our holidays of next summer, but there are no recent info about hotels in Fort Augustus. We prefer hotels or B&B than hostels.

Hello. I'm looking for a place to stay in Portree, perhaps a B&B or Hotel, that is centrally located, near some pubs and restaurants. Most places that i've found, just look really run-down and "tired".
some places im considering:
Peinmore House
Dunsgiath Apts
Rosedale Hotel
The Pink Guest House
Bosville
Any help would be great

2.5 days in Edinburgh Posted: Sat September 26, 2009 08:46 AM UTC
Hi Everyone,
My friend and I will be visiting December from the 26th - 29th December this year.
We really only have the 27th - 28th full days and then till about 1pm on the 29th until we have to fly back to London.
We've never been to Edinburgh before, and I was wondering if you think we should take those entire 2.5 days to explore the city, or whether you think that a half day / full day tour of other parts of country side (ie the Highlands / Loch Ness) might be a good idea?

I will be in Scotland traveling around for 10 days in October. I'll have some free time in Edinburgh and would be interested in shopping at some used clothing stores. Is there a particular area of the city where I can find some nice shops?
Thank you.

Pitlochry, Oban, or somewhere else between Highlands and Glasgow...? Posted: Wed September 23, 2009 10:19 PM UTC
Hello. We're going to be up in Skye for 2 nights, and will be heading back down to Glasgow. We're looking for a place to stop for the night to break up the drive. I've looked into Oban, or Pitlochry. does anyone have an opinion on these, or is there another place, say 2 hrs or so from Glasgow that would be better?
Thanks for the help

im having a tough time deciding what towns to stay in. I was thinking about somewhere near Ft William for the first night, then on to Skye for 2 nights, 4th night im not sure, and finally stay the last night near loch Lomond, and drive to the Glasgow airport for a 1230p flight home.

4days visit Posted: Fri September 18, 2009 07:08 PM UTC
hello
I'm planning to visit Edinburgh late October for 4 nights and I'm currently looking for a self-catered center located apartment for 4 persons.
I have found several ones on the web with good ratings (~100GBP/night), but any reviews from personal experience would help me very much.
I don't mind the facilities, but would like it to have some local color and not IKEA's..
thank you in advance

Wild Camping Posted: Fri September 18, 2009 12:42 AM UTC
Hi there,
My mate and I are planning on a 7 days wild camping trip around the island but we do not know where to start. All we know is that we are catching an overnight bus from London to Glasglow. We have no idea what to plan next. We will not be hiring the car and thus the public transportation seems to be the only choice. Our plan is to just hike around the island and if we find somewhere we like, we will just camp and stay for the night. Any comments?
Since both of us are photographers, we are also interested in looking at sites with stunning views. Can you guys recommend us a route and also the best scenery you've every caught your eyes on in Isle of Skye?
Thanks lots.

which train station in Edinburgh? Posted: Sat September 12, 2009 04:30 PM UTC
Hi
I will be taking the train from Manchester to Edinburgh. When I book the ticket, there are 3 train stations in Edinburgh - Haymarket, Park or Edinburgh. I am probably staying somewhere Blackfriars near High Street. Which station should I go to? I would like to go to Liverpool and I understand that a day trip is possible. What places should i visit in Liverpool? thanks for your help.

I am in the final planning stages for our trip to Loch Fyne - Strathlachlan - and planning on driving up to Oban and spending time in Iveraray as well. Would anyone have a recommendation for a good place to eat in either location - and would there be any MUST SEE pubs in either location?
Thanks much - Gen
