England Skylink from Derby to East Midlands Airport
Posted: Fri May 16, 2008 12:45 AM UTC
Does anyone know how reliable this bus service is regarding travel time? The schedule says it will take 30 minutes from Derby station to the airport, even at peak-traffic hours in the evening. I have no idea what the traffic situation is like in that area and would therefore be grateful for some advice on the time I'll realistically have to calculate.

Any ideas where we might be able to get on a computer and access the internet (even at a charge) near New Compton Street? We'd like to be able to email friends and family a couple times during our time in London, but without the worries of bringing our own laptop. Thanks!

London Disloyalty Fees (ATM fees) in London and UK
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 07:29 PM UTC
Hi,

I was wondering if the UK banks charge any disloyalty fees. I read that they were abandoned after 2001 but wasn't sure if they have been readopted.

By disloyalty fees, I mean a flat fee that the ATM charges you if you are withdrawing money using an ATM card issued by another bank. (eg, I use a non-UK bank issued ATM card at an UK ATM)

THANKS!!

London Tips on this Itinerary?
Posted: Mon May 12, 2008 01:49 AM UTC
We are travelling to the UK for the first time this summer. I know we are probably trying to do waaaaay too much, but any suggestions to optimize time will be appreciated:

July 5
Arrive LGW and depart for BTH by train
Tour bath

July 6
Guided tour of Stonehenge, Lacock, Castle Combe/Cotswald

July 7
Train from BTH to DAT (where we have a cabin cruiser reserved)
Probably take train back to VIC that afternoon
Walk past Tower Bridge, Big Ben, etc.
Planning on visiting Vinopolis that evening

July 8
Tour of British Museum
Westminster Abbey
Jack the Ripper walking tour that night

July 9
Depart DAT for SAV by train
Tour of SAV/walk around

July 10
Warwick castle
Tickets purchased for Shakespeare play at Globe

July 11
Depart SAV to LHR by car service
LHR to DUB to start next leg of journey.

We are not looking to do any of the real touristy places in London proper (Harrods, Piccadilly Circus, the Eye, etc.). Thanks for any suggestions

England DVDs to London
Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 03:23 AM UTC
Hi everyone,

I'm moving from China to London. As anyone who has stayed in China for a while, I have amassed about 50 DVDs which I would like to take with me to London. However, I am unsure of their authenticity - has anyone had any experience with bringing DVDs/CDs into London from China? (I am aware that customs will sieze shipments that are intended to be sold - these DVDs are just for personal use).

Thanks

Heathrow How long to get out of Heathrow Airport?
Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 01:27 PM UTC
This may be an unanswerable question, but does anyone know how long is a reasonable time to allow, for non-EU citizens to get luggage, go through customs and get out of the airport and onto the Tube? We will arrive about 5pm on a Friday night.

We have to book a forward journey from St. Pancras station, and not sure what time train to book. We have been encouraged to book the train in advance, to save money. I thought maybe a train from St. Pancras at 8.30pm would be okay, or is that cutting it too fine?

Love to have any feedback about this. Love to know if there are any stats. about planes arriving late, etc. but I suppose they don't exist.

London YHA - Youth Hostels - Budget accomodation

Are they safe enough for a single female? I've heard lots of mixed reviews for the hostels in London.
If someone can recommend any alternatives on a budget I'd appreciate it.

London car rental @ Heathrow
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 04:23 PM UTC
I have to rent a car for 2 days next month, on arrival at T1 in Heathrow.

From memory, all the car hire companies are well away from the terminals and you have to take a shuttle bus. I think I used Budget the last time, and I know I've used Avis in the past.

Any recent recommendations based on price & convenience?

London London to Cardiff by bus
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 11:24 PM UTC
Hi,

I'm planning on taking a national express coach from London to Cardiff soon but my girlfriend is convinced that this is a bad idea. She thinks that it will take ages and be very uncomfortable. I think that it will only be a few hours and surprisingly comfortable. Also, it's far cheaper than going by rail. Can anybody tell me if taking the bus is a good idea or is it a nightmare like my girlfriend thinks it is? Appreciate any help on this!

Thanks.

London Oyster card vs. Travel card
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 04:47 PM UTC
Hello! More questions. I have been reading up on oyster card and 1 day travel cards but I am still so confused! Hope someone can help.

The plan is that I will probably be travelling only around zone 1 and 2 (with an out of town trip planned). THerefore, I will spend around 4 days in London (non consecutive). Ignoring whether I get peak or non-peak, do I:

1) Get an oyster card for the entire time I am in London?
2) Get a one day pass for each day I am travelling?
3) Get a 3 day pass and then one day pass?

I keep reading contradicting reviews. Some say that oyster will cap at the one day travel pass; so getting an oyster versus one day pass would not make a difference (other than the initial 3 pounds deposit). Some say it won't cap for the one day but will for a 7 day.

Basically, I am looking at it from a cost point of view. I understand that oyster is convenient as you just swipe it, but is it more value for money???

From what I read it seems that either of this cards can be easily bought. So getting it should not be a problem right?

London Taxi or Tube
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 12:29 PM UTC
what is faster and more convenient, Taxi or Tube?
I am going to a concert in London next week, and would like to know should I take a taxi or tube from
Liverpool Street to Bloomsbury (the Lancaster Hotel, it is near a tube station)
and then
from Bloomsbury to the Wigham Hall

If the taxi is faster and more convenient I don't mind paying for it, or is it a lot faster by tube? The tube isn't cheap either is it?
