Car hire in Helsinki Posted: Wed October 22, 2008 08:00 PM UTC
Hello all!
Is it possible to hire a car in Helsinki and drive it as far as Moscow before leaving it off? What car companies would deal with this?
Will there be any problems at the border crossing? Apart from the length of delay with the queue?
Thanks in advance

Public Transportation in Helsinki Posted: Wed September 10, 2008 01:15 PM UTC
I'm a little confused.
I bought this 5 day Tourist Card. But, are the trams free anyways? I don't see anyone paying for those. And I don't understand the ticketting for the metro (subway). It just seems like you can walk right into the metro without paying? Am I missing something?
I understand that for the busses, you have to pay a fare and show your tourist card, but for everything else it just seems like I can hop on for free. I don't see why I need this Tourist Card.
Thanks, I just arrived in Finland so I'm completely lost!

Questions About International Travel Posted: Wed August 27, 2008 10:22 PM UTC
Hello everybody, I'm new here if you didn't already deduct that. I'm currently living in America, and in about two years I'm taking a trip to Helsinki, Finland. I'm very excited and I'm trying to get all of my "ducks in a row" as soon as possible. I've never left the country before, which leaves me wondering about a lot of things. The questions I'm currently most concerned about are about money. How do I exchange my USD for Euros? How do I store my money? Do I go to an embassy? What should I know about visiting another country?
That's about it for now, thanks in advance and please let me know if I've posted in the wrong forum or otherwise!

A visit to Helsinki in September Posted: Thu July 31, 2008 08:01 AM UTC
Hello, folks!
Please give me some info about the travel to Helsinki.
1. If I'm coming from Stockholm what's the best mode of transportation?
How much is the fare for the ferry (average per pax)?
How long is the travel time by ferry?
2. About the weather, is it already cold during the first week of Sept.?
Any replies/info are very much appreciated.
Thanks very much.

Few days in August in Helsinki Posted: Tue July 29, 2008 02:22 PM UTC
Hello guys,
I will be visiting Helsinki from 1st of August to 6th of August.
I will be in a Bed and Breakfast hotel.
I would like to stay in Helsinki only 1 or 2 days to visit the city. I don't like shopping and in general very crowded and touristic places. I don't like museums too. Could you please advice on the best places to see in the city for 1 or 2 days? What are the best and less touristic places where to eat local dishes in the city? What are the typical dishes to try?
My intention is to rent a car because I'd love to see some natural sites around Helsinki. I love natural wonders a lot (waterfalls, panorama, forest, lake, sea etc.). Could you please advise on the best places to see around Helsinki
with one-day trips by car? What are the best and less touristic places where to eat local dishes around Helsinki? What to eat?
Thanks a lot in advance.

ice cream Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 12:43 PM UTC
I would also just like to add that when you're in Helsinki you really have to try the salted black liquorice ice cream. I do not like black liquorice at all, and the idea of ice cream made out of it sounded truly revolting. The fact that it's grey-black in color doesn't help. But then I tried it and was amazed.
Helsinki has to be one of the greatest places on earth!

Classical music in Hakaniemi Square Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 12:38 PM UTC
During a trip to Helsinki in June I saw a wonderful group of musicians performing near a coffee and pastries stand in the farmers market in Hakaniemi Square. It sounds kind of silly, but listening to them play while enjoying a coffee + doughnut with a bunch of locals was a real highlight of my trip. It was around 11am on Saturday June 14 and it was a group of 4 or 5 strings, led (so it seemed) by a very energetic bearded man who wore a baseball cap.
I know it's a long, long shot, but might anyone here have any information about the players or the material they performed? I have some poor quality recordings of the performance from my phone. If anyone with any knowledge of classical music would be willing to listen to these, I'd love to figure out what the pieces they were playing. Thanks!

Best Time to Travel to Finland Posted: Tue July 15, 2008 08:16 PM UTC
My boyfriend and I have done a lot of research and are very interested in possibly moving to Finland in the future. We'd like to take a trip out to Helsinki sometime this year to experience Finland firsthand.
What is the best time of year to visit Finland/Helsinki?
We're not interested in tourist attractions. We want to experience the people/culture/way of life. We were thinking of visiting next month, since there is a lot more going on in the summer months (and many more hours of sun to see it in!). However, we realize the summer is the peak of tourism. We were also thinking of visiting in November/December, so we could get a good taste of the weather! But we're worried that we won't get to experience much of the people/culture since there's limited daylight.
Any thoughts/insight would be so greatly appreciated!

Help needed to get antibiotic called Klacid Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 04:17 PM UTC
My sister is staying in Helsinki and Espoo area. She has had an attack of bronchitis and she needs to get hold of this antibiotic called Klacid (brand name). If I am not wrong, it is actually called clarithromycin.
1) She is allergic to many antibiotics and so I was just wondering if anyone knows where she can purchase this antibiotic.
2) Does she need a prescription?
3) If so, where can she get one?
4) Will a prescription from a Singapore doctor be acceptable by the drugstores in Finland? I am thinking of getting her doctor to email me the prescription.
5) I have actually bought the medicine but could not send them by courier as I need a permit from the Helsinki immigration side.
Please advise me. Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much

Helsinki from Tallin Posted: Sun June 29, 2008 08:26 PM UTC
Hello...I am considering a cruise next year out of Stockholm that makes an enroute stop at Tallinn. The cruise does NOT stop at Helsinki but I would like to visit there. The ship is in port in Tallin from 9am to 5pm. Is it concievable to be able to take a ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki and back in time to get to the ship again? What is the best ferry line to take, and about how much is a round trip ticket between Tallinn and Helsinki?

good bicycle rental place in helsinki area Posted: Thu June 26, 2008 10:33 PM UTC
i am training for an ironman race in the fall. i am looking for a nice bike for long rides (5-7 hours of length) where i will cover up to 180km. any thoughts? there is a greenbike.fi website but the hybrid bike does not look that good. is there a higher end store/place that might rent a real triathlong bike? i could take my own bike for the three weeks that i am visiting my wife's family in helsinki but it is a pain to disassemble bike, reassemble bike and it is expensive to bring it with me on the flight from nyc to helsinki....appua...

short visit to Helsinki Posted: Mon June 16, 2008 06:04 PM UTC
I'll be in Helsinki from 27th evening to 29th morning, extending my stay after a business meeting
I'm trying to do my homework, but with such short notice, and being very busy at the moment, I fear to miss something "unmissable"... Basically I plan to do general sightseeing, walking around stopping where I find anything I like. I'd like to visit Temppeliaukion kirkko (sp?) and maybe the Kiasma contemporary art museum
I know just one complete and 2 half days is not enough..... so, Helsinki residents/experts, what are your favorite places in town? is there any special even on these days?
As well if any VT'ers around would like to meet up for a drink, do let me know!!

Helsinki to Stockholm Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 08:48 PM UTC
I am interested in any information regarding ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm. I am not looking for a cruise or anything spectacular. I am just considering a ferry ride across the Baltic. I have looked at several pages on the ferrys, but they have a lot of information and its a bit confusing. I would like to purchase a one way ticket for one person, looking for the cheapest ticket I can find.
Thanks for suggestions

Cost of living in Helsinki and Espoo Posted: Fri May 16, 2008 03:18 PM UTC
Hi! My sister and her husband will be visiting Helsinki and Espoo for 37 days. Their accomodation has been taken care of as they are living with friends and family members. However, not to take advantage of their hospitality, my sister and her spouse have offered to buy groceries and to take them out for meals. Most of the time, they will be on their own exploring the area using public transport. They are unsure of the prices in restaurants and the prices of groceries in supermarkets or of an average meal at say, perhaps, McDonald's. Could somebody out there please help them to estimate how many euros they would need on an average per day. they will probably eat out for lunch or maybe at times pack sandwiches whch would be cheaper. please could you give us an idea of what the prices are over at Helsinki and Espoo so they can know how much to take along with them. At present, they are thinking of budgeting 100 euros per day for the 2 of them to cover transport and food. is that too much or too little? would appreciate any kind of advice. many thanks

What is happening in Helsinki this weekend? Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 08:26 PM UTC
Hei all,
I'm going to Helsinki this weekend from Tallinn, and besides going to see a show in Tavastia club, I've got lots and lots of free time on both saturday and sunday.
What kind of events are happening in Helsinki then? Any interesting fairs or whatever.. Something that would be worth to go and take a few photos of, or participate by myself and meet new people...
This is a very broad question, but please suggest something :)
