Looking at a possible trip to Scandinavia in March which would include a ferry crossing from Helsinki to Tallinn. Are there any problems with this crossing in early March?

Helsinki Public transportation, what's best: pay as you go or HKL tourist ticket?
Posted: Sat January 5, 2008 10:06 PM UTC
As part of a weekend trip to Helsinki, I'm in charge of the logistics part - meaning how to get where from the hostel/hotel and how much it's going to cost. We haven't booked any places yet but we're debating between Stadion Hostel, Eurohostel and Omena Hotel. The place that no one wants to miss out on is Temppeliaukio church and everything else seems like "whatever I say". With that said, some other places of interested might be the Museum of Technology, Helsinki Car Museum and if the time and weather allows it either Suomenlinna fortress or Högholmen zoo.

Last time I was there the single ticket cost 2€ and was valid for an hour, and I know that a lot of attractions are within walking distance from each other but based on the itinerary and the hotel/hostels listed above, what's the best option for us: pay as you go or buy a 3-day HKL tourist ticket? The ETA is mid April and it might be early evening Friday to noon Sunday.

Thanks in advance.

Helsinki sauna in Helsinki
Posted: Sat December 8, 2007 11:49 PM UTC
Hi,
does anyone know if there is any sauna that will be opened on 24 Dec - 25 Dec?
And whether people could pay for using the sauna inside the hotels even if they are not the guests of that hotel?

Helsinki Helsinki - talinn
Posted: Fri December 7, 2007 10:14 AM UTC
Hi guys and girls,

I have a question for you. I'm coming to you Capital next friday. I'm staying untill monday. I would love to take a trip to Talinn. And that's where the question is for. Should I book this trip online or do you think I still have time to do it in Helsinki. I would like to go on Saturday, because on Sonday I'll think the shops are closed and Monday is my return date.

Should I book online or do I have time to book next friday for the day after. If you say online, do you know a good site. I found lindapilet (42 € returntrip) and nordic Jetline (56 € returntrip) Can somebody help me please.

Helsinki New Year's Eve?
Posted: Fri November 9, 2007 03:51 PM UTC
We'll be in Helsinki for New Year's Eve this year, our first time.

A few questions:

1. Will we have to fight our way to the bar all the time? Or are they easy to get in without throngs of crowds (like the UK) filling every available space?

2. Will it be booking only for bars and restaurants?

3. How much for a beer?

4. What will the weather be like?

4. In the UK, New Year's Eve is a major thing. People are packed like sardines into every pub. There also might be vomiting and fighting! Is Helsinki more cultured than all of this?

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Helsinki Turku or Tampere?
Posted: Sun November 4, 2007 09:44 AM UTC
G'day,

My girlfriend and I will be traveling to Finland in late March next year where we will be there for a few days.

Was wondering if any locals of other travelers who have been there would recommend turku or tampere as a destination. We will be in Helsinki but we would also like to check out other cities in Finland.

Which one is better or would anyone recommend? We will only have enough time to go to one or the other.

Thank you for any advice,

Leighton

Helsinki Airport shuttle
Posted: Sun November 4, 2007 08:14 AM UTC
Hi, i am travelling to Helsinki for a couple of days in early March 2008 and i have booked a hostel at the eurohostel in town. I am wondering if it is easy to get a shuttle into town or directly to the hostel.

Does anyone know of a timetable or costs for such a service?

Any websites would be great.

Also does anyone know if staying at the eurohostel at this time of year is ok? Location wise?

I only have 2 days to see the sights (in the cold!) I am hoping for sub -10 degree weather as i am used to mid twenties here in Australia and i'd love to experience real cold!

Cheers

Helsinki Helsinki for a few hours?
Posted: Sun August 19, 2007 09:34 PM UTC
En route to another location, I have 5.5 and 8 hour stopovers in Helsinki. Rather than just waste time in the airport, I want to go out and see what of Helsinki I can. I am going in late winter (Dec 23 and Jan 4) and arriving in the morning and leaving in the afternoon. Can anyone suggest what to look at while I'm there, how to get into & around town, etc? And especially if it is possible to see the aurora? Or any special Christmas events? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Helsinki Helsinki in early November

My wife and I will be in Finland for the first weeks of November. What are the "don't miss" for a 4-day weekend in Helsinki? What are nearby cities not to miss? We've tentatively planned to visit St. Petersburg, Stockholm and Tallinn; are there other nearby spots you like? How cold will it be then?

Thank you,

Helsinki Teeerve, Helsinki = ))
Posted: Thu August 2, 2007 09:23 PM UTC
Hello everyone!
I'll be spending 3 weeks in Helsinki, starting from next Monday, mainly for Helsinki Summer School (course - Wood in Construction and Architecture) but I want to experience Finland the real way, all around and as much as possible as I adore that land and am learning the language and whatnot.

That being said, I'd like to meet interesting people here who can suggest me some good places to visit (anything concerning alternative scene, a bit on the gloomy side, museums and galleries which are not in the general "to visit" list for tourists) or possibly people who are going to the same course as myself.

Greetings,
Lux.

Helsinki VT meetings around 16-19 August
Posted: Mon July 30, 2007 03:52 PM UTC
I am planning to be in Helsinki for a long weekend starting from Thu 16 August and was wondering if anybody has got any meetings planned for the weekend. I will be there until Sun 19 August. I am originally from Finland and know Helsinki pretty alright, but I live in the UK and do not get very many changes to visit Helsinki anymore. Unfortunately, my visit is rather short, but I am hoping to squeeze some serious sightseeing into those 4 days and, of course, I am planning to chill out as well. I also am up for a drink, coffee, sightseeing tour or something, should anybody feel like joining me. =)
