| Helsinki | one day bus ticket Posted: Fri April 25, 2008 06:22 PM UTC
on getting down at the international airport we plan to take the bus 615 to our hotel [3.5 euros] and then buy the one day tourist ticket [ 6 euros ] for the rest of the day . if we buy the one day ticket on bus 615 will it work on bus 615 as well as on other city buses the rest of the day [ ie can we save that 3.5 euros we spend on bus 615 or does the airport fall outside the range of the one day tourist ticket] ? i hope i am not being too troublesome to our friends in the forum but 1 euro is equal to 65 indian rupees now whereas it was much less a month ago . thanks anuj from delhi

| Helsinki | Rental car to discover or not Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 11:42 AM UTC
Hi there,
in three weeks I`m for business in Helsinki and will stay for the weekend for my own to discover the city. I love Sweden and Norway so much, that I think that I will also like Helsinki. During the week, I have a rental car but I`m not shure if I will rent it also for the weekend (my own cost) to discover Helsinki and the hinterland. What do you think about is it easyer with a car or is it easyer without?? Cheers Clemens |

| Helsinki | travel and food Posted: Sun April 20, 2008 05:49 PM UTC
We are a family of 5 adults and one 11 year old child booked to stay at the scandic hotel marski [ mannerheiminitie ] helsinki . After our arrival from delhi to the international airport at helsinki , will it be cheaper to take a taxi to the hotel for the 5 of us or would the finnair bus be preferable ? In case the bus is cheaper , where would it drop us ? Is it walkable to the hotel after that or would we have to take a taxi ? . Are there any big departmental stores around the hotel area that can provide cheaper food like bread , butter , milk , yoghurt , salad etc. Given the cost of euro that is escalating by the day against the rupee , it will not be feasible to eat out everyday . i would really appreciate a reply . thanks DR anuj from delhi

| Helsinki | Weather and length of day February - May Posted: Mon April 7, 2008 10:23 PM UTC
I am considering going to Helsinki for 1 semester next year, but I have to decide tomorrow. My choices are Liverpool, Copenhagen and Helsinki. I like Helsinki the most, but I am worried about the weather.
What can I expect form February to May? How much light do you get in February during the day? I sure expect some cold weather, but I would like to travel and do some sightseeing, which is a little bit complicated in 3°C. Thanks! |

| Helsinki | Midsummer in Helsinki? Posted: Tue April 1, 2008 07:57 PM UTC
Hi there
We were planning to visit Helsinki on the weekend of 20 to 22 June, but we have just realised this would coincide with Midsummer. We were in Tallinn around Midsummer last year and it was quite a pain, as most shops and restaurants were closed. Would we have the same problem in Helsinki? Would it be smarter to move our visit to the weekend before (or after) Midsummer? Thank you all in advance. Eugene |

| Helsinki | I have been told off! Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 01:41 PM UTC
It seems my written english has caused some distress to at least one VTer. Apologies if it may sound as if I am stating Finns are Scandinavians, you are not you are from the Nordic region and are a people with a Finno-Ugaric language. ( However I think I did say you were not Scandinavians.)
In respect of your language skills, again apologies if my written style suggests you only speak Finnish, Swedish and then English as a third language. Many of my friends speak other european languages and I have never met a country with so many people who speak other languages so fluently. As a business and comercial tool English will very probably match Spanish and German as your third language I am sure - follwoed closely I am sure by Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and so on. Oh dear people of Finland, please forgive me! |

| Helsinki | Advice/Opinion: crazy idea or ??? Posted: Mon January 14, 2008 11:32 AM UTC
I'm in charge of planning a weekend trip to Finland in mid April. I've booked a room in a hostel in Helsinki and was planning for what I think was supposed to be an introductory trip to Finland by spending the whole weekend in Helsinki, after all there's so much to see there...but no. The other party wants a day trip somewhere in Finland *sigh* I've reminded the other person that we're only having one full day in Finland (from Friday evening to Sunday noon) but nope, the person wants a day trip somewhere. After careful consideration Tampere is the winner in my book so this is the idea I've got so far (because I'm in charge of everything :/):
- breakfast at hostel - early train to Tampere - visit to särkänniemi's planetarium and observation deck and maybe their aquarium (I'm not into art so the art museum is a pass for me) - either lunch at adventure park or on another restaurant in the vicinity - if there's time maybe a little walk thru the vicinity - early evening train back to Helsinki. Now, I've always put quality over quantity and I still think just being in Helsinki should do considering that the other person hasn't been to Finland but it seems to me they just want to say "I've been in Finland"...anyway here's the question: what would you recommend to a first-time visitor? I've been in Helsinki twice by boat and the 7 hours weren't enough so imagine this person... |

| Helsinki | Public transportation, what's best: pay as you go or HKL tourist ticket? Posted: Sat January 5, 2008 10:06 PM UTC
As part of a weekend trip to Helsinki, I'm in charge of the logistics part - meaning how to get where from the hostel/hotel and how much it's going to cost. We haven't booked any places yet but we're debating between Stadion Hostel, Eurohostel and Omena Hotel. The place that no one wants to miss out on is Temppeliaukio church and everything else seems like "whatever I say". With that said, some other places of interested might be the Museum of Technology, Helsinki Car Museum and if the time and weather allows it either Suomenlinna fortress or Högholmen zoo.
Last time I was there the single ticket cost 2€ and was valid for an hour, and I know that a lot of attractions are within walking distance from each other but based on the itinerary and the hotel/hostels listed above, what's the best option for us: pay as you go or buy a 3-day HKL tourist ticket? The ETA is mid April and it might be early evening Friday to noon Sunday. Thanks in advance. |

| Helsinki | Helsinki - talinn Posted: Fri December 7, 2007 10:14 AM UTC
Hi guys and girls,
I have a question for you. I'm coming to you Capital next friday. I'm staying untill monday. I would love to take a trip to Talinn. And that's where the question is for. Should I book this trip online or do you think I still have time to do it in Helsinki. I would like to go on Saturday, because on Sonday I'll think the shops are closed and Monday is my return date. Should I book online or do I have time to book next friday for the day after. If you say online, do you know a good site. I found lindapilet (42 € returntrip) and nordic Jetline (56 € returntrip) Can somebody help me please. xxx |
