San Juan Municipio Travel Forum

I'm going to the San Juan area with my 16-year-old-daughter for about ten days on Aug. 1 (before being joined by my wife & doing some island travel), and am having difficulty getting a clear picture of the differences among these three beaches and their respective communities. The primary objective will be relaxing and swimming at the beach, maybe trying some different watersports and other local activities(trip into OSJ, taking in some traditional dance, etc.). With a teenager, I'm obviously not interested in the club or casino scene, and I'm not a Las-Vegas-glitter type anyway. We can afford budget-to-moderate accomodations, up to about $160. I've heard that the Condado beach is not real clean, that Isla Verde has a much more well-healed (& stuffier?) crowd, and that Ocean Park is the nicest & quietest area, but too rough for swimming. Up to now, our beach experience has been the Caribe Hilton's private beach, and Playa Flamenco, two tough acts to follow. Could anyone help us by describing the feel of these 3 beaches and their respective surrounding ambience? Your help is greatly appreciated!

even though its a common wealth of the USA are there any parties,festivals, or fireworks celebrated in San Juan on July 4th? We will be down there the 3rd-6th and I've only heard of a local festival held by the mayor in the town center. I definitely would love to go it, but I want to make sure it is actually gonna happen.

I am going to puerto rico in November and want to take salsa lessons 4-6 hours a day. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can find a teacher and how much I should plan on spending?

How far this hotels from the airport of San Juan?Thank you for your help..

I am going to be in San Juan Thursday to Monday and I would like to do the tourist thing during the day but at night I like to party. I want to know if anyone has any good ideas of places to see during the day? Also any good clubs and or night spots to go to?

Are there harbor sightseeing cruises in San Juan of the type similar to the river cruises I have taken in London and Paris -- showing historical and cultural sights? If so, please point me to the providers -- name, address, phone, website, etc. -- if possible.

If not, are there charter bus tours?

we looked at el convento ... sold out. What's left is too expensive. We are in Rio Grande for 6 days and wanted San Juan (affordable and w/in walking) for Thurs and Fri 2/28-3/1. Any suggestions?? Thanks

We will be debarking from a cruise ship early morning (9:00) and will not have our flight out until 7:00 p.m. Where can we store (lockers?) are luggage while we enjoy SJ? thanks for any info.

Hi Everyone,

We are making a stop by air to San Juan for about 3-4 days in April of 2008. Need advice on hotels, not necessarily beach-front though that is appreciated, restaurants, local attractions (we'd rather experience some 'real' PR rather than the commercial one) and things you've enjoyed doing there. Let me know how long ago you went and any other info you can put down I might find helpful!

Hello fellow VT'ers,

Besides the hotels and guesthouses listed on VT, does anyone know of any budget accommodations in San Juan? What I require is:

- cleanliness
- a website or e-mail where I can contact the reservations dept.
- it doesn't have to be right in the middle of the action as long as there are good public transportation means close by (we don't drive). Our budget is around 80US per room per night and we're 2 adults staying 1-2 nights (haven't decided that yet).

I've seen an inn called Tres Palmas, located on Park Boulevard. How's that street as of safety, public means connections? If you have any thoughts about the inn itself please let me know. All hotels/guesthouses/inns I've looked at, within my budget, have mixed reviews on Trip Advisor (there's always someone complaining about something); 2 of the 3 places I've contacted have scores have 3.5 out of 5 and the other one 3 out of 5, there's one without scores as of now.

And then my question about taxes is, what's the room tax applicable as of today? I've seen different hotels charging different percentage.

I grew up in San Diego, Cal, been to Mexico many times, all the way to Yuctan, and to the US Virgens. First time to PR, i am a latin music fan, salsa to roc, so we are coming for las Fiestas de la Calle de San Sebastián. Couldn't get a room for that weekend, so off internet i rented a "condo" from Justino E. del Valle he calls El Catedral, i don't know him. Arrive: 10:05 p.m. Thu., Jan. 10, 2008 San Juan (SJU). Take a taxi to Old San Juan, he said it is $12-$14 per trip? He charges same 2 weeks as 1 month, so we'll stay for Noche de Galería. Depart SJU: 5:01 p.m. Thu., Feb. 7. I was in San Juan the middle portion of August and everyone was partying and crazy! Was it a holiday?

I have stayed at the Caribe Hilton before and I know there is some construction going on in the surrounding area. Is the construction still going on and, more importantly, is it affecting the hotel?

I am coming to PR (Condado area) tomorrow until Sunday. If any local wants to meet up and show me around that would be cool. Drinks and dinner on me.
