Has anyone attended the Galway Oyster Festival? If so, can you give me your impressions. A friend is planning a trip for a bunch of college buddies (mid-30s) and Ireland is in the running. We're wondering if planning our trip around the festival would make sense.
Hi,
I will be visiting Galway for the first time later this year (November) -- and I was wondering if anyone could provide recommendations for some good traditional Irish pubs. I have read some good things about Monroe's -- and I plan a visit there. Any other recommendations?
My friend and I will be visiting Galway on Thursday 3rd and and Friday 4th September. We've heard of Sally Longs and were wondering if there were any other rock pubs/clubs in the area?
Which hotel? Posted: Sun June 21, 2009 10:03 PM UTC
In Galway early July, 4 of us for two nights. Thinking of one of the following hotels.
Jurys Inn, Clayton Hotel or the Radisson Blu hotel. First two are roughly same price and there is only £25 per night extra for the Radisson. Any comments welcomed.
We are visiting Galway the beginning of April. What is the best transport to the Cliffs of Moher? Any other information on Galway would be very welcome.
Connemara Posted: Tue February 10, 2009 09:20 PM UTC
Hi all :-)
Will be heading down to Connemara for 4 days in a few days time and staying in the LetterFrack area. I will most certainly be doing the Connemara loop. Can anyone recommend any good pubs were the craic will be flowing that are not too much of a tourist hunt ( if there is such a thing ! ) with a wee bity of music :-). Also any recommendations on sightseeing and good food ;-)
it costs 4 Euros per day to park here (Long Term Car Park).
Although I'll go on a few day-trips from Galway (requiring a car), I probably won't drive somewhere *every* day that I'm there (I may want to leave the car parked for a couple of days at a time).
So, my question is: Can I purchase a multi-day ticket to park at one of the Long Term lots, or must I return to the car at least once a day to purchase/display a new 4-Euro ticket?
My friend and I will be in Galway this Feb. We are both young and would like to stay near town for "pub crawls". I found the Skeffington which looks promising but I would love some feedback/suggestions.
Also, would it be possible to visit a pub in Doolin for a night (easily)?
Don't know what the local transport is like. We are trying to decide between these 2 hotels. One is in the middle of town (House Hotel) and the other G Hotel is only slightly more in price but looks amazing, however it seems to be on the outskirts of the town. If anyone knows these places, could you suggest what is the better choice for 3 days as a base. We plan to go to Aran Island by ferry and Connemara. Thanks for any feedback.
My husband and I are going to Ireland in august. In Galway I have not been able to find a B&B in the center, not 10 min. walk away. We will arrive by car so there must be a parking. we need a decent twin room with private bathroom.
rugby weekend Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 12:51 AM UTC
Hi all, I'm one of a group of 18 welsh lads just returned from a weekend in Dublin where it was mad, there were more Welsh than Irish in Dublin and although we had a good time it would have been nice to meet some Irish people. It has been suggested that we try Galway the next time, what was it like there this weekend? would we get a good welcome in Galway??
OK, I know it's a weird request, but if you live in or are traveling to Galway in the near future could you stop by "SALLY LONG'S" and snap me a couple of pictures of the interior wall murrals ? I ment to do it myself but everytime I had the camera they were too busy, or visa versa. The "Last Supper" wall in particular is the greatest bit of Rock-n-Roll art I've ever seen.
We were just in Galway and there was a young man with a steel drum that he played on his lap. It looked like a large covered Chinese wok - does anyone know what this instrument is called and more importantly where one can be purchased.
We just got home from our trip to Galway and I'm still singing a Sawdoctor's tune under my breath. Iv'e been thinking of putting together a little compilation CD to listen to on my way to and from work. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a favorite "GALWAY" song.
So far I have
N17/Sawdoctors
Galway Bay/Clancy Brothers
Fairytale of New York/Pogues
The Galway Girl/Steve Earle
accomadations Posted: Thu September 27, 2007 04:29 AM UTC
There are so many places to chose from and it's so hard to decide which is the best. We would like the experience of a good bed and breakfast not too far from town. If you have any suggestions would appreciate the info. We are going to be there in early Nov.
Horse riding Posted: Tue August 7, 2007 08:19 PM UTC
I keep coming across references to horse riding on the island but am yet to find any info on how to arrange or book anything - anyone with any suggestions?
My friends and I have booked accommodations at the Lodges at Shannon Oaks near Galway for early November 2007. Has anyone stayed there before? The website lists that it is in Portumna, is that relatively close to Galway?
Hello my name is Nicholas Draney and I am a student at Brooks Institute of Photography in California. I am traveling to Ireland and specifically Galway with a group of students to do documentary photography. We are interested in documenting stories about people in Ireland. The culmination of these five weeks will be a student show and book. Is there anyone out in the Galway area that may have an interesting story or know of any story threads that would potentially be interesting to a group of photojournalists? I have been looking into the farming communities in Ireland and how the agricultural industry, which used to be the number one industry in Ireland, has fallen to third overall. Is there anyone out there that knows of any local farmers being affected by this? Maybe selling ground to development projects? Or perhaps families that can not afford to own and operate the land which has been in their families for generations. Any tips or contacts would help me immeasurably. Please email me if you think that you have any information that will help us in our endeavor. Thanks so much.
We'er visiting Galway in September and wondering if we need to bring in our own water. The landlady who we are to rent a cottage from assures us that "there is no water problem", and yet, there it is, splashed all over The Times.(no pun intended) Drinking water is one issue. It's fairly easy to drink bottled water, but should we worry about fresh vegetables or seafood ? We're going to be there during The Oyster Fest... Any info would be apreciated.
hey, im 21 year old female and myself and a few friends are lookin for anywhere at all ta stay for the weekend of the galway races? any help would be greatly appreciated
Ok, I think that I may have imagined this but are there two bead shops in the centre of Galway? I know one really exists (The Galway Bead Shop) but I had thought I'd walked past another..... If anyone knows please let me know exactly where the other one is. Or where else might be a good place to buy fine coloured wire. Thanks!
Does anyone have any suggestions of secondhand stores (clothing, household items etc) or markets (as above or fresh food/arts crafts etc) in Galway that are good. Thanks....
I have a question I was hoping someone from Galway might help me with.
I'm trying to identify a street musician I heard in Galway on a Sunday in May 2004.
My Polish musician friend and I listened to a street musician playing on an upright piano. He was playing mostly piano rags while we were listening.
He was on a pedestrian street with many restaurants in what seemed to be the old center of Galway, and brought the piano out of what I think was a restaurant, and played in front of a building made of gray stone, with a beautifully decorated entryway.
He had a hat on and was dressed in black, and had a red jacket as well, and a colorful striped woolen blanket on the ground.
On a photo I have, there is a sign that says that "Buon appetito & Cooke's" cafe and restaurants are around the corner. I don't see the sign of the actual restaurant he was playing in front of.
Does anyone know who this might be? Does he still play? Or the what the restaurant was where he was playing?
We'd like to know because he was our best memory of Galway, and we have a lousy recording of him playing something that we'd like to identify, and we'd like to identify him as well just so we know who he was.
Hi, just wondering if womeone can point me to a website which gives details on the public transport system in Galway (if one exists) or could indicate how easy/difficult it would be to travel from the city centre out to the Parkmore Business Park West (Ballybrit?). Thanks!
