Corcovado National Park Travel Forum

Hi,

I'm planning to travel to Corcovado National Park end of December.
Is it's possible to make a reservation (entrance fee, guide, tent) at the reservation office in Puerto Jiménez the day before to depart the following day?
Does anyone have an idea of the price for a guide. As I'm travelling on my own, do you think it will be easy to find a second person to do the trekking?

I am really wanting to do some hiking in Corcovado - ideally, from Carate out to the Sirena station to stay for 1 or 2 nights.

The problem is that I am likely to be travelling on my own. Does anyone know a good way of joining other people to do this, or if there are tours you can join?

I won't have a lot of time and will be there during high season, so I wasn't sure if just hanging around Puerto Jiminez hoping to meet people would work - I've heard you have to book permits well in advance.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We are planning a trip to Costa Rica in April of this year and would love to go off the beaten path to do some backpacking and hiking in Corcovado and also Tortuguero National Parks. I would not consider either of us as seasoned backpackers but have been recently (last year or so) been slowly rising to greater challenges (greater distance with more gear, etc.). I am hoping to do this as a sort of kick-off to my 50th year....am I being unrealistic? Any suggestions on what we should definitely not miss....we are planning on bringing our gear with us and would love to do some backpacking along the way. Thoughts anyone?

I am doing some trips to Costa Rica in March and will be hitting up the Osa Peninsula. My plan would be to get into Corcovado from Pto. Jimenez either via Carate or La Palma. Then hike to La Sirena, stay 2 nights probably, and hike out to San Pedrillo and continue onto one of the nice beach lodges on the Bahia Drake.

I would appreciate if you could answer any of these questions:
1) What is the best way from Jimenez to either Carate or La Palma?
2) Are guides easily acquirable in Jimenez or at the ranger stations and how far ahead do they need to be booked? And how much do they charge?
3) Can you camp anywhere in the park or only at the ranger stations and are there other lodging options within the park?
4) Can boats be chartered from La Sirena heading northwest towards Drake?
5) How physically/technically grueling is the hike out to Pedrillo?
6) Has anyone stayed at any of the lodges on the Drake bay and can you comment on your experiences?
7) What is a good local operator that can put together the whole thing?

I am traveling to CR in a couple of weeks and going to head down to Corcovado national park. Whats the view on either doing the full hike into the park and camping at sirena, or do you think you see just as much if you stay in Carate and do day hikes?

we're planning on going down to costa rica in a month and trekking through corcovado for a few days, but it's been impossible for me to contact anyone at the park to make reservations.

in your opinion, is it necessary for 2 self sufficient backpacker/campers to have advance reservations for a few days hiking in corcovado,or is it alright to just show up there at the ranger stations???
