Is there any way you can confirm that Andrew Coxon owns this chain of hotels in South Africa. I hope to travel there soon, and would like to look him up.

Johannesburg Real and perceived dangers of Johannesburg.
Posted: Mon May 11, 2009 06:52 PM UTC
Because of the perceived danger of Johannesburg, my wife is quite hesitant to venture beyond the security of our inn while we layover for a day. To alleviate her fears (and my desire to explore), I'm hoping to get information concerning the the real threat to safety in the Kempton Park, Montecasino and Sandton areas of Johannesburg. I'm sorry to say, I hear lots of bad things about Johannesburg, and now want to find more positive - and realistic - accounts of the city.

Johannesburg Airport to Gold Reef City/Apartheid Museum
Posted: Sun May 10, 2009 10:17 PM UTC
We have an overnight layover in Johannesburg in June. We fly in at 5pm. What is safest/inexpensive way to get to Gold Reef City. We're considering staying there so we can look around the next morning. Our flight out is at 7pm that night. How early would we need to leave to get to the airport?
Thanks

Johannesburg Overnight in Johannesburg
Posted: Tue April 14, 2009 08:50 PM UTC
I'm going to be in transit in Johannesburg for a day (noon one day until 7 PM the next) this summer. Where should I stay and what should I do? I like to wander around. Any shopping I do would be curios and souvenirs (not clothes I can get at home.) I won't have a car.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I want to stay somewhere halfway nice but not extravagant. I'd like to see a bit of the town without putting myself in harms way.

Johannesburg Purchasing a GPS navigation system @Johannesburg airport or near?
Posted: Wed March 11, 2009 01:14 PM UTC
We'll be visting South Africa in August and we'll be on a self drive. I've been looking for road maps of South Africa to install on my current Garmin GPS but they are all rather expensive. Also renting a GPS via the car rental company costs almost as much as a new one. So I was thinking of buying a cheap GPS when arriving in South Africa.
We will land in Johannesburg airport; is there a shop in the airport where you can buy these devices upon arrival? If not are there close to the airport (we leave directly for Sabie) shops where they sell GPS devices?

Johannesburg Johannesburg for a day.
Posted: Mon February 16, 2009 07:13 PM UTC
We'll be laying over in Johannesburg for a day on our way to Namibia. We have a four and five year and will be staying just north of OR Tambo Airport. Can anyone give some ideas as to what we can do? We're really not interested in any type of tour. Parks, water parks, amusement parks, ice skating, etc.

Johannesburg how safe is Johannesburg?
Posted: Mon December 1, 2008 04:57 AM UTC
How would you compare Johannesburg to Los Angeles?

I've heard that crime can range from pick pockets to kidnapping. Currently what's the situation? Is there anything out of the ordinary going on that travelers should worry about? What parts of the city should we strictly avoid?

I've read the page at the US state department website:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1008.html

I've never been to South Africa nor any part of Africa. So your thoughts and concerns will be of great help.

Johannesburg Nightclubs close to the Rosebank Hotel
Posted: Thu November 6, 2008 09:41 PM UTC
Was in Johanessburg on my first visit to South Africa for a wedding last weekend and stayed at the Rosebank Hotel, a very friendly three-four star affair with very tasty food, good rooms and an interactive lobby; one of its best points is the short walking distance to 'The Mall', which provides, well priced and large variety shopping/activities. Does anyone know of nightclubs close to the hotel, as i will be going back before years end.

Johannesburg 36 hours in Johannesburg
Posted: Tue November 4, 2008 08:41 PM UTC
I've got a layover in Johannesburg - a day at either end of a trip to Botswana. I get in fairly early in the morning, and I'm staying near the airport, at the Safari Club. I won't have a car, but I think there are tours that will pick us up there. Any recommendations for tours? Other things to do? Is it safe to wander around on our own?

Thanks

Johannesburg reliable taxi service for 5
Posted: Thu July 17, 2008 09:59 AM UTC
We are travelling to South Africa in mid-August and arrive at OR Tambo Int at about 10 at night. Rather than collect our hire car and drive in the dark, I would prefer to get a taxi to take us to where we are staying near Hartebeespoort Dam.

Can anyone recommend a reliable taxi that will meet us at the airport and drive us there (two adults and three children). What would be a reasonalbe charge?
