County Mayo Things to see/do between Galway and Belmullet
Posted: Fri July 27, 2007 06:03 PM UTC
I randomly ended up booking a bed in Belmullet for tomorrow night so will be driving up from Galway. So what should I stop and see or do on the way up or back? Any suggestions on somewhere to go horse riding? Thanks.

Clare Island Cars on Clare Island
Posted: Wed June 6, 2007 10:51 PM UTC
Spent a fabulous day on Clare Island and just curious about all the cars. Not that there were many, but is there a car ferry or are they just used on the island?
Also, I'm dying to know, what's with all the wrecked cars at Roonagh Quay? It's an eyesore.

Achill Island AudreySue
Posted: Fri September 9, 2005 05:27 PM UTC

I'm heading to Achill Island next weekend...loved reading all of your posts and seeing your photos! Spent a week in a thatched roof cottage in Donegal last fall and am renting a similar cottage on the island. I'm expecting to have bad hair all week and will pack rain gear. Flying into Shannon and will pick up groceries on the way. Any tips or advice for a September trip?

Barroe Gaeilge agus Gaelscoileanna i gContae Mhaigheo Oirthearach
Posted: Tue July 6, 2004 06:14 AM UTC
Are there many Gaelscoileanna (Irish-medium schools) in eastern Mayo? Do people in that part of Mayo use Irish at all in their everyday speech?

My Grandmother came from Barroe (Barr Rua) near Charlestown. From what I've learned she attended such a school, with all her subjects in Irish. She moved to the States early on around 18 or 19 and returned to Ireland several times before she died.

Go raibh maith agaibh.

Hi all,

I will be in Castlebar during the annual 4-days-walks (1-4 July) and am wondering if anyone can recommend some good B&Bs that are centrally located...

Thx in advance,

Achill Island Midges on Achill
Posted: Tue April 27, 2004 03:44 PM UTC
One rarely gets warnings/complaints about Midges in Ireland, but at least in areas with blanket bog (like Achill Island), they must be around.

Is my guess correct, that the problem is not as bad as in the Scottish Highlands? I'll be on Achill in July and should there be a warm and calm evening, it'd be great to be able to sit outside the cottage without having to fear Scottish-style air raids.

I'm a bit careful after my last year's experience from South Uist. People told me there weren't any midges on the Outer Hebrides, and if there had been (strictly theroetically speaking...), then it'd be always windy enough to keep them from flying. WELL, we had a hot week with temperatures well above 25 Celsius and NO wind...flat out calm... and GUESS WHO was VISITING US??? GRRRRRR HOW I HATE THOSE MIDGES!!!!
