Oslo Oslo to Bergen
Posted: Tue March 25, 2008 05:30 PM UTC
This is a variation of several questions posted here: My son and I are going to Stockholm and then Oslo in early June. We have four nights in Oslo. Didn't realize how far Bergen is from Oslo! Can someone tell me how long the train trip is? I guess we'd have to spend one night in Bergen? Do you know if there are bus trips? Maybe we could go at least half-way to see the scenery....My father was born in Oslo, we are very excited to finally go. Funds are very limited.....
Thanks for any help.

Oslo bring car seat along for 4.5 year old?
Posted: Tue March 18, 2008 01:14 AM UTC
Me again -- coming in may with a tall 4.5 year old whom we keep in a front-facing harnessed car seat here. IT would be FAR too cumbersome to bring along, but I could bring a booster, or invest in a smaller profile car seat (which would cost about $150 and likely give us only a few months use at best due to height of top harness strap)
What do Norwegians do with older kids -- are we going to need this on public transport, or would I be better off just bringing a backless booster for the plane and for public transport? Or do Norwegians typically just use the seats for kids older than toddlers?

Oslo (silly?) question about bugs in Bergen ?
Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 04:35 PM UTC
Hello

I am quite used to mosquitos and black flies since I was born on the north shores of the St-lawrence river, in Quebec, Canada....

But my girlfriend is really not! And I am wondering about going on a one-day trip from OSLO to BERGEN (via plane)... will there be bugs in and around town?

I really don't exactly know which other place to visit while in Oslo (july 14-21), I figured Bergen might be interesting... maybe higher north? To lapland maybe? Is is worth the trip to visit torso???

Or south maybe to Copenhague or gottenborg?

How about boat cruise (less than 1h please)... anything in particular I should take a look at? I don't suppose there is an hydrofoil in Oslo?

thanks for any help in planning my trip :)

Oslo visiting OSLO in july
Posted: Wed March 5, 2008 12:27 PM UTC
Hello

I am trying to choose between OSLO and Coppenhague as my next vacation destination...

Oslo is tempting because I like Jarlsberg cheese (like Wallace & Gromit, I plan my cheese vacation!) but I have heard rumors that this is an expansive city with the prices in restaurants being very high for simple dish like pizza and drinking is prohibitive!

Are there any "locals" here who could shed light on this? Is it truly that much expansive to dine in Oslo? The hotel as included a breakfast so there are only lunch and dinner left to worry about and of course I like to go to a place where there are good cheese dishes (do you have any recommandations????? favorite dishes???)

thanks and happy travelling

Oslo Norway in a Nutshell, staying in bergen: do I want Os, Oslo S, or Oslo Lufthaven Gard station
Posted: Thu February 28, 2008 12:54 AM UTC
Just to be clear, you are both saying that it's o.k. (if a bit much) to do the entire Oslo-Bergen Norway in a Nutshell in one day, just not the night train back, right?

And I want to grab the minipris tickets right away, thanks! But which station do I want?

Thanks so much for all the food suggestions-

Oslo Oslo- Bergen via Norway in a Nutshell; back next day or stay Bergen?
Posted: Tue February 26, 2008 02:17 AM UTC
Hi again -- We will probably do as the wise FletteMette suggested, taking a one way NIN from Oslo- Bergen on 5/12. It seems nicer to stay the night in Bergen and then return, rather than a night train after all that travel. It looks like I can get minipris tickets for the return trip and save some money.

I will be with partner, elderly parents, and a cheerful 4 1/2 year old -- a few questions:
1) are we unwise to do it in one day and land in Bergen that night?
2) advice on comfortable, quiet, not-too-expensive accommodations?
3) Would you recommend staying 2 nights in Bergen so that we have one day to see Bergen, and then leave the next morning to arrive back in oslo (just in time to fly home to U.S. next day
4) are minipris tickets for a particular kind of seat, or just cheap tickets for people who plan ahead?
5) any advice on food (veggie) in Bergen, or on where we go in oslo to prepare a nice basket of cheeses, fruits, bread or something for the trip?

Many thanks-

Oslo norway in a nutshell from oslo: stay in bergen or flam? do 1-way from oslo and take day train back?
Posted: Fri February 1, 2008 01:02 AM UTC
Hi- I'm coming to Oslo in May and want to do the Norway in a Nutshell thing, but I will be traveling with a 4 year old and elderly parents. A couple of questions:
1)the Oslo roundtrip package costs almost K2000, and includes a night train back to Oslo. Could we book a day train on our own and get back at almost the same cost?
2) If we have have 1-2 days to spend somewhere, what are the advantages of spending that time in Flam vs. Bergen (esp. w a little one). Any recommendations of lodging at either place?
3) any recommendations for vegetarian food in either location or while traveling greatly appreciated, thanks!

Oslo Please help in identifying an Oslo landmark
Posted: Wed December 19, 2007 07:48 PM UTC
I recently visited Oslo and took a couple of pictures of a nice building visible from the harbour, but have been unable to find out what the building is, or the name of that particular area of Oslo. If anyone can help I'd be most grateful. The pictures are here:

Oslo Choosing a hotel: munch, terminus, spectrum?
Posted: Fri November 30, 2007 01:58 AM UTC
Hello helpful VT people: I am trying to decide between Hotel Munch, Terminus, and Spectrum, all THON hotels included for my conference in May. I will be traveling with a partner and 4 year old, and will need 3 beds (not 2) and a reasonably quiet place. Conference activities seem to be mostly at the "Blindern Campus" (which i believe is pretty accessible by subway). Any advice as to which might be most convenient, comfortable, quiet, other advantages? Many thanks.

Oslo Oslo in December - what to do?
Posted: Wed November 28, 2007 07:13 PM UTC
Coming to Oslo for a long weekend in Mid-December.
I found a possibility to take a Christmas cruise to the museums and I have read there are some Christmas Markets.
What else we could and should do?
I suppose the "fjords" are too far away from Oslo...?
I have a baby (6 months) with us. Any suggestions on restaurants which take baby carriages inside or at least the baby!
Is it easy to explore Oslo with those baby carriages (public transportation, shops, museums etc) and are there places to change diapers? How about breast feeding, is it normal in public places?

Thank You in advance!

Hi! Silly question maybe, but is there anyplace in Oslo that you'd recommend for buying music? Wide selection, new releases, reasonable prices? (It seems like these places are getting harder and harder to find.) Thanks!

Oslo oslo in may with a 4 year old/vegetarian
Posted: Sat November 3, 2007 01:52 AM UTC
Hello- I am lucky to be traveling to Oslo in May and would like to bring my 4 year old. I would appreciate any help on the following, trying to avoid questions which can be answered in books! This is my first and in all likelihood only chance to travel to Scandinavia -

1) My conference is taking place near the Thon hotel Terminus -- any reviews of it or suggestions for alternatives? Is it possible in Norwegian hotels to get separate beds for the adults and still another small bed for a child, or is this just too weird?

2) any hints for vegetarian dining? I hear it is difficult.

3) if you had 3-4 days to yourself in Oslo, what might be your choices for day trips by train -- Bergen, trying to fit in Sweden, etc. as I will not likely be back in this area? And re trains, any suggestions about passes vs. just paying for individual trips? Same question for inter-Oslo travel

4. Any suggestions for having a nice trip with a child in Oslo or Scandinavia generally -- kid-friendly places, etc? I have no sense of how welcome children might be at my conference or at the social activities.

Thanks very much.

Oslo hotel/hostel in oslo
Posted: Mon August 27, 2007 02:02 PM UTC
Hi All
I am going to Oslo with 8 other lads for the weekend of the 7th sept. I am looking ofr somwhere to stay and wondered if there are any lively hostels in the city or would it be better to book a hotel. We find that hostels can be easier to meet people in some places but that has to be weighed against the level of accomodation.
All help appreciated!!
