Posted: Tue July 8, 2008 03:50 AM UTC
My husband left a jacket at security in the Oslo airport - we are looking for a way to get it back to Seattle. The jacket has been located, they have it at lost and found. We are wondering if any kind souls traveling through the Oslo airport, then to the US, might be willing to bring it to the States and mail it to us? We'd be happy to reimburse the mailing expenses, provide you with our deepest thanks, and/or do something for you that might be of value to you?

Please let us know soon if you might be willing to help!!

Gratefully,

Oslo Electric Cars in Oslo ??? vs Petrol cost
Posted: Tue May 27, 2008 10:21 AM UTC
When I was in Oslo many years ago I recall seeing a surprising number of electric cars.

Can anybody update me as to the numbers or % of road users.

Maybe there is a website that can give more info.
Who manufactures them ? There must be some great opportunity for putting that business model out to the rest of the world.

Government subsidies ? Cost of electricity ? ..... the topic is very intrigueing - and by making the right investment I can profit enough to go visit there :-)

Oslo My One Day in Oslo!
Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 04:06 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,

I am planning one day in Oslo (of course, a cruise visit) and the ship will be in port from 9am – 5pm.

I would like to visit the Vigeland Sculpture Garden, and also stroll the harbor area of Aker Brygge to Karl Johans Gate and do a little shopping in this area. On my walking tour, I’d like to include City Hall, the Royal Palace and Olso Cathedral. Finally, I’d also like to check out the Akershus Fortress and Castle.

Sometime during the day, I’d also like to plan a lunch stop at an inexpensive café, but one that has good local food and a nice view. Outdoor would be preferred, but I am flexible. Has anyone heard of the café Vin Og or have an opinion of it? Actually, I don’t even mind taking food to go, I love seafood, and I have heard that seafood is available to “buy” in some outdoor stalls.

I will not have local currency when I first get off the ship, so will I need to find an ATM or can I purchase public transportation in Euros or using a credit card? I love walking and don’t mind walking between sites (if the distance is reasonable) so that’s an option too.

Can anyone suggest a good itinerary to pack this all in -in one (relatively non-stressful) day?

Thanks very much,
Jeana

Oslo airport to thon hotel munch: will a bus get me closer?
Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 01:09 AM UTC
looks like the train would leave us about a kilometre from the hotel, more than I'd like for a tired four year old -- the hotel site says a bus is nearby, but I can't figure out which this is. On the visit oslo site, there is mentioned an airport express bus and flubussekpressen. I can't make head or tails out of the latter, and the route for the former shows it starting at the airport and ending at the SAS hotel. Can anyone advise how I can get close to the Thon Hotel Munch from the airport, without using a taxi?

many thanks

Oslo MS Innvik
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 02:05 PM UTC
I'm looking for accommodations in Oslo after arriving via the train from Bergen and the MS Innvik, a former ferry now converted to a hotel and theatre looks close to the train station and a little funky. Is the area it is located in a safe place to walk around (Lonely Planet says you have to cross a busy highway and a bleak parking lot to get to it)? Any opinions on this unusual place? Thanks for any help on this.

Oslo Short trip from 12-May until 15-May

Hi,

I'm coming to Oslo to follow a conference on 13 and 14 May. I'll be able to visit the city the 12th and 14th afternoon. What would you recommend for such a short stay? Any "must do's"? Any locals who wants to be my guide (in return for some pints?) is also always welcome ;-)

Oslo grocery stores and veggie food near Thon Hotel Munch
Posted: Fri April 25, 2008 02:14 AM UTC
Hi- Can anyone give us up-to-date help identifying grocery stores easily accessed by Thon Hotel Munch (or via transit from there)? Also cheap (as possible, anyway) veggie food, esp. Indian or Italian? Or any other tips about keeping food costs down. We will also be in Bergen (thon Hotel Brygge) so any of the same info for Bergen most appreciated.
Also, do you know if it's true that some hotels will let you pack some breakfast to take away (paying, of course, not stealing)...is this a reasonably good way to get some food, or is one better off shopping?
takk!

Oslo Ski jump tower Holmenkollen
Posted: Thu April 17, 2008 02:44 PM UTC
Hi,

In the beginning of June we're going to Oslo. I've read that the Holmenkollen ski jump tower will be torn down by the end of the Summer 2008. Have the works started already or will they have started when we're there? And is the museum closed also then?

I just need to lay my head and really am not bothered too much about facilities. Can anybody help me with some suggestions? I would prefer a place close to the bus station for ryanair flights. Oslo Oslo to Bergen
Posted: Tue March 25, 2008 05:30 PM UTC
This is a variation of several questions posted here: My son and I are going to Stockholm and then Oslo in early June. We have four nights in Oslo. Didn't realize how far Bergen is from Oslo! Can someone tell me how long the train trip is? I guess we'd have to spend one night in Bergen? Do you know if there are bus trips? Maybe we could go at least half-way to see the scenery....My father was born in Oslo, we are very excited to finally go. Funds are very limited.....
Thanks for any help.

Oslo bring car seat along for 4.5 year old?
Posted: Tue March 18, 2008 01:14 AM UTC
Me again -- coming in may with a tall 4.5 year old whom we keep in a front-facing harnessed car seat here. IT would be FAR too cumbersome to bring along, but I could bring a booster, or invest in a smaller profile car seat (which would cost about $150 and likely give us only a few months use at best due to height of top harness strap)
What do Norwegians do with older kids -- are we going to need this on public transport, or would I be better off just bringing a backless booster for the plane and for public transport? Or do Norwegians typically just use the seats for kids older than toddlers?

Oslo (silly?) question about bugs in Bergen ?
Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 04:35 PM UTC
Hello

I am quite used to mosquitos and black flies since I was born on the north shores of the St-lawrence river, in Quebec, Canada....

But my girlfriend is really not! And I am wondering about going on a one-day trip from OSLO to BERGEN (via plane)... will there be bugs in and around town?

I really don't exactly know which other place to visit while in Oslo (july 14-21), I figured Bergen might be interesting... maybe higher north? To lapland maybe? Is is worth the trip to visit torso???

Or south maybe to Copenhague or gottenborg?

How about boat cruise (less than 1h please)... anything in particular I should take a look at? I don't suppose there is an hydrofoil in Oslo?

thanks for any help in planning my trip :)

Oslo visiting OSLO in july
Posted: Wed March 5, 2008 12:27 PM UTC
Hello

I am trying to choose between OSLO and Coppenhague as my next vacation destination...

Oslo is tempting because I like Jarlsberg cheese (like Wallace & Gromit, I plan my cheese vacation!) but I have heard rumors that this is an expansive city with the prices in restaurants being very high for simple dish like pizza and drinking is prohibitive!

Are there any "locals" here who could shed light on this? Is it truly that much expansive to dine in Oslo? The hotel as included a breakfast so there are only lunch and dinner left to worry about and of course I like to go to a place where there are good cheese dishes (do you have any recommandations????? favorite dishes???)

thanks and happy travelling

Oslo Norway in a Nutshell, staying in bergen: do I want Os, Oslo S, or Oslo Lufthaven Gard station
Posted: Thu February 28, 2008 12:54 AM UTC
Just to be clear, you are both saying that it's o.k. (if a bit much) to do the entire Oslo-Bergen Norway in a Nutshell in one day, just not the night train back, right?

And I want to grab the minipris tickets right away, thanks! But which station do I want?

Thanks so much for all the food suggestions-

Oslo Oslo- Bergen via Norway in a Nutshell; back next day or stay Bergen?
Posted: Tue February 26, 2008 02:17 AM UTC
Hi again -- We will probably do as the wise FletteMette suggested, taking a one way NIN from Oslo- Bergen on 5/12. It seems nicer to stay the night in Bergen and then return, rather than a night train after all that travel. It looks like I can get minipris tickets for the return trip and save some money.

I will be with partner, elderly parents, and a cheerful 4 1/2 year old -- a few questions:
1) are we unwise to do it in one day and land in Bergen that night?
2) advice on comfortable, quiet, not-too-expensive accommodations?
3) Would you recommend staying 2 nights in Bergen so that we have one day to see Bergen, and then leave the next morning to arrive back in oslo (just in time to fly home to U.S. next day
4) are minipris tickets for a particular kind of seat, or just cheap tickets for people who plan ahead?
5) any advice on food (veggie) in Bergen, or on where we go in oslo to prepare a nice basket of cheeses, fruits, bread or something for the trip?

Many thanks-

Oslo norway in a nutshell from oslo: stay in bergen or flam? do 1-way from oslo and take day train back?
Posted: Fri February 1, 2008 01:02 AM UTC
Hi- I'm coming to Oslo in May and want to do the Norway in a Nutshell thing, but I will be traveling with a 4 year old and elderly parents. A couple of questions:
1)the Oslo roundtrip package costs almost K2000, and includes a night train back to Oslo. Could we book a day train on our own and get back at almost the same cost?
2) If we have have 1-2 days to spend somewhere, what are the advantages of spending that time in Flam vs. Bergen (esp. w a little one). Any recommendations of lodging at either place?
3) any recommendations for vegetarian food in either location or while traveling greatly appreciated, thanks!
