rio or iguacu Posted: Wed June 25, 2008 02:53 PM UTC
We are arriving in the morning in Rio - 5 nights altogether before we go to Manaus to start a cruise. Should we spend all the time in Rio, 3 nights Rio and 2 nights Iguacu or 4 nights Rio 1 night Iguacu just seeing the Argentinian side of the falls?
Appreciate any advice

Is 2.5 days in Rio enough? Posted: Thu June 19, 2008 04:15 PM UTC
Hi,
I am planning my trip in South America. Right now I am flying in and out of Rio, so that I have 2.5 in Rio. Is that enough to have a good look around?
I might have the option of 1 more day, which in turn would cut my days in Iguazu Falls from 3 to 2?
Do you have any recommendation?
Cheers.

6 nights in Rio Posted: Mon June 9, 2008 05:05 AM UTC
I posted before. I won a trip to Rio in August. We will be staying in the Sofitel Hotel. We will be part of a group of 100 and most of our itinerary is pre-planned.
I love Latin American dancing and therefor Rio is perfect for me.
What should I take with me in the form of clothes?
I have fear of hights. Will I be able to go up sugar loaf and cristo redentor?

Taxi Fare from GIG to Sheraton Rio Hotel and Resort Posted: Wed June 4, 2008 09:28 PM UTC
What is the "appropriate" generic taxi fare from GIG (Rio International Airport) to the Sheraton Rio Hotel and Resort?? We have heard all kinds of "quotes" and would like to hear from some "experts" who have actually used this type of service. Also, were you satisfied with the taxi, regret it, recommend some other type of transfer service, etc.
Look forward to hearing comments.
Thanks.

Weekend trip from Rio to Foz de Iguacu Posted: Mon May 26, 2008 10:46 PM UTC
Hey,
I am traveling to Rio from July 17-Aug 15 with a volunteer program. We have weekends free and I would love to go see the Iguazu Falls while I am down there. I am sure this question has been posted several times at least but I was hoping someone might like to answer it once again.
How much would you expect to pay for a weekend, 2 nights, there? (flight, hotel, etc.). I am a college student so I don't need to stay in a nice place but I'd also like to stay in a safe, clean place. I've read GOL is the discount airline? Any input on flights? What about hotels?
Also, I don't know any of the other volunteers with my program as they come from all over the world so I am unsure if I will have anyone accompanying me. Is it safe to go it alone? Anyone else out there interested in going?
Lastly, how soon do I need to book this? Obviously the sooner the better, but would it be unreasonable to book it say a week in advance, once I get to Brazil and see if any other volunteers in my group want to join?
Thanks,
Tony

Samba City Posted: Sat May 24, 2008 12:21 AM UTC
I'm taking a group of 10 to Rio at the end of June and am wondering if going to Samba City is worth it. Is it even open? It's not mentioned in most guidebooks, and their website says it's been open since 2004, but that doesn't give me a lot of confidence. I've been in Rio almost every year since then and had never heard of it. I'd love to hear from someone who's been there. Our only day to go would be on a Sunday or Monday. Thanks.

Safe hotel near airport or near bus terminal to reach Buzios the following morning Posted: Wed May 21, 2008 03:10 PM UTC
Hi,
My husband, one year old daughter, and me are arriving in Rio at the end of June at around 9pm. We are headed out to Buzios for a few days and on our way back will spend a few days in Rio sightseeing. Because we arrive so late we will have to spend the night in Rio and leave for Buzios the following morning. Any tips on cheap/clean/nice hotels near the international airport or near the bus station so that it will ease our transfer out to Buzios. We love to travel but now with a little one we try to make it easy for her. Also, we are students so we are on a budget but safety and cleanliness is our major concern. Or, do you recommend that we book a hotel in Ipanema take a taxi out there and the following morning a taxi to the bus station? Also, what would be a good way for us to get to Buzios from Rio? we are trying to avoid paying for a taxi, are local buses ok? I see that the difference is quiet substantive if one takes a bus from the bus station. Also, anyone can recommend a good bus company or shuttle service??? And, my last question: Is it a good idea to go to Buzios during the end of June and early July? will we be able to go swimming or will the weather be too chilly?
Thank you so much in advance.

Cheap flights to Rio Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 07:15 PM UTC
Hey there fellow travelers,
A friend of mine is in desperate need of a low fare to Rio. He's only traveling in August but wants to book his flight as soon as possible. I've recently heard of some companies doing low cost travels to Rio from Spain. Does anyone know anything about that? He's Portuguese and is looking for the lowest possible fares departing from any neighbor countries (Spain,France,...) to Rio, Brazil. Any tips on the cheapest way to get there will be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Rui

Accommodation in Rio de Janeiro Posted: Thu May 1, 2008 09:55 PM UTC
I am looking for accommodation during Carnival 2009. I'm on a budget so have been looking at hostels. I'm not sure of the best place to base myself. I know that Lapa is close to all the action but am wary that it could be too loud and am worried about safety. I have found a cheap hostel in Botafogo but haven't heard much about this area, is it safe? Would it be too far away from the Sambadrome? Lastly, I was thinking of staying in Copacabana or Impanema but these are further away from the sambadrome - how is the transport with regards to cost and safety. Hopefully somebody out there has some good advice.
Thanks

best beach wedding location(s) Posted: Fri April 4, 2008 06:22 PM UTC
I'm getting married in Buzios too! I unfortunately will not get the opportunity to see the area before we travel for the big event, so this makes planning difficult. I am hoping to get some good suggestions on which of the many beaches would be best suited for a small ceremony (no chairs or big props or anything, just small, quiet and secluded preferably) - and does one need to get a permit or permission of any kind to gather a small group (30ish) at the beach for an hour?
Also, I'm looking for restaurant suggestions for rehersal dinner and for dinner after the wedding. Any place that would be great for groups? The more local and traditional the cuisine the better...
Thank you for your help! And if anyone knows of other places to look for this kind of information it is greatly appreciated! I can't wait to go!

How are Cariocas to American travellers? Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 02:56 AM UTC
I was just wondering how Cariocas (Rio locals) are towards American travellers... not tourists, with their fanny packs and flashing cameras every 5 seconds... but younger travellers? Do a lot of Cariocas speak English or should I brush up on my Portuguese? :-D
Thanks!!

Havainas!! Where and how much? Posted: Fri March 28, 2008 02:29 AM UTC
Hello! I am coming to Rio in November...
I want to bring home a few pairs of Havaianas for myself and friends for gifts. I know they are made in Brazil... This probably sounds silly, but how much are they there, cheaper than in the U.S ($10-30+USD or so)? Are there a lot of knock-offs (which I don't want) or are they pretty easy to spot? Are they easy to find or only sold in a few places??
Thanks xoxo

A very clean, sanitary place please, for this germ-aphobe :-)
How much can I expect to spend?
Thanks a ton, kisses, Julie

Apartments/Hotels in Impanema Posted: Tue March 18, 2008 04:40 AM UTC
Is it better to rent an apartment in Ipanema or stay in a hotel. what are the pros and cons. we would like to spend $100-$150 a night and split that. Any recommendations on how to find a nice apartment if that is the way to go?
