| Tromsø | Classy restaurant in Tromso, Whale watching, camping... Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 01:37 PM UTC
Hi everyone! I am traveling with my wife to Tromso in about two weeks. We are driving and camping in Finland and Norway. We have decided to stop for our anniversary at Tromso. Can someone recommend a classy/romantic restaurant for a young couple for their anniversary dinner? It would be great to eat something Norwegian/Scandinavian/local traditional or excuisite food like reindeer or such...
Also, we would be very interested to go for a whale watching trip. So what is the best quality/price rate that we can find somewhere closeby there? Do we have to book in advance? We found priceranges from 780 - 900 NOK, so is that the normal rate? How about the best camping place there? Have to book in advance? Rates? If someone has even part of the questions answered, i would highly appreciate it! THANKS FOLKS! Jussi |

| Tromsø | Bus and Coastal streamer journey through Aurora lands Posted: Wed February 20, 2008 07:19 PM UTC
I read from the www.destinasjontromso.no site, one of the suggested activities is to take a bus through the lyngen alps and return by Hurtigruten from Skjervoy to Tromso.
I went to the www.177troms.no website however there is no english. Could anyone advise which bus I should take to Skjervoy? how long would the journey take? if there is any recommended schedule/time of the day I should start this journey so I can take the 7:45pm express boat from Skjervoy back to Tromso. I cannot see the price on the hurtigruten site. does anyone also know the approx. price? Thanks in advance! |

| Tromsø | Tromsø- accommodation and guiding- SOS!!! Fun International Students!!! Posted: Fri January 18, 2008 09:56 AM UTC
Hi Everybody in Tromsø!!!!
We are a group of international students ( 4 people at the moment) who are studying at Østfold University College in Halden, Norway. We plan travelling to Tromsø in the middle of February. As nobody of us has been to Tromsø before, we would appreciate any advice on cheap accommodation and guiding. I tried to contact the University in Tromsø and send them a request where I asked if it is possible to stay 3,4 nights in the Student dormitory and how much would it be. I did not get any reply, however. The hotels that are posted on virtualtouristwebsite are seemed to be very expensive. The student hostel is quite far from the Center of Tromsø, in my opinion. If not accommodation, than probably guiding is something you could help us with. Lets say 2, 3 hours of guiding in Tromsø where you would show us the most famous sights and the places where the students spend their time. We will be glad to invite you to Halden, in return, where you could stay with us for some days. Also, I am looking for a network of students in Tromsø, where I could meet some from Tromsø University and chat to them. Send me a link please, if you know it. |

| Tromsø | Help me find a 'lost' friend Posted: Fri January 11, 2008 11:16 AM UTC
Hello!
My name is Eddie and I live in Sydney Australia. The reason I am writing is that I am looking out for an old friend with whom I have lost contact with and hope to find someone who can help me. I hope someone can try to help me. So here is my story! When I was a teenager - 13 years old - and almost 40 years ago, I had a penfriend who lived in Tromso, Norway. I am trying to locate her. She is likely to be of a similar age - so 53 years - and her name is Lisa Oynes. I am not entirely sure I got the spelling exactly right for the surname as I don't have a Norwegian keyboard. However it is close enough. Can you help me?? I hope you will write back and let me know either way. My address is eddoch@hotmail.com Take care and thanks! Eddie |

| Tromsø | Direct Flight? Posted: Fri September 28, 2007 12:34 PM UTC
Hi, ok I have never actually yet been on a plan, so I'm not experienced with airlines websites, I hope to be going to Tromso in late March. From what I have been reading I thought to get to Tromso from London standstead I would have to get a connecting flight at Oslo. On the norwegian.no website though there seems to be a flight straight to Tromso that is cheaper than the connecting one. Am I reading this correctly?

| Tromsø | Few days in Tromso Posted: Tue April 17, 2007 05:42 PM UTC
Thanks to everybody whose given info on the forum; invaluable. I'm heading up to Tromso from 13/6 to 19/6 and doing the Midnight Sun Marathon on the 16th, so I have a couple of days spare either side of it.
I guess I'll spend one walking around Tromso, and was wondering about the other days. Sommaroy sounds good for a trip, while I've also heard the bus ride to Fauske in the south is very scenic. Also, is it okay to camp out in any of those locations, and is a visa card better than traveller's cheques? |

| Tromsø | Norwegian courses in Tromsø Posted: Fri March 2, 2007 11:36 AM UTC
Hello there,
I moving to Norway in the summer, either to Bergen or Tromsø. I have been learning Norwegian for a few years, so my Norwegian isn't too bad but I would definitely like to go on an advanced Norwegian course in Norway to help me become fluent. I would prefer to move to Tromsø than Bergen, but won't feel confident enough to do this if can't take an advanced Norwegian course in Tromsø. I have looked and there doesn't seem to be any Norwegian courses available in Tromsø. The Folkeuniversitet courses look perfect, but they don't seem to offer Norwegian courses in Tromsø, only in bigger cities like Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim etc. Does anyone know of any other organisations in Tromsø that offer advanced Norwegian courses? Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks Stuart |

| Tromsø | Where to stay? Posted: Tue February 6, 2007 08:19 AM UTC
Myself and a couple of friends are flying into Tromso for the last week of March. The plan is to try and do some cross-country skiing (we're not very good at the moment!) and maybe some winter walking.
Ideally we'd like to stay out of Tromso in a self-catering hut/cabin (with heating!), but not too expensive. We plan to hire a car... Has anyone on here got any recommendations of places to stay (specific, or just areas), or any winter must-dos. Cheers, Helena |

Kiruna vs Tromso
Posted: Mon January 08 21:56:49 2007 UTC Hi all, I am working in Linkoping, Sweden at the moment and am desparately keen for an arctic weekend experience. Would you recommend Kiruna or Tromso? The main things I would like to experience are Northern lights (if possible), dog sledding and perhaps learn a little about lappland people, history etc. Tromso appears to have more activities, but then there's the ice hotel in Kiruna. What is your opinion? Thanks |

| Tromsø | Things To Do Posted: Fri October 20, 2006 09:58 PM UTC
Hi Everyone
First time in the VT forums. I usually use the LP thorn tree but the Tromsø advice on this site is much better. I am planning to take my girlfriend over to Tromsø for her birthday from 7th dec 2006 until 13th Dec 2006. Main reason for the visit is of course the Aurora Borealis...We would love some hiking but realise it will be artic conditions so will have to return to norway for this. Can any one recommend something to do in or around Tromsø. I like the sound of Sommarøy. I looked at pictures too and it looks breathtaking. Do you think 2/3 nights is too long there? I want to be able to relax but would like to have walks and maybe a bar to visit. On her birthday 11th dec I want to treat her to a nice meal and was wondering if Tromsø would be best for this or another town close-ish by? Thanks in advance for your help neilos |

| Tromsø | Whale Watching and Aurora Borealis Posted: Tue September 19, 2006 08:30 PM UTC
Hello,
My girlfriend and I are planning to travel to Tromso, last week of October. We are planning to stay for two nights max. and we would very much like to go for a whale safari as well as seeing the northern lights. Our main concern is to go to the whale safari. Would there be daily whale safari tours from Tromso and is this a good time to see the whales? In addition, could anyone recommend a cosy but not too pricey place to stay? Is it going to be dark by that time of the year over there? How much sunlight would we get for the whale safari and the trip? Thanks a lot for your help... |

| Tromsø | Travelling to North Norway Posted: Tue September 12, 2006 09:23 PM UTC
Hi,
First let me give a wee background note: I used to have a different nickname, but the account couldn't be signed in to anymore, and the password request function didn't help as at the same time the related mailbox got defunct. So I figured signing up again was the best option :) Anyway, I am planning to try to realise my arctic dreams! After years of dreaming to move as far north as I could, time to try to achieve it hey. So next month I am making a trip to North Norway for a week of jobhunting. I looked around a bit and the most cost-effective way to fly from UK to Tromsø was through Ryanair from London Stansted to Oslo, then a second flight from Oslo to Tromsø using Norwegian.no All together it'd cost just below 200£ going and return in economy, taxes included. Does anyone know if there's a cheaper way to make the trip, or is this about as cost-effective as it gets? Other than that, does anyone know the best employment agencies and hotels to visit? I don't speak Norwegian very well so that could be a difficulty, also Norway seems not to have many companies that need multilingual staff. I would hope for one of those rare vacancies in a local company, but otherwise I'd be happy to go for a hotel or tourism-industry job. I speak Dutch, English, French and German, so hopefully that will help a bit to increase my chances. Have worked in callcenters, administration and billing so far. Does anyone have any hints where to start looking? Preferably in Tromsø, although other northern regions (Trondheim-Finnmark-Svalbard) would also be okay. |
