| Lisbon | Things to do in Lisbon. Posted: Sun July 20, 2008 11:44 PM UTC
Hi everyone,
I will be in Lisbon this September, and was wondering where are the places to go. I am looking at going to the Castelo in the city, but was wondering where else to go to experience Lisbon.I have been to the Jeronimos and other monuments around the Belem area, so I am looking at checking out the inner city and would like some advice. Thanks! Also, is the Cristo Rei open? Every time I have wanted to go there it has been closed for renovations! |

| Lisbon | Information Posted: Sat July 19, 2008 09:32 PM UTC
I am staying in the Algarve in September. I would like to visit Lisbon but I only want to drive as far as the outskirts of Lisbon (perhaps 30 minutes or so away) and then get either a train or bus into the city. Can you suggest a suitable place to drive to where we can get a suitable connection into the city please? Somewhere just off a main road would be good. It would be good if we could see a bit of the countryside too.

| Lisbon | Please comment on this itinerary Posted: Tue July 15, 2008 02:31 PM UTC
My wife and I leave shortly for Portugal and I would like to get some opinions on this itinerary. We are interested in seeing and experiencing authentic Portugal. We appreciate comfortable lodgings, good food (especially seafood) and wine.
- 3 nights staying with a friend in Mafra. From here, we will explore Lisbon and Sintra. - 2 nights in the pousada at Obidos. Visit Nazare for here. - 1 night in the pousada at Coimbra. Visit Fatima. - 2 nights in Porto. - final night in Lisbon After doing a bit more research, I am told that Obidos is charming but crowded with tourists. I've also learned that Coimbra deserves a bit more time. I am planning on changing it to 1 night in Obidos and 2 nights in Coimbra. Or, I am considering just doing a day trip to Obidos and staying 3 nights in Coimbra. Is there enough in Coimbra to keep us interested for 3 nights? Any suggestions for changes? Perhaps a night in the upper Douro? |

| Lisbon | Can anyone tell me about Mafra? Posted: Sat July 12, 2008 08:58 PM UTC
We are visiting Portugal later this month and staying with some friends in Mafra. Unfortunately, my friend's English is limited and my Portuguese is non-existent. I trust her to show me around and I will place myself in her hands but I was wondering if I could a third party description of the place. What should I expect?

| Lisbon | 4 hours in Lisbon :( Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 04:05 PM UTC
Yes, I know...4 hours is not enough to even scratch the surface of Lisbon, but 4 hours is all I've got. I'll be on a cruise next month, and we arrive around 8am, and for some stupid reason I can't understand, we set sail at 1pm. Bearing in mind it will take time to get on and off the ship, that leaves me with 4 hours at the most.
So, what should I do? I don't want to take one of the cruise tours as they are expensive and cram as many sights in as possible, and I hate travelling in groups. I'd rather go for a walk somewhere on my own. Looking at the map and browsing the tips on here, it seems like the Alfama and Bairro Alto districts sound the most interesting. Which should I aim for? How easy is it to get from the cruise ship terminal (wherever that may be...the cruise info helpfully just says "Lisbon") to one of these quarters? Am I likely to get stuck in traffic and risk missing the ship? Is there something I should definitely head for? (I do like museums, but after being cooped up on a ship, I'd rather just walk) Any suggestions welcome ;@P |

| Lisbon | Day Trip From Lisbon to Obidos Posted: Sun July 6, 2008 09:39 PM UTC
We have looked on-line and determined that we could take a bus from Lisbon to Caldas da Rainha and then either a different bus or taxi to Obidos. The Rede Expressos site indicates on a Wednesday that buses are frequent and take about 70 minutes to Caldas da Rainha. Is the connecting bus on a frequent schedule during weekdays and how much does it cost? How much should a taxi be for the ride from Caldas da Rainha to Obidos? Are bus schedules likely to change for early October?

| Lisbon | Lisbon Airport to Cascais, Car Rental Cascais, Day Tips Posted: Fri July 4, 2008 07:06 AM UTC
Hi, We will be arriving Lisbon airport early Sept with 7 days accommodation booked at Cascais. Would appreciate advice on following:
TRANSFER AIRPORT TO CASCAIS Would prefer taxi or Airport Shuttle Service to Cascais. What should I expect to pay for 2 persons. CAR RENTAL Cascais Do not wish to drive in Lisbon as we are from Australia and drive on other side of road, Lisbon traffic will be to busy. Would like to hire car for overnight return travel to Porto, can you recommend good rental coy for automatic car. What rate should I expect to pay? DAY TRIPS FROM CASCAIS - Bus or Train Can you recommend some day trips from Cascais, I think 1 day Lisbon will do as we join a coach tour in Lisbon after Cascais. Looking for suggestions outside Lisbon, but easy on public transport. Will appreciate all replies. Mike |

| Lisbon | Driving Malaga to Lisbon Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 08:00 PM UTC
Hi,
I will be driving from Malaga to Lisbon in the first week of July with my family (kids 3 and 11)...can anyone tell me what the roads are like and what stops are along the way? Is it a major highway, or little roads? I have heard the roads as winding and can be dangerous at points with hills and low visibility? Is that true? Thanks for all your help...much appreciated. If driving is not the way, is there a train or bus? |

| Sintra | lisbon, sintra Posted: Fri June 6, 2008 06:40 PM UTC
We're visiting Portugal for the first time, 7 nights total with a rental car, in July. We're thinking of breaking it down like this: Arrive, Night 1 Lisbon, Nights 2 and 3, Lagos, Night 4, Lisbon again, Nights 5, 6, and 7 Sintra. We'd like to make day trips from Sintra to Obidos and other places. Is that too much time in Sintra and not enough in Lisbon? How long is the drive from Sintra to the airport to catch an 11:00 am flight to London? Or should we stay the last night in Lisbon to make sure we make it to the airport in time?

| Lisbon | 5 Days In Lisbon Posted: Thu June 5, 2008 01:30 PM UTC
I'm spending 5 days in Lisbon at the start of July - my first visit to the city and I'm staying in accommodation very near to the Restauradores. I have a few questions to ask and would be really grateful for any help and advice;
(1) I intend to explore the Alfama area quite thoroughly starting from the Castelo de Sao Jorge and working downwards. What tram or bus no goes from the Restauradores area right up to the Castelo? (2) Are there any cheap supermarkets on the Avenia da Liberdade or in the Restuaradores area? (3)What is the cheapest one day travel pass I can get that includes travel on all trams, metro, funiculars and buses? (4) I intend to go to Sintra for a daytrip. Do the trains depart from Rossio station? And what's the earliest departing train on a weekday morning? And what time do they leave Sintra when returning back to Lisbon on the late afternoon or early evening? (5) What transport leaves the Resturadores area for Belem (ie. buses and trams etc - and what number or destination names are they?). Plus, does the metro go from Resturadores to Belem as well? (6)Are any of the musuems etc shut on a Monday? (7)What nice parks or off-the beaten track places in Lisbon would you recommend? (8) Is the Aerobus from the airport called number 91? And does it stop at the Resturadores? Likewise when returning to the airport whereabouts in Lisbon can you get the Aerobus and what times do they leave during the morning? (9) Finally, day by day, how would you spend your 5 days in Lisbon? Lots of questions, I know, but any help and advice at all would be most welcome! Thanks! |

| Sintra | Place in town to see Pena really well Posted: Wed May 28, 2008 08:30 PM UTC
Recently I posted about my family's trip to Portugal and how I would like to show them Pena Palace but that they cannot walk too much and thus climbing the hills to the palace was not an option. Here is the thread:
http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-419019- I got some great suggestions regarding the bus and such. However after thinking a bit, paying for entrance as well as the bus for 5 people to just look at the palace a bit from the outside seems a bit excessive. Thus I think the best would be to find a good spot in the city where you can get a good view of the palace (from some other big hill or something?) From outside the entrance and from the town itself, you can't see much of it. Are there any great outlook spots that you all can recommend me? Thanks! |

| Lisbon | Re-locating to Lisbon Posted: Tue May 20, 2008 02:43 AM UTC
I'm currently contemplating the idea of re-locating my family and I to Lisbon. The idea of living in such a marvelous and rich city is as exciting to me as winning the lottery. However, there is the little notion of finding good work. Does anyone know of some good resources where I can go and do some more research about work for an American citizen in Lisbon. Thanks for help that can be provided.

| Cascais | Sea Pollution in Cascais Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 11:03 PM UTC
Hi, I have seen a couple of references on the web to the sea being polluted and not suitable for swimming in Cascais (Google Book Search - Frommers and Rough Guide). Is this information out of date? We are hoping to travel to Cascais in July with our 5 year old and would prefer somewhere safe for her to swim. Could anyone advise?
Thanks. |

| Cascais | Good Cascais restaurant and beach recommendations please! Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 12:01 AM UTC
We will be arriving in Cascais in 2 weeks time and would like some recommendations of good restaurants. We are looking for good traditional Portuguese sea food restaurants where the locals eat, always a good sign, and also modern trendy restaurants.
Where are the best beaches close by? We will have a hire car so a short drive won’t be a problem. Any other “Must do’s” whilst in the area would be helpful. Many Thanks, Andy. |
