Lisbon Crime Posted: Sun November 1, 2009 07:58 PM UTC
We were considering visiting Lisbon (for the first time) during an upcoming trip to Europe. After reading about the rampant crime against tourists in Lisbon in the Frommer's guide, we are considering visiting Barcelona instead. The Frommer's guide mentions violence against tourists in Lisbon, in addition to the usual pick pocketing.
Is Lisbon more dangerous for tourists than other cities, like Barcelona?
Need a nice cafe somewhere between Praca Comercia and Estacion Apolina to relax for a few hours before leaving from Apolina at 2230. Easy on the ears and pleasant non screaming conversation appreciated. Suggestions most welcome
Also, and very important, does the Est. Apolina have left luggage or storage locker facilities. I need to dump bags there around 0730 in the morn and retrieve them before that 2230 train
I'll be traveling to Lisbon with my family at the end of November. We wish to go to Madrid after our visit to Lisbon. I found a night train from Lisbon to Madrid named "Lusitania", but the web site don't have on line booking for internation tickets.
I'll be pleased if any one can help me reach an agent of CP where I can book my ticket and get it when I arrive in Lisbon.
Can anyone help? We want to buy fresh flowers in Lisbon on 27th December for a wedding. What flowers will be available - we are thinking about lillies/hypericum/gerbera etc all in white. Will the market be open then?
Many thanks
We are a group of 8 meeting on Saturday 17th at 08:30 p.m. having a little EUROMEET revival at restaurant "Estrela do Mar" in Carcavelos beach with the link

SL Benfica host a Europa league football match against Everton FC on 22 October 2009.
I will be driving up from Carvoeiro on the day and would like some advice on where is the best place to park the car. As it is likely I will take the opportunity to go into Lisbon city centre are there any car parks where the car can be safely parked? Would I be best leaving the car in the city centre and getting the Metro to Colégio Militar/Luz?
Is there much to do in the vicinity of the stadium to encourage me to go early on the day or are there any "safe" bars for a drink beforehand?
Hi!!! I´ll be in Lisbon on Wednesday and I’m looking for a Bar where I can watch the Soccer game Argentina-Uruguay for the South African world cup qualifications… any recommendations?
I would like to know if somebody has bought at Rossio Station a combine Bus+Train ticket for 1 day (price: 12 Euros) to go from Lisbon to Sintra and Cascais. I want to visit Sintra for 1 day and this is my planning:
- Train from Rossio to Sintra (1,70 €)
- From Sintra Station there is a bus No. 434 (4,50 € go and return) to go up to Da Pena Palace. I visit the Palace.
- I go down or take the bus No. 434 to Mouros Castle (Is it worth to visit it?)
- I keep on going down or by bus No. 434 to the National Palace. I take some photos of it because I'm not interested in visiting inside.
- I go on walking up to Quinta Regaleira and visit it.
- From Regaleira to Sintra Station and here take the bus No. 403 to go to Cabo de Rouca (which is the price?). I take some photos and take again bus No. 403 to Cascais (Is it valid the same ticket or I have to buy another one?)
- I visit Cascais and going for a walk I arrive at Estoril.
- Return train from Estoril to Cais do Sodré at Lisbon (price?)
Does anybody know if this combine ticket (12 Euros) include trains and those buses (403 y 434) I want to use ?
I know it would be better to spend more time but I only have 1 day to do the whole trip.
I photographed this lighthouse in 1964 on the river Tagus when we went across on a ferry to dinner - don't know which side of the river. I am unable to determine what lighthouse it is.
I am planning to take the train from Lisbon (Entrecampos) to Evora in October, roundtrip. Can I safely reserve and buy them when I get to Portugal or must I buy on the web from over here (USA). Don't know if they fill up, and I know you must reserve for the IC trains. Thank you for your help!
So I'll be leaving in few weeks for the honeymoon and wanted to see if anyone out there had any recent answers (I tried searching forums, but all of the answers were old). Basically, should I book our overnight train tickets from Lisbon-Madrid via the internet (686.00 for a Granclass cabin for 2 via Eurorailways) or get them as soon as I arrive in Lisbon (arrive on 10/12 and leaving for Spain on 10/20). Not sure if there is a price difference, but if there are significant savings, I would love to know.
Hi, everybody!
While I visited Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in Belem I saw people (they were tourists from Japan actually) touching the hand in the wall. This hand is a part of a marble wall decoration. And it is located at the entrance hall near the grave of Vasco da Gama. I stepped closer to check this hand. It was polished like thousand of people are touching it every day.
Does anyone know what is this hand? Why everybody are trying to touch it?
I didn't see the same decoration on the other wall or anywhere else in this place.
I tried to find information in internet but didn't find any.

Hello all.
I have booked our trip to Madeira in December!!! The plane will land in Lisbon at terminal one, and we depart to Madeira in Terminal 2. We have 45 minutes, and I guess it must be enough time. Is it "easy to use" the Lisbon airport?
thinking of staying in the Oasis Mansion Hostel in 24 R. de Santa Catarina, Lisbon 1200. Is this a good place to be for the bars etc and is it fairly safe to walk from here I checked out Google Streetmaps and the roads around look really scruffy with graffiti everywhere. What do you think? and is there anywhere nearby where I can leave my car cheaply?
Photography allowed in the Jeronimos Monastery in Belem? How about flash or tripods? Is photography allowed in other grand places around Portugal, like Tomar?
planning to reach lisbon by bus and these two stations came up as choices for final destination. could someone please tell me which of these stations are nearer to the center of lisbon?
I will be in Lison at the end of September and am thinking about visiting Sevilla for a day. Overall, what's the best way to get to Spain?
Is there an affordable way to get there by train? How do I purchase the ticket and where is the train station in Lisbon? Or is driving a rental car a better idea? Thanks in advance.
Hello:
I've been a VT site reader for many years but have never posted a question. Portugal has me stumped. There are so many places we'd love to see and not enough time. My husband and I arrive Lisbon from Madrid by train at 7:40 am on September 30. From there, we plan to take a train to Sintra then return to Lisbon in the afternoon. Tour Lisbon. Next day, we were planning to rent a car and drive to Obidos, Nazare, Batalha, Alcobaca and end in Coimbra for overnight. We'd love to have "leitao" for dinner in or near Coimbra. Return the car in Coimbra and take the train back to Lisbon the next day. Or do the reverse and take the train straight to Coimbra and drive back to Lisbon for the last day.
However, I have been reading horror stories of some car rental companies and am hesitant to rent now. I thought of the trains and/or buses to get around but it would be too hard with baggage unless there was a baggage storage location at each place.
If we do rent a car, can someone please recommend a reliable agency and would
it be better to pick up in Lisbon or Coimbra?
Going to Portugal for the first time as an adult (went every summer as a kid to be with family) for my honeymoon! Anyways, excited but looking for help. Is it possible to do the following route with public transportation (bus or train are fine) or are we better off renting a car?
We are staying in my family's house in Sintra and want to do the following:
Sintra>Obidos>Coimbra>sidetrip to visit family in Chipar di Cima (I think we've got this covered)>Porto
Any suggestions or tips are much appreciated! I am psyched to go back after all these years. Would it be better to rent a car? The idea was that once in Porto we would rent a car and drive to Gouveia to visit my dad's family and then just meander back to Lisbon and drop the car off at the airport there. Are we better off just renting a car the whole way? I remember gas prices being pretty atrocious as a child and can only imagine it's worse now.
Hi,
We are going for a driving holiday to Lisbon for 2 weeks, Does anyone know if Wi-Fi is widely available in Lisbon and surrounding areas. Are internet / cyber cafes easy to find.
thanks for your help....Sue
I will be travelling to Lisbon with my boyfriend from September 9 to 13. Occasion is his 33rd and my 30th birthday and I would like do something special and not a classical tour. Can anyone of you recommend a good tour guide or is maybe one of you willing to take us for a tour through Lisbon?
