I'm trying to book a certain hotel in Alexandria but, from on-line searches, I get "not available"; and in conversation with the hotel they say call back in 2-3 months. Does anyone know why this is? and when specifically I could get a reasonable rate?

Stupidly booked flights to Egypt, flying in to Borg el Arab Airport, not realising there was more than one airport near Alexandria.

Had planned to hire a car, but cannot find a single car hire company that recognises the airport.

Does Borg el Arab Airport have any Car Hire services?

I am planning a trip to travel overland ( by bus, and boat if possible) from Alexandria, Egypt to Spain. I plan to mostly remain close to the north african coast. Can anyone recommend any unique, out of the way locations along the north african coast that are worth a visit? Such as: small, picturesque villages, ports, or oasis /desert villages?

Also has anyone travelled by road thorugh Libya and/or Algeria, and was
it safe? Were the buses suitable for a lone european traveller? I am female, and travelling alone.

Has anyone out there travlled this north african route before?

I would like to know if there is passenger boat service from Alexandria, Egypt to Libya - to either Tripoli or another major port city in Libya.

Have all international flights stopped going to El Nouzha, and diverted to Borg El Arab?


My ticket was to El Nouzha but I ended up in Borg El Arab, I should have claimed some sort of compensation from STA! or Lufthansa.

I hope they have not stopped flight coming to El Nouzha, it is so much more close to the rest of Alex.

Silly question, but I need help urgently!:)

I'm going to stay in Alexandria from 20 to 30 November, and I was thinking of renting a small apartment rather than staying in a hotel.
I have asked a local friend to find something nice and furnished, but nothing special or big (1 bedroom, living room, batroom and kitchen) to rent, and he tells me that places which are nice, clean and well kept will cost me 1000 to 1200 LE. Now, this price for just 10 days sounds like a rip off and I'm just wondering if this is what you're really supposed to pay, or if my friend may be adding a sizeable commission for himself to the actual price. Anybody knows the average prices?

Due to flight changes, we'll have an extra 2 nights in alexandria and so we've decided to spend 2 nights in cairo and travel by train.

Any answers on the following questions would really be appreciated !

- What is the best , turbo train or express train ?
- Can one buy a return ticket or are only one way tickets sold ?
- What is the most convenient way , buy the tickets yourself or through a travel agency ?
- Can one buy a train ticket on the travel day itself or should one buy the tickets a day before ? Is there a difference between turbotrain and express train tickets ?
- Is it easy to find your way in the train stations if one doesn't speak arabic ?
- Where can I find an up-to-date train time schedule alexandria-cairo-alexandria for alexandria-cairo travelling on monday 30 october and for cairo-alexandria on wednesday 1 november ?

I've been reading the posts about Alexandria and they are all really helpful.

I've decided (a bit last minute) to go to Alexandria this fall to learn Arabic and also get to know my family in Egpyt- my father's Egyptian.

What I'm wondering is, does anyone know about the language schools in Alexandria? So far I've found a few- the TAFL program with the university, and two private schools- Al-Qalam and Qortoba. Has anyone studied at these programs? I'd like to find a school with good teachers and a small class size. I would also be willing to go to Cairo, if there is a good language school there.

Also does anyone know if is it possible to live with Egyptian students? I'd prefer to live with people my age (20s), but I'd much rather live with locals and learn Arabic than live with other foreigners. I know most Egyptians live at home until they get married, but I wasn't sure if it might be different with university students.

Finally how is it travelling, and walking around on your own as a woman- should I expect anything dangerous? And any other tips about life in Egypt/Alexandria, fun places to go etc. would be totally appreciated of course!

At the end of August I'll cruise with my family and the ship will dock to Alessandria for the entire day (from 8 am to 9 pm.). The shore excursions offered by cruise company are very expensive and don't meet what I want.
I wonder if there are taxis or guides available for the entire day in order to take my family to visit Alessandria, Pyramids, Egiptyan Musuem and the other archelogical sites that are worth to seeing.
Has anybody some mail adress or phone number in order to get in touch with some guide or taxi owner?

After having been informed not to pack the straw sunhat, I am looking for contemporary beach attaire.

Not looking for two pieces, just a tank and a linen/cotton over shirt and a straw sun hat (this is the example to work from):

Just a breazy white cotton or linen caftan and the straw hat. Don't want another 2nd degree sunburn on this vacation.

I know of the Green Plaza, Zahran Mall, but want to know of the shops their names and how contemporary the fashions are, in addition to prices.

I am travelling to Alex next month and want to purchse a swimsuit that conforms with sharia law. I know such things exist as I have read articles about them being available in Cairo boutiques. Any one know where in Alex I can buy one from. I am staying in the Ibrahamia area so any shops in Lagitare Street would be helpful or Manchaya etc.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of anywhere to go instead of sharm? I've heard so much about it being built up and toristy,it sounds like one big nightmare. what are the beaches, people, culture, places to stay like around Alexandria? Or perhaps other areas around the red sea? We went to thailand for two months last year, and i guess we're looking for this same sort of relaxed friendly atmosphere, that makes it easy and enjoyale to travel and have the time of your life.

I'm in Turkey right now and am looking for an inexpensive way to get to Alexandria where I'll spend the summer. I've been told that all the boats from Turkey are packaged cruise vacations only but I'm willing to take a bus to Syria or go to Cyprus to catch a ferry there. Does anyone know how to find information about where there are boats to Alexandria?

Has any one taken small kids to egypt! can you find baby portable pack n plays or play pens there and about how much was cost to buy!

I am only dreaming of one day coming to Alexandria and diving in that harbor..ever since I saw that 90 year old scholar from FRANCE jump in and check out the site...I've been dreaming about it...so I just want to make my dream closer by finding out more about ALexandria...I study history and am wondering what language is spoken there, how easy it is to get around and where the closest airport is etc.....just thought id put it out there. I'm having major problems trying to get a trip to Alexandria sorted.

Firstly apologies if this sounds like a silly question or if i come across clueless.

I am supposed to be going to Alexandria between 19 june and returning by 19 july. I will be staying there for maybe the full month or maybe 3 weeks i am not sure yet, depends on a number of things.

So far i've not been impressed by the package holidays because the maximum length of stay they offer is 14 nights and same with the flight tickets... is there a way to get an open ticket that you can return when you feel like it and once ur purpose of the trip has been met??? i honestly havent a clue. so any help any words of advice etc would be dead helpful to me and much appreciated!!

I have never been to another country before, so i havent a clue where to start and how to go about it.

There are going to be 4 people travelling and we need to get visas I think, not really sure? if so where do i get them from?? (I'm from UK, Manchester).

I don't want the trip to end up being dead expensive, i was hoping someone could give me some advice on what the best and most cost effective way to stay there would be. I don't know anyone there so can not ask a local there and i've done loads of internet searching but not had any luck so far with accomodation, hotels seem to be very expensive so is there an alternative if so what are my options?.

Maybe rent a place, if so what are the prices like and how do i get in contact with lanlords and stuff? would you be able to give me phone numbers or website details where i could have a look and find all this info.

And if ive left some detail out that ive not thought about, then its probably cz its never crossed my mind, so would appreciate information that would be useful.

How far is the train station in Alexandria from the cruise port? Is it within walking distance or would you recommend a taxi? I couldn't find a map online, so if someone could point me in the right direction.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a reliable taxi driver in Alexandria that I can contact to arrange to hire for a couple of days while we`re in there in April?

I know that there are plenty of taxis and that the hotel can probably sort it out for us, but if anyone has used someone there and knows how to contact them I`d be really grateful to you if you can send me there info.
