New York City New York to Chicago by Train
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 05:21 PM UTC
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone know if the train trip from New York to Chicago is good to take - it's supposed to be on a scenice route. The Train is the 'Lakeshore Limited' which goes daily.

This instead of flying..anybody know I'd really appreciate knowing. Main thing is we head West as might from Chicago hire a car and then go all the way through to Vegas. Just something different and maybe some nice stops on the way....Nice trip or rather just fly?

Many thanks!

New York City Roosevelt Island Tram
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 04:20 PM UTC
I've only just found out about this.

Where can I get it? How do I get to it? (I am staying in Midtown).
Will it be open in March?
Is it possible to get on it and come back nearly straight away?
What is there to do on the island?

Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks

Has anybody got any suggestions what we can do the afternoon of thanksgiving?

We are watching the parade, and have booked tickets for the 5pm show of christmas spectacular - and having dinner at 8.30pm

Just not sure what to do in afternoon - what do locals do and will there be anywhere open to get a light lunch?

Greenland Early Stages
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 01:36 AM UTC
Hello all--
I am in the very early stages of planning an around the world trip. I would love to make a stop in both Greenland and Iceland if possible but I don't know much about where to fly from/which cities to visit etc. From my understanding it is possible to fly to Iceland from Canada but not Greenland? I'm just wondering if anyone has insights on the cheapest way to get to these countries? Thanks!

California Stops between LA and San Diego?
Posted: Wed November 4, 2009 09:37 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,

We're planning a trip to California in February 2010. Our two main destinations are San Diego and LA. I know it's not a long drive between the two cities, but we are traveling with an infant and would like to stop somewhere in between if there is anything advisable to see. Any thoughts?

Thanks :)

Los Angeles California in 2010, need your suggestions and advice..
Posted: Wed November 4, 2009 11:24 AM UTC
Hello VTrs...this is part two of my LAX postings. From your suggestions in my earlier post, I have come to this Itinerary. I need you comments/suggestions. I also need to ask you a sensible budget, daily budget.

Day 1 half day in LAX
Day 2 More of LAX / pick up our car / afternoon drive towards SFO(planning to spend the night halfway through...thinking around/nearby Hearst Castle...your suggestions please)
Day 3 SFO (GG Bridge / Alcatraz ...)
Day 4 SFO - OYS Yosemite
Day 5 OYS - LAS (via Death Valley...??? your suggestions. If not what is our alternative route)
Day 6 LAS - LAS (any of you tried those crazy rides up the tower?)
Day 7 LAS - GCN - LAS
Day 8 LAS - SAN (aside from the Zoo what can we do in San Diego in a day?)
Day 9 San - LAX
Day 10 - Day 14 Will be in LAX the last 5 days

I will be travelling with 4 others / we are plannin gto rent a car form Day 2 to Day 10 and just use public transport in LAX.

How much do we budget for fuel cost fot he amoutn of driving we are planning. How about our daily budget (just food and necessities..). Kindly give me a rough idea of how much we need to budget per day while we are in the US.

Unfortunately the planning has been left on my already tired shoulders...so will be very grateful for your help..any help... Thanks again...

Los Angeles Planning a trip to Los Angeles by the end of the year/New Year's Eve
Posted: Wed November 4, 2009 04:14 AM UTC
Going with my family, we'll be there December 31st to Jan. 4th. (30th and 5th are the day we arrive and leave respectively). We were thinking about celebrating the New Year at Disneyland since they keep the park open until late at night for that, but I'm not sure if it'll be TOO cramped? We also don't want to be there all day, it would be ideal to get there in the afternoon (say, 2, 3 PM?) and stay there until 12:30 a.m. or so. Or if there's any other better ideas about what to do in New Year's Eve in L.A.

That leaves four other days to figure out what to do, too. We were thinking about going to San Diego for a day, take the train early in the morning, come back late afternoon, but we're not really sure what we would do once we're there. Any suggestions? I saw Seaworld and the Zoo, not sure if those would be the ones to see? Or, Santa Barbara. Although I'm not sure what we could do in Santa Barbara either.

We were also thinking about either going to a Lakers game, or a Dodgers game if they're not too expensive. And try to attend either a Late Late show or Tonight Show taping (if we get tickets only), but that would have to be January 4th, and I'd guess they won't be filming shows that week.

Other points of interest: The Observatory, Rodeo Drive, one or two shopping malls/areas for my mom, Hollywood, Santa Monica Pier.

But we really haven't figured out an itinerary, so I was hoping you guys could help me out there to get a better idea of what to do, and when to do it since I don't know what's close to what. And taking into account that most things will be closed on January 1st.

North America Cross Country Backpacking Journey Planned -- Several Questions
Posted: Wed November 4, 2009 01:17 AM UTC
Good evening, everyone at VT. I just joined the forum community tonight but I plan on being as active as I can in the coming months so I look forward to future discussions with all of you. Anyways, let's get to it then shall we? The journey I am planning on taking is:

Beginning in the first week of March and ending in May, I plan on leaving for what I hope will be at least a three month long backpacking journey across the continent of North America. Thus far, I don't have a specific list of sites/cities that I plan on visiting but I'll be starting on that list tonight. Also, I don't have the budget for a car so I will instead be living out of a camping backpack. I am an Eagle Scout so I plan on sleeping outdoors a lot but the occasional night in a hostel or motel for a hot shower won't be missed either. My questions (so far) for you seasoned travelers out there include:

What type/make/model of backpack (external frame I'm guessing for starters?) would you recommend for a trip like this?

Should I follow a specific route around the country or just go where my feet take me Jack Kerouac style?

Are there any long-term travel plans I can purchase with any major bus or train company?

Any must see's?

Thoughts in general?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from all of you. Cheers!

My fiance and myself found a place on the parkway that we love. We ride the motorcycle there and walk around. There is an old cabin there, and a trail that is marked on the lookout point there. We want to know if we can get married there? Are there laws about that?

New York City Bon Jovi Fan - New York City to Sayreville, New Jersey
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 04:42 PM UTC
Hi All,

As I've mentioned before I am coming over to NYC on 15th March for 5 nights - I am there for the St Patricks Day Parade and sightseeing.......

BUT I am also a big Bon Jovi fan and would like to maybe take a short trip to Sayreville, where Jon Bongiovi grew up?? Is this something that I could do? How long would it take to get there? Is there anything to do there? And how would I get around?

Any ideas?

Please advise.

Thanks

New York City Spending money/buying & bringing home clothes
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 10:22 AM UTC
Hi guys,

I am coming over to NYC on 15th March 2010 til 20th March 2010.

I was just wondering if £1000 spending for myself would be enough.
I have already purchased my statue of Liberty tickets and I am hoping to buy the tickets for the Rockefeller Centre etc before I come over, so the £1000 will only be for my food/drink (I'm not looking to go to expensive places for that) and possibly clothes and souveneirs.

What do you think - do I need more?

Thanks in advance.

Bridgeport Hotel along I-95, near Bridgeport
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 05:19 AM UTC
Hi VT'ers! I'm going to the WOrld Series on Wednesday, and must wake up in, or near, Bridgeport on Thursday morning. While I am driving from the Bronx to Bridgeport, I need to drop somebody off at a MetroNorth on Thursday morning. I've been on Tripadvisor for the last 90 minutes, reading up on The Holiday Inn in Bridgeport, Hilton Garden Inn of Stratford, and Marriott in Trumbull. I gather that downtown Bridgeport is a slum, and that I'd want to stay in a safer town - especially as I'll be arriving at my hotel around 1am early Thursday morning. I'd like to keep it around $150. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Or is the Comfort Inn on Airport Road in a safer area? Thank you so much for your input.

I need to get to Quebec, Canada from Hawaii but I don't really have the budget to fly. Since I'm in Hawaii I figured getting to Cali for free might be a good place to start. I'm ready to take on any travel conditions as long as I get there. If you've got a tip for me please reply to this post. Thank you!

Baltimore buses from Baltimore to Philadelphia - NYC
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 12:20 AM UTC
Hi,
It's great getting lots of info from members here.
We will be staying around Inner Harbor area in Baltimore and plan to travel from Baltimore to Philadelphia (Reading Market area), subsequently travel from Philly to NYC ( around Penn Station) or anywhere there is a PATH station.
Any suggestion for bus services that is convenient for this itinerary? That doesn't require us to travel too far from hotels to the bus terminals.
How are Greyhounds, megabus or gotobus? Any other suggestions are most welcome. Thanks.

I live in Phoenix and my 18 yr. old grandaughter wants to go shopping at the Alley. I read where it is the same merchandise at a lower price near the alley. Can you give me the address of the best deals. My grandaughter wants to go to Johnny cupcakes. Also where can we stay that won't be high end. I checked LaQuinta and it is about 9 miles from Melrose Ave.
