Sydney Opera, dress code Posted: Fri August 14, 2009 12:23 PM UTC
Hi again
I decided to end my trip down under with a grand finale: I'll go to see 'Cosi fan tutte' on my last night in Oz! :)))
Anyone knows how people dress for the opera in Sydney? Here in Barcelona the dress code is quite relaxed, and even you see people in smart suits and gorgeous dresses, unless it's a special night you can go to the Liceu with a nice pair of jeans not feeling out of place.
So, I hope not having to pack many extra clothes!

where to stay in Sydney? Posted: Fri August 14, 2009 12:17 PM UTC
After a similar question regarding Cairns, I'd like to know first-hand personal recommendations about where to stay in Sydney.
I should be there for 4 nights, from Sep 14 to 18
Budget is not really an issue (but I'm not willing to spend a fortune). What I want is a private room in a hostel or small hotel, a place that has not a big corporate-hotel feeling, and that have a laundry (I'm traveling with minimal luggage so I need to wash my clothes often) and maybe kitchen Ideally a place frequented by friendly fellow travelers, but not a party place. I do not need luxury, but yes cleanliness and not too much noise, and in a good location. Maybe I'm asking for something impossible?
Any gem you have stayed in and you recommend?
Thanks!!!

CBD vs. Beach - ? Posted: Tue August 11, 2009 03:03 PM UTC
Finally!!! A friend is getting married in an awesome location!! My husband and I will be in Australia Dec 28-Jan 8 for the first time. Our friend's wedding is in the middle of our trip on Rose Bay, NSW. We just decided we are going and booked our flights, so I have just started my research.
We would love to enjoy the beaches but we also want to have a day here and there of activities (bridge climb, blue mtns, vineyard, etc). Due to the holiday weekend we need to book a hotel quickly! We are trying to decide if we should divide our stay between a beach hotel (maybe Coogee or Bondi) and the other half in the CBD or a Harbour hotel. Or, should we stay in one place and use public transportation to get back and forth whenever we want to do site seeing by the harbour or hang at the beaches? Which way would be more time efficient and less hassle?
Also, we are debating whether or not we will fly to Melbourne for a few days. If we do, we would only stay at one hotel in Sydney for sure. We aren't big on shopping and prefer to enjoy the culture and nature. Would Melbourne be for us? I am aware of the Great Ocean Rd but is it worth it to fly to Melbourne or do you recommend staying in Syndney?
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer :)

7 days in Sydney, 1 would you go? and 2 what would you do if... Posted: Mon July 6, 2009 01:11 AM UTC
Okay i can go to Oz for 7 days, 8 max, debating on whether to do it. Budget after flight and hotel is like $500-700 USD (2 people), what would you do? How much does each excursion cost? We can eat like birds and drink a lot in the hotel so figure the listed price is all the money we have after that.

How much time do I need in Sydney airport? Posted: Fri June 19, 2009 12:38 AM UTC
Hi all,
I need a bit of help. I am traveling to Sydney from US on Qantas. I arrive there at 8:05 am on a Friday. I want to buy some tickets to go to Christchurch, New Zealand flying Emirates. The flight is at 10:15 am. Do I have enough time to clear the immigration/customs and check in on the other flight? I guess both flights use the international terminal, right?
So would 2 hours and 10 mins be enough for this? I've never been to Sydney (or Australia for that matter) and have no idea how busy the airport gets.
Btw, I need an Australian visa being a citizen of Romania (even though I am a US resident). Would this result in a longer immigration line?
Thank you!

Places to visit in Sydney and surrounding Posted: Wed June 17, 2009 02:18 PM UTC
Hi! I'm going to Sydney with my friend in July for five weeks. Since it's quite a long period of time, could you please give me some tips of interesting places/activities in Sydney and environs (Sydney chiefly, we'll have a restricted access to the car)? Please bear in mind that it's winter and many activities are automatically excluded, so I'd like not to end up being bored to tears, not knowing what to do with something like eg. 2 weeks left :). Send both well-known and not really popular, but worthwhile alternatives - I'v been there twice already and would like to see something new (won't mind to see some old places, though - it's sooo beutiful there).
Thanks a lot, Peter

Train/RailPass/Buses Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 09:10 AM UTC
My wife and I will be in Sydney for the first time for 8 days in a few weeks. We will be staying downtown, not far from the Harbor. I was told not to rent a car due to not being familiar with right hand drive and traffic. It appears there are good trains and buses. A week pass is $170pp. It includes ferries. We plan on also going out of Sydney whenever possible, blue mts etc. I also think its extra for the airport and out of town.
Is this pass a better option than using taxis? Are taxis reasonable for two or more expensive. Any thoughts?

storing luggage for a day Posted: Sat June 13, 2009 12:51 PM UTC
Hi, can anyone tell me if there is somewhere to store our luggage when we leave our ship at circular quay? Or perhaps at the train station? We have the whole day in Sydney before we need to go to the airport. At this stage we plan to catch the train to the airport, probably cheaper than a taxi??! Thank you for all suggestions. Anna&Kym

Greetings!
I will be coming to Sydney in December and already the Hostels are putting up the "Sold Out" signs up!
I have checked out the Hostels on Hostelbookers and Hostelworld but these hostels are much of a muchness, does anyone know of a little known hostel that will tick all the boxes and have accommodation available for Christmas and the New Year period?

stay in Sydney - with a family of 5 Posted: Sat May 2, 2009 05:42 PM UTC
We arrive on Dec 7,2009 for 3 days in Sydney. our budget is limited and with 5 most places require us to book 2 rooms. being a larger centre there is always a safety concern. our accent will stand out so we could be easy targets. my visit 20 yrs ago was fabulous so i want to share your wonderful city with my family. can anyone recommend a reasonably priced place to stay that offers good links to most common tourist attractions? do hostils work for families and are they a realistic option for us?
