Goreme or Urgup? Posted: Wed August 5, 2009 06:37 PM UTC
Which town is better for a couple of nights? I am visiting Cappadocia with a friend, and we are looking for the best base to explore the ruins, do a hike, and take a hot air balloon ride.
Thanks!

Car hire vs tour? Posted: Wed April 8, 2009 08:04 AM UTC
Hi fellow travellers,
My husband and I are plannning to visit cappadoccia in early May for 2 full days. We are on budget so I need some advice on the most affordable way to visit the best bit of cappadoccia. I am contemplating either to take 2 full days tour (blue & red) or hire a car.
If I decided on tours:
Is it possible to arrive before the tour start (930 am) if we take bus from Istanbul? I got some conflicting info re hours taken on bus journey, ranging from 10-12 hrs. What bus should I take to arrive at Goreme latest by around 830ish?
Is 50YTL ok for each tour per person? So far, we shy away from joining tour coz we would like the flexibilty of spending time on what we like most. However, due to limited time & information as well as tight budget, we might consider this option.
On car hire:
Can any of you recommend good, trusted & affordable car hire company? Should we book in advance or on the spot?
How much is car hire for a day?
Can someone suggested good driving itinerary coz I can;t find cappa's road map so I don't know what to expect with regards to distance in between the places of interest. I am not doing the balloon thing.
Is driving in Goreme safe?
How far is the Goreme open air museum from goreme town? is it walkable?
Sorry for long entry but thanks for your help.

Transportation from Goreme to Kayseri or Kayseri Airport Posted: Tue March 31, 2009 04:43 PM UTC
Could someone explain me:
1) what are the transportation options (bus, dolmus, etc.) from Goreme (or any nearby city) to Kayseri?
2) what are the prices and frequencies?
3) Is it easy to get a dolmus or taxi from Kayseri city center to Kayseri airport ?
I will arrive in Goreme by bus and leave from Kayseri airport and I am trying to decide if I should get a rental car at Kayseri airport.
It seems really difficult to find out about transportation costs.
I thank you in advance.

Daily bus from Goreme to Istanbul Posted: Mon March 30, 2009 12:52 PM UTC
Is there a daily bus from Goreme to Istanbul? I have a late night flight from Istanbul and I'd like to travel by day and in the evening to get to the airport.
Coming early in the morning in Istanbul is quite complicated because I'd have to wait the whole day and half night for a plane. So I'd prefer travelling during day.
Is there such a line?
Thanks.

underground cities in cappadocia Posted: Wed January 16, 2008 03:08 AM UTC
hey everybody,
ill be coming to the cappadocia area next spring sometime to write about the underground cities. I'm wondering if someone can give me some tips. How long would it take for me to see all (or at least most) of the cities in the cappadocia area? Would it make sense to have a home base in the goreme and travel around to each village? or would it be economical to move from village to village? i would be traveling on the absolute lowest budget, so im wondering how much a city tour would cost, how much a hot air balloon ride would cost, what would be the cheapest housing, how much is transportation? apologies for peppering you with these questions... i have to submit a budget for all of this stuff.
I'd love to hear anyone's favorite underground cities or spaces or any tips at all. Thank you so much!

Who was wearing the VT tshirt and passed us from FatBoys Bar Last Sunday?! Posted: Mon October 1, 2007 09:55 PM UTC
Me & Jonathan were innocently having a couple of Efes at Fatboys in Goreme when Jonathan got all excited because someone wearing a VT t-shirt walked passed! We got so excited we forgot to actually say anything and VT-tee had gone before we could blink.
So come on - own up! Who are you?! ;o)

Goreme Valley Maps Posted: Thu September 13, 2007 04:02 PM UTC
I am looking for map/maps to help me with my hikes, that cover the Red and Meskendir Valleys area. It has proven a very difficult job for me, as no map covers the valleys and/or tracks/paths that exist. All through these paths are quite linear, there exist many valleys and corresponding names.
Does any one have a clue where I can get such map, or provide any map that can be useful for my hikes?
Best regards,
José

Whirling Dervishes Posted: Sat August 4, 2007 01:24 AM UTC
Our trip to Turkey draws near and I have to make my final plans.
We arrive on the 25th September.
I would like to see the Whirling Dervishes while I am staying in Goreme.
I have heard that they only perform once a week, so I need to know, which day and where and do I need to book?
Ballon rides, how much do they cost and are they worth the money?
Hotel, I am looking for a nice hotel (not a backpacker type hotel) that gives you the comfort and also the "feel" of Goreme, recomendations please.
To see the Dervishes, take a baloon ride and see the chimneys in Cappidocia, how many days do you think I should spend in Goreme? (we are coming from Alanya)
Thank you.

Cappadocia in October Posted: Thu July 19, 2007 02:38 PM UTC
Would appreciate anyone's help with the following questions:
1) How low could temperatures fall mid-to-end October? I know this is a silly question considering one could easily browse the web, but I'd be more interested to hear firsthand experiences.
2) Ramadan ends in mid-October, what would it be like in Cappadocia during Ramadan? Can one eat in public without offending religious sensibilities? Will there be guides available? Transportation easy to come by?
3) I have a very limited time in Cappadocia, expecting to explore the sights in just three days. Which would be the most strategic base - Goreme or Urgup? Or any other place?
Tesekkurler!

Traveling to Cappadoccia Posted: Wed July 4, 2007 02:38 PM UTC
Hi everybody,
Me and a friend of mine thought to go to Turkey the last 10 days of August and wanted to ask you some advices:
First of all, our main destination will be Cappadoccia. I heard Goreme it's the best place where one could set his "base camp" in Cappadoccia, so we will probably end up there.
Our plane will arrive in Istambul, so any idea what's the best ( cheapest? :) way to travel from Istambul to Goreme? I read on this forums that buses are quite comfortable and they also travel at night so one could actually sleep in them. Is that true? Any other advice here?
My second question is: how are the temperatures late August (20 - 30) in Goreme? Will we find 40 °C there? I hope not :)
What about transportation? We want to do a lot of trekking and i was wandering if we need some kind of transportation from Goreme to other places of interest nearby, or we can just get there by foot? Is there a place where we can get a map with all the trekking routes? Whats places are a "must see" (in your opinion)?
Anyways guys, i have too many questions in my mind right now and i don't want to turn this post into a novel :)
I will appreciate any info you can spare about Goreme, your experiences there, where can we sleep, where can we eat, etc.
Thanks a lot for everything,
Iulian

transport from Goreme to Kayseri airport Posted: Wed December 20, 2006 12:15 AM UTC
Hi to all,
We are visiting Goreme next June for 4 nights, doing the balloon flight etc then we are heading back to Istanbul on the 7am flight out of Kayseri. The airport shuttle buses don't connect to this early flight and have been quoted 50Euro for 2 by a couple of agencies. Does this seem reasonable and should we bother booking the transfer before we go or just shop around when we get there. What about local buses? Is it too early for them?We would need to leave Goreme by 5am. Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks. Mary

Travel from Goreme to Malatya Posted: Tue July 11, 2006 05:42 PM UTC
I wish to travel from Goreme to Malatya in order to then see Nemrut Dagi and those big stone heads. Has anyone travelled this route before and can you advise on the easiest way to do so (I am assuming coach travel is cheapest). If you recommend a better place to stay than Malatya in that area then please do so.
I am then wishing to travel from there to Syria. Do coaches travel from Malatya to, say, Aleppo in northern Syria?
