Petra Renting a Minivan with a Driver
Posted: Sun December 10, 2006 07:23 AM UTC
I have a question of the possibility of rental a minivan with a driver for 7 days:

I along with a group of 11 people (we are 12 total) plan to travel around Jordan and Syria in 7 days (yes I know not much time).

In the country where I live - in Georgia - I often practice hiring a minivan (preferably Ford or Mercedes) and making trips up and down the country. I wonder whether it is possible to do so in Jordan / Syria as well and could you advise or recommend ANYONE with a minivan for the following itinary: Alepo - Krek de Sh. - Hama - Palmyra - Damasсus - sidneia - malula - Damascus - Bosra - Aman - Petra - Dead Sea - Aman. This everythign is going to happen in 7 days.

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Posted: Fri November 17, 2006 04:05 PM UTC
I would like a relatively easy way to get to Petra from Sharm. Would the ferry/taxi trip take more the 1/2 day? What travel agencies in Sharm would do a two day trip by plane?

Petra Hotel in Petra help needed!
Posted: Tue September 12, 2006 07:14 AM UTC
Goodness I have never read so many good/bad reports about hotels as there about Petra Hotels!! There were mentions of immodium even with the more up market hotels????
I am travelling with my (daughters 15 and 12) in October and want a clean (and that includes the bathroom!!) place to stay... Most people say stay near the entrance and not in the village as its uphill when your weary at the end of the day, but then I read that hotels will pick you up??

So does anyone have any recent recommendations??

Petra Is Petra closing early because of Ramadan?
Posted: Fri September 8, 2006 04:19 PM UTC
Hello everyone out there!

I will be going to Petra either early or mid-October....Is Petra opening up later in the day and closing earlier than normal with Ramadan going on?

Are there any changes with things concerning access?

One last question...How crowded is Petra? I imagine October is a very crowded time but I've never been. Hope everyone is enjoying the Autumn coming on!

Petra Photographic Rules/Restrictions in Petra?
Posted: Fri September 8, 2006 05:15 AM UTC
Hi!

I will be going to Petra mid-October...bringing two cameras, both of which require a heavy tripod to use. Have been down to the mayan pyramids in Mexico and they wanted $250 USD a day to use a tripod....wondering if anyone knows if there are any photographic restrictions whatsoever with photographing Petra?

Can a tripod be used? and do you have to purchase a special camera permit to photograph these wonderful monuments?

Thanks so much for any ideas!

Petra Taxi from Amman to Petra, Petra to Acaba Israeli border....
Posted: Sat July 29, 2006 02:49 PM UTC
I will be arriving in Amman at the airport 7:30pm and was wondering if I would be able to go strait to Petra at that time of the evening by taxi or should I wait till 4 or 5 am to make the taxi ride? I basically have 1 day to spend in Petra. I wanted to start my tour in Petra early in the morning.
Also, will it be easy for me to find a taxi to take me on to the border, and how long will the ride be? I need to meet friends in Eilat by 7pm that evening.
Or should I hire one driver and guide for the entire day?

Petra What is the best route from Hurghada to Mt Sinai, to Petra, then back to Cairo?
Posted: Sun June 4, 2006 02:17 AM UTC
My husband and I will be on a tour of Egypt in September. On the 2nd last day we will be in Hurghada. As we want to climb Mt Sinai and travel to Wadi Rum and Petra we thought it might be better to leave the tour here and travel across to the Sinai peninsula by ferry rather than go all the way back to Cairo and set out again from there. What do you think?
Can anyone suggest the best way to travel from Hurghada to Mt Sinai, then to Wadi Rum then to Petra then back to Cairo please?
After the initial ferry trip from Hurghada I would prefer to stay on land(being a land lubber)and travel by bus unless the ferry to Aquaba is a much better option.
We will have 6 days. Is this long enough? How long should we spend in each place? Is there enough time to stay along the Red Sea coast somewhere? Should we do this (and where) or would the time be better spent elsewhere? (We will be snorkelling during our stay in Hurghada)
Also we would like a guide for Wadi Rum and Petra. How and where should we organise this?
I would greatly appreciate any information and thoughts for our trip? Jo

What bus/train companies are there? I was going to fly but the price from Cairo to Amman $375 one way for only 295 miles seems steep. I am traveling with my boys ages 11 and 13. After Amman we would then make our way to Tel Aviv for a fight to Athens. Any insights bus/train companies for Petra/Amman to Tel Aviv?

Petra Petra-price for car, tourguide
Posted: Sat March 11, 2006 02:03 PM UTC
Hello
I inquired about a tour to Petra and a company called jordan beauty quoted a price for a tour and said he would charge $ 65 for a driver for the day, another $ 75 for a guide and another $ 45 for entrance fees to petra sights. Does this sound like too much? is it customary that tour agents charge for a gude and car( uusually its one price) and are entrance fees really $ 45 in petra? just sounds excessive, but wanted to check
Thanks very much

Petra How to get from Sharm El Sheik to Petra??
Posted: Sat November 5, 2005 08:54 PM UTC
We are travelling to Sharm El Sheik and we want to visit Petra. From Petra we will continue on to Amman to catch our flight.

Questions:
1. How long does it take to get from Sharm to Petra? How do you get there?
2. What is the cost?
3. We see that there is tours from Sharm for 300 euros that take 3 days, one day to get there, one day to visit petra and one day to come back. Does it really take a whole day to get there?

Thanks for your advice!!!!

Petra Travelers needing help!
Posted: Wed October 26, 2005 09:58 PM UTC
My colleague and I are traveling from Cairo to Jordan in November and have some questions. We have 5 days to get from Cairo into Jordan and possibly Jerusalem, and then have to be back in Cairo to fly out on the 5th night. We're on a budget and want to see Amman, Wadi Rum (with possible camping in the desert with Bedouins that we're setting up on our own), and Jerusalem and the Dead Sea if possible. Is this realistic? We realize it will be a race, but we want to hit as much as we can. I need recommendations on whether we should fly from Cairo to Amman and drive south, or whether we should ferry or bus from Cairo to southern Jordan. If there are any recommendations on where to stay (cheap) that is safe for two women (who travel frequently in sub-Saharan Africa and are used to roughing it), that would be great too. Our dates are Nov 20 (leaving Cairo) through November 25 (flying home from Cairo). Thanks!

Petra Should I travel from Petra to Cairo by plane or by ferry and bus/taxi?
Posted: Sat September 24, 2005 07:10 PM UTC
Hi!
My husband and I are planning a trip next year to the Middle East and I would like to fit in Petra and Egypt between our tours of Israel and Turkey. In order to do this I need to get from Petra to Cairo in the least amount of time possible. This is the problem - We will first travel to a hotel near Petra the night before we are to visit it. That gives us only the morning to see Petra (we will go very early) because, due to time constraints, we will have to travel in the afternoon to Cairo so as to be there that same night. This will give us 2 full days in Cairo before we have to fly to Turkey.

Option #1: We somehow get from Petra to Amman (Is there bus service or taxi and if so what is the cost for each and how much time does it take to travel to Amman from Petra?) Then we could catch a plane to Cairo (if the flight schedule works). The flight from Amman takes a little less than an hour.

Option #2: We go to Aqaba by bus or taxi from Petra (Does anyone know the cost of these 2 options and the amount of time this land portion of the trip takes?) Then cross on the ferry which I believe is a several hour trip. Then catch a bus or taxi (Does anyone know the cost of these 2 options) to Cairo. I believe this part of the land transport is a 6 to 8 hour ride.

Option #3: We cross from Petra to Eilat then to Taba (thus avoiding the lengthy and sometimes unreliable sea crossing), then across the Egyptian border and take a bus or taxi to Cairo (Cost and amount of time to do this?)

I would be very grateful for any help you can give me.

Linda
