Barcelona Rail Europe Usage questions
Posted: Mon July 6, 2009 04:10 AM UTC
Hi Guys,

Arriving in barca on Aug21 and by Aug 28 need to visit Cordoba, granada and then to madrid to leave for home, canada.

What is the best way to get to those cities in spain with minimum travel time?

I've looked at rail europe. If i buy a 3day 2month rail pass first class for spain, does this mean I can use it to travel in first class in AVE or regular renfe trains depending on what is available to the destinations.

Majorca Island Car hire for Palma Nova
Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 10:25 PM UTC
We have been looking at car hire for a week as we are travelling from Palma Nova to Cala Millor and wanted a car for the 2nd week of our hoiday on the east coast. The prices on all types of car hire are are pretty steep - has anyone hired cars in resort and has that proved cheaper than over the Internet?

Also, we wanted to eat out at some 'genuine'Spanish restaurants - not just touristy - any recommendations - in palma nove or cala millor?

Barcelona Wine tasting
Posted: Sun July 5, 2009 04:19 AM UTC
Looking for a nice wine tour -- had an excellent trip in Melbourne that took multiple sign ups (instead of a private tour)in one big van to different wineries (had the sweetest, most rib-tickling driver, especially on the trip home! :). Everything I see in Spain seems to center on "private" tours. Any help finding a more "assorted" group (and more reasonably priced) tour? Either Madrid, Sevilla or Barcelona?

Comillas Transportation Santander-Comillas, and Comillas-San Vicente de la Barquera
Posted: Sat July 4, 2009 08:03 PM UTC
I am looking at different options to visit Comillas and have a day trip to San Vicente de la Barquera (if I find accomodations in Comillas that is).

(1) It looks like there's around 50 KM between Santander and Comillas - is it feasible to use a taxi? Any idea what the fare would be?

(2) Once in Comillas, are there taxi's in the town (to go down to San Vicente de la Barquera then return to Santander) ?

(3) Are both Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera walkable once there?

Toledo Afternoon closings?
Posted: Sat July 4, 2009 05:12 PM UTC
Greeting all,

One website I read indicates that many restaurants, shops, and museums (things of interest to tourists) are closed daily between the hours of 14:00 to 16:00. Although I'm aware of siesta (and it seems like a great idea to me!), I have difficulty believing that everything shuts down in the afternoon given the touristic orientation of Toledo. Can someone please illuminate?

Many thanks.

Lleida Lleida - city and train to La Pobla de Segur
Posted: Sat July 4, 2009 03:59 AM UTC
How is the transportation inside Lleida? Is Lleida walkable?

Also, there is a train that goes to La Pobla de Segur, looks like it will take about six hours to do the round trip. Has anyone taken this train to Puebla de Segur? Looks like there's one and a half hours in between the return - any intersting things to do in Pobla de Segur during that time?

Sevilla Best spot to stay?
Posted: Fri July 3, 2009 07:20 PM UTC
I am trying to understand the different quarters, and wondering which section is truly the best to be in (especially for those depending on foot/public transportation)
I have seen what looks like a nice place, closer to the train station (where we will be arriving and departing from) and they advertise within easy distance of the main tourist attractions. Some comments say it is easy walking distance; others complain it's too far. 3 in particular I saw were Pasarela Hotel Sevilla, Sevilla Center, and HOtel Occidental Sevilla, which was quite close to the train station.
Any thoughts on those, or what is the best area to stay? And we are arriving in town around midnight -- will we have any trouble getting transportation?

Aloha,

I'm travelling to Granada for about 3 weeks. I'll stay in Madrid next Saturday and I'd like to get some tips on where to stay (nice hostel would do)and what's a must see/do in one day. (I've read all the replies to Susumarie, so now I also know about the museums, free concerts etc...-thanks for that)

Hopefully on the way back I'll have some more time for Madrid.

Thank you very much for your help in advance!

After seeing other posts here, wondering what is the necessary lead time to arrive at the train station? We will be leaving on the 9 pm AVE out of Atocha, and do want to make the most of that last day -- what is a safe time to be there no later than?

Barcelona Does anyone know why?
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 09:04 PM UTC
Does anyone know why, when entering places such as Palau Guell and La Pedrera, you cannot carry a backpack on your back?
The staff there will tell you to hold your bag by hand or leave it in the cloakroom.

Madrid Where to stay to be close???
Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 09:03 PM UTC
HELP! I am working on a trip to Spain, first stop being Madrid. We are starting at the airport there and will be leaving from the Atocha train station. I am trying to pick an appropriate hotel that will be in a good area, central to main spots to visit and/or bus stops, and closer to the train station, as we will be trying to make the most of our time there, then rushing for the train to leave town in the evening.
I get VERY confused when the hotel descriptions start talking about "north Madrid", "central", etc. Please help direct me to the section (we don't name our cities in sections so much) I want to stay in. In Sevilla, I found maps that showed the things I wanted to hit, plus the train station, so it made it nice trying to land. Can't seem to find such for Madrid!

Posted: Thu July 2, 2009 11:36 AM UTC
We will be visiting Spain at Christmas time. We are flying into Madrid on the 24th December and have to check into our resort in Marbella on the 25th. Should we stay in Madrid or travel down to the coast. Will gas stations be open on the 25th. Any advice would be helpful. I'm thinking to stay in Madrid on the 24 and then drive on the 25th.

Torremolinos The Casa de las Navajas
Posted: Wed July 1, 2009 11:56 PM UTC
I just couldn't believe my eyes when I just read that visits into the Casa de las Navajas were possible every day! I have been going to Torremolinos for the past 15 or 16 years, every year, and this building, which I choose to call ''my pink castle'' has been a fascination of mine ever since I first saw it! But, I have never been able to get concrete informations about it. Nobody ever told me I might have a chance to visit it. For years, I've been told that the town of Torremolinos was looking into buying it and planning to make a sort of museum out of it. But, nothing concrete never came of that! My most impossible dream is to win a big amount at a lottery and then, I would buy this place which so impresses me and then, I would have ''mon château en Espagne'': a French expression meaning ''one's having it's castle in Spain''....Something that is more or less an impossible dream. But isn't that what dreams are made of?

I would be very appreciative of everything more I could find about the Casa de las Navajas: it's story, pictures, what the plans are about it, etc, etc...

Thank you in advance,
Mariette Theriault
