trans mongolian train and mongolia tour questions Posted: Sat October 3, 2009 10:45 PM UTC
hi there,
i am planning to take the train from beijing to irkutsk next year may. It's a bit early but I would like to gather as much infos as possible.
my plan is to take the train from beijing to irkutsk, spend time at lake baikal and then take the train to ulan ude and bus to ulan bataar, spend some time in ulan bataar and finally take the train back to beijing.
does anyone knows what is the train schedule, the train fare, departs on which day and the cheapest train to take? prefer the 2nd class.
is it cheaper to take the train from beijing to ulan bataar, and then ulan bataar to irkutsk or just a direct train from beijing to irkutsk?
it would be good if you can provide me with the train schedule and fare, so i can plan my trip better.
If i have 6 days in mongolia, where do you suggest me for day trips?
many thanks for your help!!

Hello all,
I am in the enviable position of being able to go to Mongolia and China - all expenses paid ;-).This is therefore being organised by somebody else. We are travelling in November and staying in a yurt, i understand its going to be soooo cold, any advice or tips for surviving the cold at this time.
What are the temps, hours of sunshine, will there be snow?
Thanks

Western Mongolia Travel itinerary Suggestions Posted: Tue September 8, 2009 01:11 AM UTC
I already have a jeep arranged and I have 7 days in Western Mongolia. I want to visit nomads (eagle hunters, mongolian) and experience natural scenery.
We fly from UB to Khovd on September 26th in the morning and we depart October 2nd from Ulgii to UB.
We will visit the eagle hunter competion on october 1st in Ulgii.
Now Madcat I have read your recommendation for visiting Altai Tavan Bogd. What rough itinerary would you recommend for visiting this place beginning on Khovd and leaving from Ulgii?
My proposed itinerary thus far is as follows: We are trying to limit our driving to 100km's per day but we can go over if necessary.
Day 1) Friday 9/25/09:
-Arrive: 09:50 (ULN)
-Airport pick-up $22 by Nassan Guest House
(Is this too expensive?)
-Day trip to Terelj National Park, a beautiful forested area near Ulaanbaatar. Optional hiking and horse riding. Return to UB for dinner and an overnight stay in the hotel.
-Overnight Ulaan baatar (Nassan Guest House single room 21$/night)
Day 2) Saturday 9/26/09:
-Depart to Khovd
-Drive about five hours to the Namarjin Valley in the Altai Mountains. You will be rewarded with the view of this vast wide-open valley filled with grazing herds of goat, sheep, and yaks, and spotted with many gers. Towering over the valley is the impressive snow-capped peak of Tsambagarav
Mountain. Because our horsemen’s families live here you will have a unique opportunity to experience the nomadic way of life. We will stay in our tents or with the nomads in their ghers.
Day 3) Sunday 9/27/09
Tsambagarav Mt area to do some hiking
-Camp in Gher with nomads
Day 4) Monday 9/28/09
Travel to lake Tolbo
(If this is not feasible can you recommend another place we can go from here to visit Kazakh eagle hunter nomads in their ghers and camp with them? We would prefer a remote area)
Day 5) Tuesday 9/29/09
Camp among Kazakh families, of which many are eagle hunters.
Day 6) Wednesday 9/30/09
Sagsai Soum where many Kazakh families stay in autumn.
Day 7) Thursday 10/1/09
Shar Nuur ger camp, 25 km from Ulgii, eagle hunter competition
Day 8) Friday 10/2/09
drive to ulgii
Day 9) Saturday 10/3/09
fly to UB from ulgii
Visit Gandan Monastery
-Nassan Guesthouse $21/night single room
Day 10) Sunday 10/4/09
-Depart 1030am from UB
We will have our own food and cooking stove.
Thanks for your help,
Matt

Where could I find timetables for trains between Beijing and Ulaan Baator? Posted: Fri September 4, 2009 09:24 AM UTC
I have tried to find recent and accurate information about Beijing-Ulaan Baator-trains in the net, but haven't succeedeed so far. I have the Lonely Planet Guide (actually two, with differing timetables), but because the schedules change, I can not count on them.
I am trying to find the first train from Beijing to UB after 13th of September, and the last one back before 30th of September (those are the dates of my flights to Beijing).
If somebody could help me with this, I'd be very thankful indeed. Somebody said, that September isn't the high season anymore, so we shouldn't have troubles with getting a ticket?

Mongolian visa application query Posted: Wed July 29, 2009 02:18 PM UTC
Hi there,
I am a uk resident currently filling in the online visa application for a mongolian entry/exit tourist visa (up to 30 days). The form asks the following questions and number 42 is confusing me. I cant seem to contact anyone to gain clarification.
40. visa category: i selected 'for tourists' from a list.
41. visa duration: I selected 'Visitor (upto 30 days)'
42. visa entries: this is the question confusing me: the options that could possibly be correct are either: 'To leave country' or 'to visit up to 90 days'.
As I am only applying for a tourist 30 day visa, i thought about selecting to visit up to 90 days but i will also be leaving mongolia within 30 days and know that i am suppored to gain an entry and exit visa so should i be selecting 'to leave country'. I guess my problem is that i dont understand the question.
Any ideas????
Thanks x

Spending Summer at Hovsgol Nuur Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 05:58 AM UTC
I'm coming to Hovsgol Nuur for the summer to escape the heat of China and get back to nature. I chose Mongolia because I've studied throatsinging and would like to sing with the experts. I've also wanted to go on a vision quest in the Altai for a long time, so am also interested in an excursion into the mountains further west of the lake. Do you have any advice for me?
Can anyone recommend a good place to stay at Hovsgol Nuur that is not too expensive? My main interest is in having a place to shower and eat. I am also bringing a tent with me.
As I don't have much money (I know that's hard to believe because I'm an American, but it's true) and I'm working my way around the world as an English teacher, I'm interested in finding students. Please contact me if you are from Mongolia and want to practice your English. I am willing to negotiate, part cash, part barter.
I have lots of questions. I'll be arriving in Ulaan Baatar next Wednesday, July 1st at 13:20 p.m. and taking a bus to Moron and from there another bus to Hovsgol Nuur. However, if I find a group to share expenses with, I may join other people. If you know of people who might need another person for their group and they are heading for Hovsgol Nuur then, please send me an e-mail.
My plan is to camp for a few weeks and then return to teach in Ulaan Baatar to save enough money for the next leg of my trip. Please contact me if you can give me any information about good places to teach.
I follow the shaman's path and am interested in meeting other shamans.

Ger-to-Ger tour company Posted: Mon June 22, 2009 10:02 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be in Mongolia in July of this year and, while I do not plan to arrange an itinerary as such until I get there, I have been perusing some of the options advertised on the internet. One interesting one that I came across was a sustainable tourism, 'community-based' organization called Ger to Ger (www.gertoger.org)
Does anyone have any experience of using this company, if so I would appreciate any feedback that you may have regarding their services.
Also, if you happen to know of any other similar organizations on the ground (bearing in mind I'm an underfunded traveler) I would love to hear about them.
regards,
XB

Trans-Mongolian Train - $200 USD one-way ticket? Posted: Mon June 15, 2009 05:42 AM UTC
I'd like to make a roundtrip from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar sometime between July 5 - July 20 on the Trans-Mongolian train. Through the CITS office, I was quoted $200 USD for a hardsleeper one-way ticket, which seems rather steep? I've read elsewhere (i.e., Lonely Planet) that it's about $100 USD. Have prices gone up?

Getting a tour when in mongolia? Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 09:06 AM UTC
I'm arriving in U-B early September and I'm looking to book a 7-10day tour when I get there. Does anyone know if this is possible or do I need to sort it out before I go?
If you have done this I'd love to hear from you, how did you sort it? Are there agencies in U-B where you can just roll up and book?
Finally, any ideas on rough price of a 7 day tour?
Cheers!

Hi!
I plan to travel to Mongolia soon.
I've searched for accomodations, I found nothing. I would like to visit Ulan Bator and Kharakhorum. Kindly suggest.
Which is the best way to travel from Ulan Bator to Kharakhorum, train/ bus? Are there any daily departures? How long is the journey? How much?
I searched for the train timetable for Beijing-Ulan Bator and Ulan Bator-Beijing it seems likely, they didn't update the train info.Does anyone has the latest train timetable info?
Thanks

Ger-to-Ger trips Posted: Sun March 22, 2009 05:17 AM UTC
I am wondering what are some of the best areas of Mongolia for ger-to-ger trips. I am interested in areas where there is beautiful scenery, open spaces, and good hiking.
Also, can anyone tell me what travel agencies in Ulan Baatar charge for these ger-to-ger trips ? (a range - I realize they must vary somewhat).
