Johor Bahru Posted: Tue February 14, 2012 10:58 PM UTC
I was in Johor Bahru in march 2010 but can't remember which shopping mall
we went to. Which is the biggest and newest now...is it KSL city mall,
Tebrau shopping mall or the Johor Duty Free Zone? I think the one we
went to last had a fountain at the entrance? Just looking for a mall
with a good variety of shops that are not too pricey. Thanks.

Hi,

We need to know of places where we can change foreign currency to MYR in KL, is airport the best place ? or individual currency exchangers?

Also I have heard that USD fetches better rates than INR in case of money changers, is it true?

Pulau Redang Posted: Mon February 13, 2012 10:50 AM UTC
Hi,

My wife and I are planning to travel to Pulau Redang in the 2nd week of March as we are keen to avail the early bird snorkeling package. We are from India.

I have some queries regarding this: -

1. The dates seem to coincide with school holidays - is there a rush usually at that time?
2. All the packages require previous online booking - through credit card or bank transfer. Is there any reason for fraud and other apprehension? Any previous instances and what steps we need to safe guard against it. What if the resort simply refuse to acknowledge our payment
3. Which beach is best to stay considering we have a budget of around 500 MYR per person for the package

I think the queries are basic but would be of great help if anyone can answer quickly

Pulau Tioman Posted: Thu February 9, 2012 09:36 PM UTC
I am considering going to Pulau Tioman for the first time. First time to Malaysia alltogether.

I am thinking about staying at Berjaya Tioman Resort, which supposedly should have decent snorkeling right off the beach. Is this true?

If it is, how are the waters there generally? I am not really a strong swimmer.

If there are better places on the island to snorkel off - which has calm waters - I'd appreciate if anyone would mention them :-)

Thanks in advance

Malaysia Posted: Mon February 6, 2012 04:59 PM UTC
Hello, I am traveling to Malaysia for the first time, at the end February beginning of March, this is my first trip there and I have a few questions about Malaysia.

1. Is it safe to travel there as a single African American woman?
2. What location in Malaysia would you recommend to stay?
3. What hotel would you recommend that are clean, safe, reputable and not so expensive?
4. Where or what foods do you recommend?
5. Is safe to go to any night clubs or bars for cocktails?
6. Is it safe to video or take picture in public?
7. How do I go about booking taxi for pick up from train station?
8. What are some must see places to visit while in Malaysia?
9. Where should you change over your money and are there ATM's accessible. I understand the ATM's system in Malaysia use a 6 digits pin, so how do I go about using them since we in US use a 4 digit pin system to withdraw money?
10. Can you hire a tour guide?
11. How is the weather around this time of year and is this a good time to travel to Malaysia?

Hi,

I'd like to visit Kota Kinabalu and apparently it's generally overcrowded. But I don't really know how to get the climbing licence to go in the park.

Should I do book online or can I book on stay in KK 2-3 days before visiting Mount Kinabalu? How to get the climbing licence?

Can I arrive to Laban Rata and get a bed like that without any kind of booking?

Please explain me your own journey :)

Thank you

Hi,

We'd like to climb the Mount Kinabalu from the city of KK, but I read a lot of comments and blogs and I'm a lil bit reluctant cause Mount Kinabalu appears like a real attraction and not like a nature reserve. Moreover someones said the climbing can be consider as strolling more than hiking.

But I'm unquiet because I don't want to have a guide following us 1m behind, like if he was a shepherd dog keeping an eye on us everytime. So can we strolling a lil bit as we want or the guide does not let us "free" (by "free" I meant "not followed by a guy saying "don't go too far!" every 10 sec" ^^)?

And I heard about the fact we will be 140 people/day. Are groups really dense or are they scarce? Cause I can't imagine see birds or any others animals with 140 people around me.

PS: I didn't want to seem haughty, but I just want to get an amazing nature experience climbing MK.

Thank you

Malaysia Posted: Tue January 31, 2012 08:25 PM UTC
Hi,

I'd like to visit KK and Eastern Malaysia in early march and obviously after climbing the Mount Kinabalu I'd like to relax.

I'll be with my parents and we want to go to the magnificient beaches around KK. But we visited Malaysia (peninsular) and - I don't want to have prejudices - malaysian people due to the fact they are muslim was more solemn compared to thai/cambodian people. And several times men generally didn't really like to see a woman in bathsuit (my mother actually).

So can we really relax Eastern Malaysia, go to the beach, like we can do in Thailand for example?

Thank you

Hi arriving KL LCCT at 1330hrs by air asia. I know busses can take you to gentings but the time table says depart KL LCCT @ 1530 arrive genting 1600Hrs for RM35.00 per pax so thats a two hour lay over at LCCT.

I was thinking of getting the bus to Sentral then another to genting better time tables from Sentral. Does the bus take you to the resorts?? we are staying at the first world resort and how do we get there if the bus does not go to the resorts. It seems the busses stop at the lower genting?? am I correct. we will have suitcases X2 and hand luggage.

Thanks

Pulau Langkawi Posted: Sat January 28, 2012 02:38 PM UTC
Hi, we will be in Langkawi at the begining of April 2012 for the final lap of our tour of s.e asia.
We have alreday bookd flights to Langkawi and will be staying for 6 nights.
Which is the best area to stay.
We want to be close to the beaches (does Kuah have any access to beaches) and want to enjoy plenty of life at night itme, ie bars and restaurants but not necessary clubs.
We are undecided between Kuah and Pentai Cenang.
Any recomendations for mid range hotels.
we are really open to any suggestions of alternative areas in Langkawi.
Many thanks

My family is coming, my dad and mom, 68 and 65 years old respectively. My sister and his boyfriend and my nieces, two 12 years old girls.

Where do you recommend, we go to on a DAY TRIP?. Bearing in mind that my parents will appreciate history and culture more but can be easily tired. Also a consideration is the budget..

Please recommend your top two.. we have an extra day and if my parents are upto it then we're goin gto have another out of KL trip. :)

Hello VTers!!

So if I were going solo or with a buddy I know that Hoponhopoff is cheaper than taxi.

But as we are a group of 7, @ 38RMx5 (adult) and 17RMx2 (child, that would mean RM224 total.

I looked at the map: http://www.myhoponhopoff.com/images/mapbig.png and I found out that the places of our interests is grouped into two sections mostly, stops 12 to 16 and stops 20 to 22.

Now I am not sure but, I think stops 12 (National Museum) to 16 (Dataran Merdaka) are actually near each other and can take by walking.

And then we can ride train from Masjid Jamek LRT station to Titiwangsa Station to go to Stop 20 (Palace of culture and walk through Titiwangsa Lake and National Art Gallery, and further on to Kampung Baru.

Then take taxi to go to Petronas Tower as our last stop.

Is this doable?? We actually have two days so we can split the tour to have more time and make it more relaxing.

What do you think guys?

Where is the best place to visit in Malaysia in March, for out of this world snorkelling, great food, also maybe to see the orangutans? I know desintations are affected by monsoon seasons etc. Tavelling with two kids, 7 and 10. Not too expensive (don't need fancy resorts, but definitely something clean and comfortable with air con etc). Thanks, Kelly

Chinese New Year Greeting, and Best Wishes to all VT friends for a great Dragon Year.
I have a few extra days to spend in the Chinese New Year holiday, thinking to goto Haadyai, Thailand.
Last time, we used to drive to Changlun and book the tour and hotel thru the tour agents. Due to peak CNY season, I think I better call the agents first but unfortunately I lost all the contacts. VT friends, please help.
CNY regards from,
