Slow boat from Luang Prabang to Houi Xai Posted: Sat November 7, 2009 09:24 PM UTC
There seem to be two options one nearly three times as much as the other. Has anyone used either and can give some feedback please.
Both seem to offer the same trip, overnight in the same place, Pak Bang / Pakbeng.
1 - Luang Say - Mekong River Cruise, Euro 283
2 - The Nagi of Mekong, THB.4,600 about Euro 93
To me it seems a no brainer on price but am I missing something?
Thanks

Nice place to stay during Xmas in Luang Prabang? Posted: Mon November 2, 2009 12:41 AM UTC
Hello! We are staying 4 nights during Xmas in LP, and much to our surprise have been finding everything, except really pricey places, booked! Out of desperation, I finally snagged the last room at Riverside Guest house for $66USD, but it seems overpriced to us, for what they offer! Anyone know anything about that place? Or have any ideas on another place to stay in case I can cancel this reservation? Thanks for any help! Should have planned earlier I guess!

Nong Khiaw near Luang Prabang Posted: Sun August 16, 2009 05:44 PM UTC
Hope you can help
I'm wondering if anyone has stayed at Sunset Guesthouse in Nong Khiaw recently – and if so, how was it? It's just that I seem to get the exact same review, no matter how I search the net.
How's the accomodation, the food, the sanitary conditions, does the internetconnection run smoothly etc. any comments are most welcome.
Thank you

If I were to travel to Laos with a very limited time to spare, where should i go? Luang Prabang or Vientiane? considering that i will have only 3 days to spare for Laos.
I had been working on Vientiane all the while but now someone from VT has strongly suggested Luang Prabang ("unesco site", and it would be ver interesting),now i am in two minds.
thnx in advance

Hi everyone,
Is getting a visa at Luang Prabang airport easy? Or is it easier to get one in the U.S. before going?

questions Posted: Fri July 18, 2008 12:29 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
I have a few questions since I have never been to Laos.
How does one get from Luang Prabang airport to the hotels in town. Is there an airport shuttle service?
As for money, are credit cards widedly accepted? If not, are ATM machines available? Or is using U.S. dollars easier?

tour vs self guided for one day to National Museum and Central Market Posted: Mon June 23, 2008 12:07 PM UTC
one tour op has gotten back to me and can do the tour I'd like for the $ I'd like to spend. The only bug is I'd like to make Elephant Park on the 4th day and depart of the 5th day. They only want to book a 4 day tour in their tour order.
If I leave them on the 3rd day, went to EP on the 4th day, how would I fare either self guided or finding a local for the 5th day and cover the National Museum and Central Market?

Kuangsi waterfall and PakOu Cave in 1 day Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 06:07 PM UTC
Hello, I will arrive at Luang Prabang in a afternoon at about 4pm from Van Vieng. and I will be leaving for Phonsavan on the 3 rd day.
when i arrived at Luang Prabang, i most probably wil hang out at the town and rest in guesthouse. So i will have one whole day to visit around only.
Do you think i can visit kuangsi and pakou in one day? Other than Kuangsi and pakou, any place else worth a visit in my tight schedule? thanks.

Any buses from Luang Prabang to Thai border? Posted: Fri February 1, 2008 09:38 AM UTC
I am currently in Vietnam and thinking of going to Laos for a week or 10 days but I am not sure if I need that much time. I would have to cross into Loas from near Hue. The plan would be to go from Dong Ha to Savannakhet, then on to Vientiane and then to Luang Prabang.
I am hoping that I can cross into Thailand from Luang Prabang by bus but cannot find any info for that. I am not too keen on taking the slow boat for 2 days and I would prefer not to have to go back to Vientiane either. I have been told by tour operators in Vietnam that there is bus service available from LP to the Thai border but I don't know if I can rely on that.
Any info would be appreciated.

Swimming Posted: Tue January 29, 2008 05:58 AM UTC
many postings and website about Luang Prabang suggest visiting waterfalls and going for a swim or going in the water on the back of an elephant!. Is this safe? Our travel doc warned of yucky parasites in Mekong River and waterways that feed into it. Anyone know anything about this?
Thanks

Bangkok to Luang Prabang Posted: Tue November 27, 2007 04:02 AM UTC
Hi there - Thank You for reading this posting. I'd like to know if there is a train journey from Bangkok to Chiang Khong (small Thai town bordering Huay Xai (Laos). If yes, can you book in advance before your trip? If not, then what is your recommendation? I plan to only stay in Luang Prabang and hope to include the two-day journey by slow-boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang.
Your kind feedback is appreciated.

Off the beaten track in LP Posted: Thu September 27, 2007 02:39 PM UTC
Hi,
I will be in LP next week and will be using it as a base for the next 5 days. Am planning to visit Pak On cave and probably a short tour around the city. Is there any other places that I can visit that is "off the beaten track" for overnight i.e. small villages, homestay etc around LP? If yes, how can I arrange it.
Many thanks.

The North Posted: Tue September 11, 2007 12:49 PM UTC
Hi,
I am planning to visit Laos in November. Just a couple of quick questions which I would be very grateful for if answered:
1. I plan to visit Muang Sing after crossing the Thai-Laos border at Chiang Khong. What is the best way to get to Muang Sing from the border (cost/duration)? I hear that a Mekong river trip is a possibility in these parts.
2. From Muang Sing/Luang Nam Tha what is the best way to get to Luang Prabang (cost/duration)? Is there an overnight bus or even flight options?
I appreciate any help provided. Many Thanks.

Malaria-Prophylaxis in LP Posted: Sun July 8, 2007 10:23 AM UTC
Hi,
In a few weeks I will travel for 5 days to Luang Prabang (by air from BKK)- in CDC-recommendations malaria-prophylaxis wit malarone is necessary for all parts of Laos - except Vientiane. Does anybody know if this is really necessary in LP or is exposition-prophylaxis with deet etc. enough?
There are other risks in LP? (criminality, aggressive begging youth and children?)
Thanks paediat
