Can I buy a SIM card? Posted: Wed October 31, 2007 01:49 AM UTC
Can I buy a SIM card at the Santo Domingo airport when I arrive, for use in a GSM cellphone while I'm in the D.R.? If yes, how much is the cost and where can I buy the card?
Thank you very much.

Trip to Santo Domingo Posted: Mon October 1, 2007 06:43 AM UTC
We lived in Santo Domingo from 1964 to 1968 and are going back to visit.
We will be going to a resort at Boca Chica and plan to rent a car.
Is it best to take cash or traveler's checks? Are U.S. credit cards accepted in most places? Is the water safe to drink?
Any advice on do and don't would be appreciated.

What will I need... Posted: Tue August 7, 2007 03:31 AM UTC
other than what's in my luggage and my passport.
Do I need vaccinations?
Should I treat this like a trip to Mexico: avoid the water, stay in the populated areas, etc.?
By the way, I'm going to Santo Domingo for a long weekend. We're staying at the Hilton. Anything I should know about the hotel/area.
Thanks so much. Any insight is of great help!

Language School: Where to study-Zona Universitaria or Zona Colonia? Posted: Sun July 22, 2007 07:28 PM UTC
Hi All!
I am going to be studying Spanish during the fall semester in Santo Domingo. I need to choose between two different language schools which are located in different parts of the city. The first is located in the Zona Universitaria (Instituto Intercultural del Caribe) and the other is located in the Zona Colonial (Hispaniola Language School). Can anyone provide a little information about these two different parts of the city? It would be helpful in my decision-making process. I am a female, have never traveled to the DR before, and consider safety to be very a important concern for me. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thx!

old aircraft at Las Americas airport stored DC 6 and Constellation Posted: Thu March 29, 2007 02:36 AM UTC
Hi
I am visiting Las Americas again 4/21 and wondered if there is anyone who knows whom I need to contact in advance to get permission to see all those old classic propellor planes that are stored in the airport compound- they are hidden from view but you can see about 10 of them upon arrival and then they are gone behind trees.
Many thanks
Mike

Forgot name of excellent small hostel/hotel in Santo Domingo Posted: Sun November 5, 2006 06:51 AM UTC
Hello Experts!
I was in SD 6 years ago, and I stayed in a romantic small hotel, an ancient monastery close to the center of Santo Domingo. It has a patio with rooms around it. It was lovely! I would love to go there again, but I forgot the name of the place - any suggestions???
Many thanks for your advice

COMBI OR GUAGUA TO SANTO DOMIGO Posted: Thu August 10, 2006 01:10 AM UTC
I heard there's a problem getting public buses at Santo Domingo airport.
Can anyone tell how far it is from the arrivals building to the autopista to catch a guagua instead of an expensive taxi? Is it an easy walk or will the authorities check me out if I walk it?
I feel it outrageous to be held hostage like that by the taxi union. I would sooner walk it!
thanks Mike

Electric outlets Posted: Thu June 22, 2006 12:30 AM UTC
I know the current is 110 for dual prongs as in the US, but are these uneven in size as in the US -- one wider than the other? I am planning on taking an adapter for my 3-prong laptop plug, but do not know if it'll fit. Are 3-prong outlets found there at all? Thanks for your help!

Trying to sort out must do things Posted: Tue June 20, 2006 12:50 AM UTC
I am trying to find a tour operator that deals with more extreme "roughing" it type tours into the mountain region, preferably to see waterfalls and mountains, maybe do some "gliding", (that thing were you slide across a rope from one end to another) see flora and fauna, as well as the cigar factories. I am having a dfficult time finding tours that come into or ride out from juan dolio as I am at an AI resort. My intention is to Wed chill at AI as ourfligt arrives at 1 and I am told that customes can take some time, Thursday do Boca Chica as I have been told over and over to not go on a weekend, Friday first trek into santo domingo (lighthouse, aquarium, los tres ojos, that cave restuarant), Saturday do a complete full day tour(fingers crossed) and dancing in santo domingo, Sunday tour into santo domingo old city (conde, la zona, mercado, and museo hombre dominicano), Monday chill at AI b4 afternoon flight. What sucks is I only have four full days to get this in....any suggestions on a good tour company that comes to this area yet goes to the places I mentioned above which are more east coast than southern in the same day/tour? I don't want to waste too much time taking a bus to punta/bavaro if I can find it closer. Help!, as I leave in a day and a half!!!! i really wanna do that gliding things as I have a fear of heights I am trying to overcome...

Camera/Camcorder security Posted: Mon June 19, 2006 01:39 AM UTC
How much should I be concerned about security from thieves in Santo Domingo -- especially in the Zona Colonial? I'm an experienced traveler in Latin America, but this is my first trip to DR. I'm always careful about keeping the straps wrapped around my wrist and other common sense measures, but just don't know what to expect there and don't want to lose anything. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Looking for CHEAP but CLEAN accomodations Posted: Sat May 13, 2006 05:55 PM UTC
Hello, I'm new to VT. I am taking a trip to Santo Domingo in July to visit my girlfriend for two weeks. I need a cheap place to stay, but also one that is clean and comfortable. The maximum I can afford is about $30 US per night for 15 nights. I would also like some advice on what to bring for basic expenses for two weeks (meals, entertainment, and misc. spending). I am not a big spender and can get by with very basic things. Hoping some of you can help me out. I look forward to your posted replies.
